Mr C A Windle
Editor The Iconoclast
Chicago Illinois
Sir:
I have been a reader of the Icono-
clast for the last two years during
which time I have missed only three
copies and my failure to secure the
periodical on these occasions was due
to the fact that I was in isolated sec-
tions of the country where the maga
zine was not procurable Now I want
to say at the outset that I have the
greatest respect for you as a writer
and also thatl have found myself in
hearty and unreserved agreement
with you on many of the issues which
you have so valiantly and persistently
defended or opposed your support or
opposition being due in most every
instance I am sure to a sincere and
profound conviction that your stand
was the right one — I mean that you
have usually written and fought for
what you believe to be right
Now in the first place the Ku
Klux Klan is an exclusively NON
POLITICAL organization and when
you say that the purpose of its or-
ganization and its existence is to
“Ulsterize” America implying by this
term that its object is to dominate
and control the political and govern-
mental institutions of the country you
make a statement which is essentially
and maliciously false a lie which was
perpetrated by the enemies of the
order and by shrewd and unscrupu-
lous politicians in order to secure the
anti-Klan vote I defy you to show
one instance where the Klan has tak-
en the initiative in any political con-
troversy or contest The only in-
stances in which the Klan has enter-
ed the field of political combat have
been in those states where political
rascals have raised the issue in order
to attract the anti-Klan vote and in
most cases so loath are the mem-
bers of this order to deviate from
the fundamental tenet of the order
this has only been done as in Oregon
and Texas for instance where its
very existence was challenged and
threatened by the political and re-
ligious miscreants and bigots who a-
lone are responsible for the bitter-
ness and hatred that has been aroused
and fanned until members of the Klan
have been compelled to organize and
unite politically in order to maintain
the integrity and security of the in-
stitution Are you so blind that you can not
perceive the real source of all this
anti-Klan propaganda? As the editor
of a pro-Roman Catholic publication
it is not to be expected that you
should be partial to the Klan How-
tions (See section 406 paragraph 1
ever as the editor of the magazine i on page 132 of the 1921 school pam-
founded by W C Brann and the in- phlet) If the supervision is not
heritor as it were of his honor and
prestige as a man and editor it does
seem that the faintest spark of jus-
tice woul4 restrain you from mani-
festing such unwarranted and rieS'
picable obloquy toward an institu-
tion which is distinctively and un
qualifidely American and as such one
which W C Brann would be the first
to defend and champion
Now don’t reply with any anti-
Catholic pussyfooting Everyone ex-
cept that bunch of narrow fanatical
Catholic hierarchs know that the Klan
makes no fight on the Catholic Chur-
ch as such It is not because the Klan

A Championjfof the Cause
The situation in Oklahoma and Oregon brings out clearly convincingly
and forcibly the need of a live efficient and fearless Catholic paper in
every State of the Union
Quite recently a Catholic weekly was started in Oklahoma and well for
the Catholics of Oklahoma that they have today- a champion in their new
paper — “The Catholic Home” otherwise the 60000 Catholics of that State
would be at the mercy of ignorant fanatics pledged to destroy the Catholic
schools of that State
What we say of Oklahoma and Oregon we say of every State in the
Union The crying need of the hour in every State is a live fearless cham
pion of our constitutional rights because we cannot depend upon the secu
lar papers to defend or champion our cause
The Ku Klux Klan and similar fanatics are not the only enemies of the
Catholic church or the Catholic school or the Catholic home Any Catholic
family that refuses to subscribe for and read a staunch Catholic weekly if
they can afford to pay for a secular paper is found in the ranks of the
enemies of Catholic interests in America Christ well says if you are not
with ME you are against ME — so with the Catholic press if you are not
with it — you are against it and with its enemies! Where do you stand on
this point? You take a daily paper — you pay for it — you read all the rot
and trash and moral filth found between its leaves — but you can’t afford
to pay for a Catholic paper — you can’t find time to read a Catholic papci
you can’t find time to boost a Catholic paper 1 Where your heart is there
is your treasure also! Your heart is where? With God His church and
the paper that defends your Catholic rights
We have many such loyal Catholic readers and subscribers! We
realized this while trying to pay for our new press — but alas we have many
whose hearts are elsewhere — they have no interest in their Catholic paper!
Well the day is coming when such will have to fight for their Catholic
rights as they now are fighting in Oregon Oklahoma etc In that day
they will realize how very much they will need the services of" their Western
Catholic! To be forewarned is to be forearmed!
This is excellent observation on

In a letter to the press Stephen A
Lowell well-known Oregon lawyer
says:
As a Protestant in religion as a
member of the Masonic fraternity
and as a native-born American be-
lieving in the ancient standards of
human liberty namely free speech
free press freedom of education and
the right to worship God as the con-
science distates the writer desires to
publicly take a stand in opposition to
the measure to be submitted to the
people in November known as the
compulsory education bill It is in-
deed regrettable that Oregon has be-
come the testing ground of fanatic-
ism and radicalism
"The very title of this bill is a mis-
nomer This state already has a
comprehensive compulsory education
statute (See chapter 19 of title 21
of the code) Likewise the existing
law provides that all subjects taught
in the schools shall be taught in the
English language (See section 2223
3 on page 1274 of the statutes) The
legislature has clothed school au-
thorities with investigatory power
over all private educational institu-
ample the legislature can easily
amend
“It is apparent that the funda-
mental object of this bill is to pre-
vent those citizens who deem religi-
ous education essential to the welfare
of their children from sending their
offspring to schools where religion
and morality are stressed The Bible
has been substantially driven from
the public schools Are those insti-
tutions where the Book of Books still
remains now to be destroyed?

UNCONSTITUTIONAL
Oklahoma is threatening to disgrace itself and blacken the good name
it has heretofore borne by attempting to abridge the freedom of her people
in open defiance to the plainly expressed provisions and safeguards of the
Constitution of the United States
AMENDMENT 1: “Congress shall make no laws respecting an estab
lishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” Is it not
the exercise strictly of a religious tenet for the citizen to seek to give his
child a religious education? Is not the proposed Oklahoma law an attempt
to abridge the free exercise of this religious prerogative? Would not such
a law violate not only the intent but the plainly expressed language of the
Constitution? Does Oklahoma think it has the right to do that which the
Constitution of the United States forbids Congress to do?
AMENDMENT FOURTEEN ARTICLE li “No State shall make
or inforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of
citisens of the United States” Is not an attempt of Oklahoma to forbid
her people American citisens the right to educate their children in a
private institution a direct and flagrant violation of this wise Constitutional
safeguard? Surely does it attempt to ABRIDGE their PRIVILEGES

Catholics Fighting Latest Move To Dechristianize

SOCIALISTS WORKED ARTFULLY
Institutions Have Been Scene Of Violent Struggle

By Dr Frederick Funder
(By N C W C News Service)
Vienna July 29 — Prohibition of
prayers in the public schools of
Vienna is the latest development in
the campaign which is being carried
on here for the purpose of removing
religious features of the present sys-
tem of education Chairman Glockell
of the Vienna Town School Board
has just anounced that beginning with
the opening of schools this autumn
the practice of reciting the Lord’s
Prayer and the Ave Maria accom-
panied by the Sign of the Cross will
be officially prohibited Glockell is a
Free-Mason and a Socialist
It has been stipulated by former
school authorities that the ancient
custom of reciting the prayers men-
tioned should be continued In all the
public schools and overwhelming ma-
jority of the pupils profess the Cath-
olic faith which justified the use of
this form of prayer The non-Catholic
minority was of course not com-
pelled to take part This practice by
which the Christian character of the
public school was still manifested has
been for a long time a thorn in the
side of the Free-Masons and free-
thinkers who have their strongest
political representation in the Socia-
list Party of Austria The Socialists
now have amajority in the Vienna
Municipal Council and are taking de-
termined action tending toward de-
christianizing the public schools
Since the Socialists came into pow-
er amid the uproar of political pas-
sions during the Austrian revolution
they have been moving methodically
to wipe out Christian education from
the schools of Vienna and to abolish
the practice of reciting school-prayers
They set to work in a very artful
maner At first orders were issued de-
claring that no teacher could be com-
pelled to say the school-prayer with
the children This however was not
strict prohibition and in many of

the schools the teachers continued to
recite the prayers in spite of the
persecutions they had to endure at
the hands of their Socialist official
superiors In other schools the pupilB
of their own accord continued the
recitation of prayers without the co-
operation of the teachers
The next step was the action taken
by certain school directors who in an
effort to ensconce themselves in the
good graces of the Socialist chiefs
proceeded to prohibit prayers in the
individual schools under their super-
vision In this they overstepped the
bounds of their legitimate sphere of
action Vigorous protests on the part
of the parents were aroused by this
prohibition During the past year the
Vienna schools have been the scene
of many violent struggles and Toud
demonstrations which constituted the
answer given by many thousahds of
energetically protesting parents to
the despotic Socialist municipal ad-
ministration and school directors
On the ground that the disagree-
ment and disorder thus created have
been gaining ground and can be en-
dured no longer the Socialist leaders
now declare that it is necessary to
settle the matter by summarily pro-
hibiting the recitation of school pray-
ers There is no doubt but that the
educational efficiency and discipline
of the schools were being greatly im-
paired by these impassioned disputes
brought abouty by the Socialist meas-
ures It is also true that thanks to
these disturbances even the children
were divided into two hostile camps
filed with unnatural hatred and at
war with each other For these rea-
sons it must be admitted that the
existing state of affairs is untenable
The Socialist rulers however now
draw the conclusion that this gives
them the right to eliminate from the
schools of the Austrian capital the
prayer which has been customary
since the establishment of the first
schools in this country
