TRADITIONAL REPUBLICANISM
The action of the republican state
convention in the border state of Tex-
as in boldly opposing Ku-Klux Klan-
ism and reaffirming allegiance to the
constitution and American bill of
rights is not only the best of tradi-
tional republicanism but thrills the
hearts of republicans everywhere
-BJ
will provide for the attendance of all
children in the pteblic schools Many
thousands of signatures have been
obtained it is reported The proposed
amendment is similar to that I in
Oregon and elsewhere' Good will re
suit from these schemes if Catholics
bestir themselves to enlighten their
non-Catholic friends who are very
nearcs oi repuoiicans eyetnuwc
Not in years has a more heartening 'numerous and fair-minded— Western
m
stand been taken by a political con-
vention against the steady encroach-
ments on constitutionalism and the
trend toward class government than
is set forth in the following provi-
- sion taken from the Texas republi-
can platform:
“The republican party stands com-
mitted unreservedly for pure unde-
filed 100 per cent Americanism as
established by the founders of the
republic but we condemn the Ku-
Klux Klan or any similar organiza-
tion whose purpose is to restrain by
force threats intimidations or other-
wise the conduct of our citizens in the
'full exercise of freedom whether in
matters of politics religion or oc-
cupation or discriminates between
loyal Americans on the ground of
religious belief or nationality The
republican party stands pledged to
the preservation of a republican
form of government it regards with
apprehension the activity of any
group within or without the state
that directly or indirectly seeks to
usurp interfere with or to lessen the
full authority and power conferred
by the people upon their duly con-
stituted agencies of government We
stand for a government of law and
for vigorous and impartial enforce-
ment of all laws and we charge that
the democratic party in many por-
tions of the state if not in the entire
state is now under the control and
domination of the Ku Klux Klan” —

FREAKS ARE EXCEPTIONS
We cannot thrill our readers with
6000-volt stories about divocees mur-
ders hold-ups and “bathitig beau-
ties” as homely as Xanthippe Cath-
olic thought is constructive Our pol-
icy is not to pick out the odd bizarre
freakish happenings and thereby give
the impressions that the greater part
of the world is turning into an asy-
lum Our aim is to chronicle things
than interest the normal citizen— con-
structive action and events things
which guide people in making this
a better world After all the major-
ity of people are still decent and law-
abiding It makes no difference
whether a certain alleged murderess
used a hammer or a revolver the
crime of murder was committed It
is all the same whether a certain min-
ister kissed girls in his study or at a
picnic he gave scandal We do not
chronicle the crimes of erring min-
isters because there are many vir-
tuous ministers and reporting crime
' in detail encourages crime and there-
fore militates against good citizen-
ship Our purpose is to promote
Christian citizenship Now and then
our policy may appear too hum-
drum and “tame” But our readers
friends and advertisers know that
citizenship and decency are the things
that count
Just as we penned that last sen-
tence came news of the pasing of a
“yellow” journal to well-deserved
grave in the newspaper cemetery

DID YOU RECEIVE 112 LETTERS
LAST YEAR?
Anyone who didn’t receive 112 let-

the Postoffice Department show that
approximately 11335000000 letters
are going through the mails in the
United States every' year or an aver-
age of 112 letters for every man wo-
man and child The increase in the
last 10 or 15 years has been great
officials say pointing to the count
of 1907 when 7103000000 letters
or 78 per capita were carried The
United States leads the world in the

per capita number of letters carried
by British post is about 84 annually

THE “OLD-FASHIONED” CHURCH
It is greatly to be feared that the
Church must plead guilty to the
charge that she is old-fashioned
There is no escaping it Here are
some of the counts:
The Church is old-fashioned enough
to believe in the sanctity of marriage
and to repudiate divorce to cherish
modesty in girls and purity in boys
to think that the vile dances and in-
decent plays and nasty novels corrupt
society The Church is so far behind
the times as to frown on gambling
at bridge and fradulent advertising
and reckless motoring and ruinous
competition so primitive indeed in
her view of society as to believe in
freedom and the rights of the peo-
ple and the duty of men to organize
for their own' protection — nay even
to believe that property is a trust
and that it is not lawful to do what
one will with one’s own
And yet? and yet? — ask the ques-
tion again? If the Church old-fashioned?
If to be old-fashioned means
to have no message for the present
age we can answer roundly and
heartily “No” For who can find any
thing better for the curing of our
present ills than these same old-
fashioned things: God and Christ
duty and love and reverence modesty
and purity and temperance and un-
worldliness Get down on your knees Christian
people and thank God you are old-
fashioned and pray to be delivered
from the lure of the present age—

The National Conference of Cath

September at the Catholic University
will be able to announce the realiza
tion of a long cherished ambition a
nother real service to Society the
publication of the first Directory of
Catholic Charities in the United
States Ever since the foundation of
the Conference in 1910 there has been
an urgent demand for a national dir-
ectory But because of the many dif-
ficulties in the way of obtaining the
necessary data attempts to compile
this work failed The first attempt
was made by Rev Dr Wm J Kerby
first Secretary of the Conference in
1912 but because of the lack or or-
ganization of Catholic charitable work
at that time it was impossible to ob-
tain sufficient jdata to warrant pub
lication
The “Directory of Charitable Chari-
ties in the United States” is a loose
leaf octave' volume of four hundred
pages including a very complete clas-

would at first suggest The topic

fairly comprehensive idea of the con-

When Reginald Dunn aad Joseph
O’Sullivan the slayers of Field Mar-
shal Wilson who were hanged last
Thursday were about to be sentenc-
ed to death and were asked if they
had anything to say why sentence of
death should not be imposed Dunn
attempted to read a statement but
was prevented from doing so In the
press report of the final day of the
trial which was generally published
in this country an extract from the
statement was given which left the
impression that the sole motive for
the killing was the resentment of the
two accused that self-determination
had been denied to Ireland while
granted to other small nations as the
result of the World War
From a sister of Joseph O’Sullivan
sentenced with Dunn a full copy of
Dunn’s suppressed statement was ob-
tained by “The Irish Independent”
and transmitted by Mr J H Cox as-
sociate editor of that paper to the
N C W C News Service This full
statement reveals that the principal
reason Dunn alleged as having in'
duced himself and his companion to
shoot Sir Henry Wilson was that Sir
Henry they alleged was “the man
behind what is known in Ireland as
the Orange Terror” Dunn’s complete
prepared statement follows:
Dunn’s Full Statement
“My friend and I stand here charg-
ed with the offense of murder and
I have no doubt but that from the
evidence placed before you by the
prosecution you will find us both
guilty With regard to the charges
of attempted murder we merely fired
as everyone must know to try and
escape arrest The offense of mur-
der is a very serious matter and any
act which results in the loss of hu-
man life requires very grave and sub-
stantial reasons We have never un-
til now been charged with any crime
As you have heard from the police
officer who gave evidence as to our
characters and our previous records
we have both been in the British
army We both joined voluntarily
for the purpose of taking human life
in order that the principles for which
this country stodd should be upheld
and preserved These principles we
were told were self-determination and
freedom for small nations
Self-Determination
“We both as I have said fought
for these principles and were com-
mended for doing so and I imagine
that several of you gentlement of the
jury did likewise We came back
from France to find that self-determination
had been given to some na-
tions we had never heard of but that
it had been denied to Ireland We
found on the contrary that our coun-
try was being divided into two coun-
tries — that a Government had been
set up for the Belfast district and
that under that Government outrages
were being perpetrated that are a
disgrace to civilization many of the
outrages being committed by men in
uniform and in the pay of the Bel-
fast Government We took out part
in supporting the aspirations of our
fellow-countrymen in the same way
as we took part in supporting the na-
tions of the world who fought for
the rights of small nationalities

What was his policy? And what did
he stand for? You have all read in

Opening of De Vargas Fiesta In
September
(By N C W C News Service)
Santa Fe' N M Aug 14 — Sixty
Knights of Columbus in cassocks will
take part in the great pageant open-
ing the De Vargas fiesta in Septem-
ber representing the early Francis-
can missionaries who came to this
territory more than three hundred
years ago and later to conquer the
territory wit hthe cross of Christ
The greater number will take part
as Cranciscan monks in the episode
of 'Onate (1596) but a number of
others will be in various other scenes
as the taking of Santa Fe by the
great general De Vargas accompani-
ed by the Franciscans
At a recent meeting of the-Knights
of Columbus Col Ralph Twitchell'
director of the fiesta and a non-
Catholic appeared before the coun-
cil and requested the Knights to take
the important roles in the pageant
In the course of his remarks Colonel
Twitchell paid an extraordinary trib-
ute to the influence of the Francis-
cans in founding the Christian civili-
zation of the Southwest
“These men came to this wilder-
ness peopled with heathens more
than three hundred years ago” he
said “They endured all kinds of
hardships and fatigue for the sole
purpose of bringing to these people
the Christian religion Long before
there was any other permanent set-
tlement in any other part of the
country Santa Fe was the seat of a
Christian government and civiliza-
tion and weilded an influence that
was felt from the banks of the Mis-
sissippi to the shores of the Pacific
ocean
“It is a fittin gthing that you
Knights of Clumbus the representa-
tives of that religion established here
by the early Franciscans should rep-
resent these missionaries and mar-
tyrs in the great pageant which opens
the fiesta
“The pageant in these days is the
great means of instructing the young
through vision In the pageant there
is pictured to them the stirring
scenes of long ago which had such
an important bearing on us and our
existence today Children who are
made familiar with the history of
their country will be the better citi-
zens for the knowledge
“The monks who myou will repre-
sent they and their companions
cleared the way in the wilderness so
that we of today might here live and
enjoy the fruits of their labors”
tern wherein each denomination has
representation on the teaching staff
proportional to the number of chil-
dren of its persuasion shall be re-
tained is Jthe important issue being
discussed by those interested Jn edu-
cational affairs in Baden In prac-
tice all forces and factors which have
weight in the community are united
in favor of continuation of the pres-
ent system which has existed since
1876 In principle faithful Catholics
headed by their Archbishop favor the
denominational school The politi-
cians of the Left demand more or less
openly the secular or non-religious
school and it is along these lines
that the issue ultimately will be de-
termined Evidence of the strength of the op-
position to any weakening of the re-
ligious influence in the schools is
given by the results of a campaign
for membership carried on by the
Catholic Parents Association which
opposes secularization of the educa-
tional system Overwhelming majori-
ties of Catholics irrespective of party
affiliations are joining the associa-
tions In places were election votes
are as a rule equally divided between
the Center and the Social Democratic
parties ninety per cent of the Cath-
olics are affiliating - In many cases
even non-Catholics hpve affiliated as
an expression of their opposition to
a lessening of the religious element
in education
It must be remembered however
that the contempt of the people for
politicians is heartily reciprocated
