Commits Suicide.
Jm. D. Cart committed suicide at
Fred Harrison's livery barn Saturday
tnora' by taking a doae of twenty - four
grains of arsenic.
Early that morning he went into Self'i
blacksmith shop and asksd for some
water, and beiug direoted to the water
bucket, be opened a box and placing the
contents in his mouth, took a cup of
water to wash it down. Mr. Self re-
marked to bim that be wm taking qui-
nine early in the morning and he replied
curtly that it was not quinine. Mr.
Self thought no more of It uuUl a short
time afterwards wheu one of the force
at the livery barn came in and told Mr.
Self that Cart was acting very queer
and believed he had taten poslon. Self
then related bis taking some medicine
there ashort tim: before. A physician
was sent for at once lint no relief could
be afforded him and he died in great
agony a short time afterwards. The
remains ware taken charge of by the
city authorities and buried. Cart had
been living at Sapulpa while his wife
resides u*ar here and some pretty harsh
correspondence had been carried on be
tween them and it is ssid that in one of
his letters he theateued to return here
and kill her, and when he returned last
w«ek, it was feared on her part and of
her friends that be would carry out his
threat.
That Hay Royalty.
The hay royalty case has been
■■orbing feature before the Vinita court
this week.
F. M. Smith, a lawyer of Vinita, has
been engaged in the hay business and
refused to pay the royalty claimed by
the Interior department on the same.
Recently a car load of hay was seized
by the revenue collector and it was of
fered for Mle, but no bids could be got
pn it Failing in collecting in this man
ner an oriler was secured from Indian
Agent J. B Shoenfelt orderlug Smith's
removal from the Territory, which
wa* accordingly done, he and S|rs Smith
being taken to Oswego Kansas, by the
Indian police.
Smith returned Saturday and Dis-
trict Attorney Soi er applied to Judge
Springer for a bench warrant for Smith'*
arrest under section 3148 R. 8. U 8.
which reads as follows. "If any person
who has been removed from the Indian
country shall thereafter at any time re
turn or be fonud within the Indian conn
try, be shall be liable to a penalty of
I100U." The request was granted and
Smith brought into court. A demurrer
was entered by Smith's Attorneys,
claiming that it should be prosecuted
civilly and not criminally.
A (tier argument Judge Springer rul
ed that action could be brought by In -
dictment. presentment or civilly, hence
the criminal proceedings were proper.
It was agreed on both sides that trial

' The Commissioner of lodiau Affair*

The new townsite that I read about
in the different papers. I wish to state
for the benefit of tboae not acquainted
with the situation, that Jack Raymond
has a house on It and Hvm where
talk of the new townaite and aays he
intends to allot the land and anyone
intruding on it will aecare a taw salt,
and warns all to keep off of his land.
A word of advice. The depot will be m
near as we qeed it. Now let as all pall
together brethern. We are all here for
the lame purpose, then llye aod lot live.
The best way to build up a thriviog
town is for each and every man to pall
together and not try to ront and tear
down All resident* of this town ara
partners, not opponent*. In all likeli
hood tbe more buslneis done by yonr
rival, the more yon will do. Every
merchant who treats his coatomer houj
estly and fairly will get bia share, and
the tuore business that can be secured
by united efforts, the better it will be
for all. When a town ceases to grow,
it commences to die and the people try
to hill each other off in their business
and good name, the more rapidly will
utter ruin come to all. Stand together
for the Advancement of every citison,
snd if a man shows ability to prosper,
do not pull bim back with jealousy or
weight bim down with cold indifference.

A Stockman'* Vlaw. ~
I nut frequently asked • ■ What kind of
country is the iudlan Territory?'' My
answer is It reminds me of a great bank
vault when the cashier closes his door at
the end of day. be sets his time lock so
to open at 9 o'clock next morning,
■ nor any one else can open it before
that time, but when ths clock points at
t> o click next morning the cashier turns
ths bolts and swings open the great steel
doors and exposes to view the vast treas
ures stored therein. Jnst so with the
Indian Territory. Wheu tbe Great Rnl
er m*de the earth and fulness
thereof He put a time-lock on that
part of it and it has remained closed un-
til the present time. I am of tbe opinion
that the hour hand has almost reached 8
a to. and when that time comes tbe
geologist will step in and ojien up to the
world one of the greatest mineral pro-
ductions yet discovered by man. coal,
lead. line, gas. oil and probably Iron will
be fonnd in abundance. There is coal
enough in the Cherokee Nation alone to
iMt the United States 100 years. This Is
no idle dream and time will verify thi*
statement.
