MADDOX MAKES
FIRE REPORT
Okemah has a fire department
that she is proud of It is doubt-
ful if in ail the state a better
volrarieer department can be
found
Robert Tadl'x has been chief
since 1929 and he has handled the
department in such a way Shat it’s
reputation has extended beyond
the limits of Okemah
Chief Maddox submits the fol-
lowing report for the year 1934:
Calls answered1 43 15 of these
were grass fires
Getting to fires 288 blocks
were covered and 5950 feet of
hose was laid
Chemicals consumed amounted

the report In all the year damage
done by fire amounted to $4524-
85 The town and the fire depart-
ment are to be congratulated on
this fine showing Not many
towns in the state the size of Oke
mah ithat can make as good an
accounting fer it’s fire depart-

GUTTER GETS
300 GALLONS
Sheriff Wes Kennedy and his
force were very busy Monday
morning pouring out about 300
gallons of confiscated booze We
feel sorry for the fishes in the
streams close about for the next
several days localise they are
liable to stage a fit of intoxica-
tion All gambling slot machines
were destroyed as was all the
still equipment that had been
taken in raids for quite some Cme
past
Judge Arthur Cochran issued an
order Saturday for the destruc-
tion cf slot machines and still
material and the pouring out of
the contraband liquor The ordet
provided that the still material
must be destroyed before being
sold for junk It was so handled
that it cannot be used in the mak-
ing of whiskey again and then
sold
BEN COCHRAN
IS CONSTABLE
The county commissioners at
their regular meeting on Monday
appointed our gocd friend Ben
Cochran as constable There has
been no officer in district No 3
since the resignation of John
Paul Cochran however ha3 been
acting in an official capacity
Ben Cochran is perhaps the old-
est man in point of service in law
enforcement in the county He has
had some official title almost all
the time since before statehood
and we regard him as a very com-
petent and conscientious officer
safe and sane at all times
We congratulate the commiss-
ioner and also Mr Cochran
