Origin of Word -Bible."
The word bible is derived from the
Latin name biblia, which waa treated
ns a singular although it comea from
the Greek neuter plural, meaning "lit-
tle booka." This Oreek diminutive
was derived from byblus, or papyrus,
the famous material on which ancient
booka were written. The title "Bible"
waa first used about the middle of the
second Christian century in the so-
railed second epistle of Clement
(*iv„ 2).

preme court in a suit or the state
against Thomas Karrher from Wilson
county. Martin Peters, Hi. M. De Moss
and N. C. lilnford ran a joint In Wll^
son county In a building owned by'
Petera and Blnford. De Moss was ar-
rested, convicted and fined for running
the Joint. Afterwards Peters and Bin-
ford sold the building to Karcher.
Owing to the number of rases
against De Moss, an agreement was
made by the county officers whereby
De Moss paid $760 as part of the costs
and fines assessed against him, and
was pardoned by Ex-Gov. Hoch. Then,
as he had refuaed to pay any more of
i he fines and costs assessed against
him the state brought suit to recover
Trom the property the amount due oil
the finea. The court held that this
waa a proper proceeding and that the
property where a Joint bad been estab-
lished was always subject to a lien of
the state to collect the amount of the
fines and costs If the convicted joint-
keeper did not pay the bill.

New York, N Y.—Contending that
in the discovery of the Hudson river
as In the rase of the North Pole, there
is "honor enough for two," thousands
of Italians, smothered in Hags, biinting
and gay uniforms, paraded down
Broadway to the Mattery when they
unveiled a statue of Uiovanni Do Ver-
razano. whom historians describe as
the first trans-Atlantic voyage to ar-
rive in New York harbor. With no In
tentlon to belittle the achievements of
Henry Hudson, Italians maintain that
Verrasano discovered the Hudson in
1524, or 85 yeafs before the Half
Moon's arrival.

A. Henry Savage Landor, tbe Eng-
lish explorer, who will soon make an
attempt to reach the south pole, is of
the opinion that Lieut. Shackleton
failed through having a cumbersome
and unnecessarily large expedition.
Mr. Landor's theory i* that a small
caravan of trusted and hardy men,
lightly equlppod as in his expeditions
through Asia and Africa, ia best. Mr.
Landor's activity in aeronautic Inves-

an airship will be used by him in his
expedition.
