The Key With the Golden Chain
By Jo Katharine Ritchie
CHAPTER III
Thelma stood pale and unsteady
“Well I asu:e you Mr Norton
that I only played murderer”
There was a foreboding ele-
ment in the atmosphere-
“I’m sorry” Kathleen apolo-
gized her "trim neat figure mil-
itantly erect “but — ” — there was
something in her voice that added
to the guests’ premonition
“But what Kathleen?” Norton
asked surprised
“But I think I know who ha3
your key After the lights went
off I came over where Mr Bar-
low was standing suddenly I felt
him move toward you Just be-
fore the lights came on he has-
tily returned”
All eyes were turned to Bar-
low Barlow stood very still his face
a complete mask Automatically
he glanced at Norton held the
glance for a moment and then
as against his own volition he
smiled
“I’m sorry too Miss Carroll
that this has happened- Mr Nor-
ton here is your key” He hand-
ed Norton his key Norton took
it blank with amazement
The guests quickly broke up the
party cleverly trying to evade
embarrassment by returning to a
spirit of gayety
Barlow came over to Chris’
“Are you ready Miss Teeter?”
“I I promised Kathleen I’d help
her” Chris answered not really
wanting to say that but not know-
ing what else to say
He seemed disappointed and
quickly left with Norton
Soon the chairs were empty and
candles were burning low
“Well” Chris Teeter said un-
happily “one can’t fall in love
with a thief”
“But you’ve already fallen in
love” Kathleen accused
“Oh I didn’t know you knew-”
“Yes I know all right And I
also know how to sympathize with
you”
“You’re right Even if he
weren’t a thief I suppose I
wouldn’t have a chance He told
me about another girl She jilt-
ed him and now wants him back
lie declares frankly that he’s try-
ing to decide between us two But
now that he is a thief — ”
“I can’ understand it” Kath-
leen interrupted “they have been
buddies all their lives and now

Barlow deliberately steals Rob-
ert’s key”
“And each seems so fond of the
other- You know Kat they are
alike in so many ways Both
quixotic and desirable — ”
“But unlike ‘ in other ways
Kat inserted “Barlow is much less
distrait and remote than Robert”
“Remote?”
“Yes remote You see Chris
Barlow has at least told you that
he might love you But Bob —
well he’s never told me anything
at all like that”
Robert Norton and Richard
Barlow has reached the apart-
ment Barlow tapped a cigarette
offered Norton one and lighted
them both There was silence
long and humiliating
“Why did you do it Dick?”
Barlow was reticent then —
“You know Bob I’m sorry- I’ll
go tonight
Dick Jones and his wife were
enjoying another quiet evening at
home on the night of Kathleen’s
party A knock at the door brokr
the quietness The charming Mr
Chowning was ushered in
“Well this is a surprise” Dick
greeted “I haven’t seen you in
ages”
A chit-chat followed Finally
during a lull in the conversation
Mrs Chowning explained the real
purpose of her visit-
“During a conversation yester-
day Dick Mr Chism and I acci-
dently discovered tha we were
both being closely watched by a
certain doctor Later Mr Chism
informed me that you too were a
victim”
Dick frowned but remained si-
lent “I wondered if you could eolv®
tha riddle”
‘Does he ever ’ilk with you?”
“No” and then as an after-
thought “yes one day he did tell
me that he thought I was very
unusual with a wonderful person-
ality” Dick removed his reading
glasses and sat very still for the
fraction of a second finally — “I
admit Mrs Chowning that it is
very much of a puzzle but as yet
I haven’t solved it”
