Just A Moment
In closing our thoughts last
week on the subject "Do we love
the Lord" we noticed the case of
the young rich man recorded In
Matthew the 19th chapter Let
us now notice another case along
the same thought Judas Iscariot
pretended to love the Lord but
was not willing to obey Him Re-
member when the Lord selected
the twelve apostles he command-
ed them to forsake all things and
follow Him Judas Iscariot prov-
ed beyond a question of a doubt
that he did not love the Lord
He failed to keep his commands
As we advance further In this
lesson let us make a personal ex-
amination to see If we love the
Lord First let us consult the
law or commandments of our Lord
concerning what a person must do
in order to become a child of God
John says in chapter 5 verses 24
and 25 "Verily verily I say unto
you he that heareth my WORD
and bclieveth on him that sent me
hath everlasting life And shall
not come into condemnation but
is passed from death unto life
Veriliy verily I say unto you the
hour is coming and now is when
the dead shall hear the voice of
the Son of 'God: And they that
hear shall live’’ Again we hear

John say "He that has an ear let
him hear" Rev 2:7 From these
verses we lesrn thst we must hear
Christ or the Son of God In
Matthew the Lord said that all
who would do the will of the Fath-
er would be saved And In Mat-
thew the 17th chapter we learn
that It is the will of the Father
for us to HEAR HIS SON There-
fore we understand that the first
thing one must do to become a
child of God is TO HEAR HIS
WORD We plead with all
men to do this because we could
never believe In the Son of God
without first hearing of him
All I believe will agree that In
becoming a child of God one must
believe because Jesus said "Ex-
cept ye believe that I am he ye
shall die in your sins” John 8:24
Paul said "But without FAITH
(or belief) It is impossible to
please Him (or God) for he that
cometh to God MUST BELIEVE
that He is and that he Is a re-
warder of those who diligently
seek Him” Hebrews 11:6 Paid
said that faith comes by hearing
and hearing by the WORD OF
GOD Romans 10:17 Now we
have two things that one must do
to become a child of God Is this
all that is commanded of one to
become a child of God? Someone
may be ready to say yes this is

The Spinning Wheel
By Olivo Barr
Social and Civic organizations
including General Federation of
Woman’s Clubs have established
Gerontology Divisions to promote
the success and happiness of the
aged and to help them fulfill their
respective missions in life
Sometimes well meant but dis
turblng philosophy concerning
loneliness is leveled at the aged
Factutally loneliness disillusion-
ment and pain are not respecters
of age And most pathetic of all
loneliness is the loneliness of
youth
It was my privilege recently to
discuss the subject of Gerontology
with some wonderful Christian pi-
oneer mothers residing here
Their preferences and ideas while
not expressed In the same words
were almost identical With the
hearts definitely set on spiritual
things these cheerful women
were willing and abundanly able
to share a wealth of spiritual ex-
periences To quote: "HeaveB
seems nearer than It did yester-
day How can folks attach so
much importance to worldly
things?”
In the past decad many bless-
ings have come to aged Ameri-
cans and it has become common
knowledge that we need their
spiritual influence their wisdom
and their votes to help build a bet-
ter social structure

Lieut Governor
Hurst In Race For
t!o :
w
Irvin Bare!
OKLAHOMA CITY March-
18 Irvin Hurst who placed sec-
ond in 1950 announced this week
for the Democratic nomination for
lieutenant governor
A former statehouse reporter
and political writer Hurst is now
in the insurance business in Okla-
homa City where he is active in
civic affairs He is retiring chair-
man of the Oklahoma City plan-
ning commission and the only ap-
pointive member (non-salaried)
of the new state commissions pre-
paring master plans for the Capi-
tol and medical center
Commenting on the Incumbent
seeking a sixth term after 20
years in office Hurst observed:
“A friend summed up the situa-
tion quite well recently when he
declined to run for a third term
for local office He said "if pub-
lic office is an honor it should be
shared and if it is a burden that
should be shared too’
"I think the same rule applies
to the office of lieutenant gover-
nor The constitution limits the
governor to one term but Oklaho-
ma has witnessed the spectacle
of one individual trying to make a
life tenure out of the office of
lieutenant governor” Hurst add-
ed “One of the important functions
of the lieutenant governor is serv-
ing as president of the state sen-
ate Apparently the public is not
aware of that responsibility — but
the legislature is all too keenly
aware of it There have been
many times in the last 20 years
when the senate was embarrassed
and even crippled by an inept pre-
siding officer thrust upon it
“Fortunately through news-
paper experience I have grown up
with many of the men in the sen-
ate And fortunately too I-have
had opportunity to gain valuable
experience as parliamentatrian in
official capacity I am confident
that I can work amicably with the
senate"
Hurst was born in Terre Haute
Ind Nov- 24 1904 He timed his
announcement for the 41st anni-
versary of his arrival in Oklaho-
ma having landed in Cushing
March '16 1913 where his father
located as oil field teaming con-
tractor In 1927 Hurst was graduated
from Oklahoma A&M college
where he was editor of the college
paper A year later he married
the former Marion Knapp whose
father the late Dr Bradford
Knapp was then president of the
college The Hursts have three
children: Randle a student at the
University of Oklahoma Carol a
student at A&M and Owen on
service with the air force in Ko-
rea Even a mild mistake must be
seen as a mistake in order to be
corrected how much more then
should one’s sins be seen and re-
pented of before they can be re-
duced to their native nothing-
ness! — Mary Baker Eddy
