HON F E HERRING OF ELK CITY FOR GOVERNOR
The candidacy of Hon F E
Herring of Elk City for Govern-
or of the state of Oklahoma is
steadily gaining favor in the eyes
of the Democrats all over the
state Each mail brings letters
from scores of business men
farmers and laboring men offer-
ing their assistance and co-opera
tion and pledging him their sup
port This must be gratifying
to Mr Herring and his ardent
adherents at home It shows
plainly that Democrats of the
state have made and are now
making a personal investigation
for themselves as to the fitness
and qualities of a man to be their
governor This is what every
voter in this land should do
Every citizen owes it to himself
and it is a duty which be owes to
his state to inform himself as to
the mental and moral worth of
each candidate for ofilce and
from among them choose the one
he believes to be most worthy
Too long have politicians been
advertised by political factions
and by this means received favor
at the polls while in fact the
voter scarcely gave thought to
the merits or demerits of any
candidate But we predict that
the coming campaign will be a
new era in the casting of the bal
lot The voters are wanting to
know all about the men who are
running for governor
Mr Herring is not a politican'
and if we believed thathis election
depended upon a " resort to the
tricks and cunning of a profes
sional politician or the advertise
mentof a political faction we
would despair of his ever re
ceiving the honor Such methods
were ever inconsistent with
that high degree of citizenship
and manhood which his past life
reflects but if the people of the
state will diligently inquire and
learn to know the man as we
who have watched his every act
and move for years in the end
their verdict at the polls will be
the same as the people of western
Oklahoma is today that Mr
Herring as governor is the right
man for the place
Mr Herring has been very in-
strumental in the upbuilding of
western Oklahom Has at all
times been a doer instead of
suggeBter mastered ail business
propositions that have come be-
fore him even to the breaking
of the panic of 1907 within three
hours time in our city by going
on the street and buying the
cotton from the farmers of our
country upon his own account
and handled during the panic
4000 bales of cotton without the
assistance of the banka This
and many other deeds of this
kind have caused the business
and agricultural interests of this
part of the state to appreolato
him as a' business man and a
man that at all times practiced
economy
And where is the man who
doubts the esteem that the peo
pie of western Oklahoma bear
Mr Herring?- Where is the man
who doubts that the "short graas
oountry wilt honor him with a
solid vote? Scarcely had It been
rumored that Mr Herring waa
considering the wishes of hli
friends to become a candidate
for governor when villages
towns cities and oountlef In our
glorious west began to via with
each other for the honor of being
the first to endorse him One
could not read the resolutions of
tribute and endorsement paid
him in a mass meeting of the
citizens of Roger Mills county
where he had made his home so
long without feeling (hat the
citizens of that county were
tendering him the respect and
confidence of a sincere people
merited by long association ex
perience and dealings with him
The people of Elk City have
spoken of him in public mass
meetings in terms of undoubted
trust Likewise have citizens
assembled in Texoia Erick Foss
and in smaller precincts and
villages to speak their praise of
this man’s worth to the people
of Oklahoma at large Simul-
taneously with this outburst of
enthusiasm and even before Mr
Herring has made a formal an
nouncement the Democratic
Central committee of Beckham
county by unanimous resolution
signed by each member of the
committee have asked the state
to support him and have com
mended him to the Democracy
of the state "as an honorable
man a good citizen a loyal Dem-
ocrat whose views upon public
questions are in accordance with
the principles of the Democratic
party and consistent with the
greatest welfare of the state and
its citizenship” '
The people of western Okla
horn can well be proud of their
candidate fur governor
' In his early manhood he came
to us as a cowboy and spread his
blanket upon our prairies When
the cattle days passed away he
remalnded to be among us and
to plow the prairies and con-
structs farm Then came the rail-
roads and with them great hordes
of people who settled thick the
country and builded themselves
homes and cities- To this pro
gress Mi Herring adapted him
self and centered his attention
on growing towns and engaged
in honorable struggle in the
commercial world Then came
statehood and at its birth he
played no inconspicuous part in
the making of our constitution
as the delegate of the people of
the west and in this he served
them faithfully Through it all
and above it ail he has made good
and drawn closer to him the
people who now would honor
him greater than any
The verdict of our country is
that Mr Herring is clean honest
and capable a man to bo trusted
And we know that should he be
chosen as governor that his ad-
ministration will be business like
and just and at all times in that
high office he will be clean hon-
est and capable and after bis
term of office expires when he is
given back to us a private citizen
he Will come back clean honest
and capable— still a man to be
trusted
May he continue to grow as
the favorite of the voters of Okla-
homa— Beckham County News
