TIIE DUAL FUNCTION
Tiie dual function of the present day paper
is to print the news ns it occurs and to in-
terpret if correctly
Oklahoma newspapers on the whole art
diametrically opposed to this policy They
print the news that suits their side of the
tpiostion and editorialize on their winning
points This can he done safely in a mono-
polized territory This is being done here ii
Oklahoma (lily
For a public official no matter wluit his
creed or party to lie forced to print Ilis own
news sheet because dailies refuse to give his
side of the question is a rebuff to those news-
papers who shut their columns to any and all
news that might throw a favorable light on
those whom tliey oppose
Let us have both sides of the question There
are a few college-bred individuals in Oklaho-
ma who think for themselves nml who can
rend between the lines of Klanuish editorials
They resent this self-opiniated news in col-
umns that should be given over to ungarbled
and colorless reports
Let Oklahoma Oity have a fair paper and
we will not have to purchase the broad-minded
Tulsa World at news stands
THE ANGELIC HOSTS
The month of October is dedicated to the
devotion of tiie Holy Rosary It is a form
of prayer which is very familiar to Catholics
the world over and consists of fifteen decades
of ‘‘Hail Mary’s” with an ‘‘Our Father” be-
tween each decade For fitch of these there
is suggested for pious meditation one of the
great mysteries of our redemption The in-
stitution of the Rosary is attributed to St
Dominie The saint in the days of the Albi-
gensian heresy preached tiie devotion first
in Toulouse and then throughout all Spain
us an antidote to heresy ami sin
Since that time the Rosary lias occupied a
prominent place in the history and practices
of tiie Catholic Church It was in memory of
the victory gained by tiie Christian arms at
Lepanto that l’bpe j’lius V established the
feast which is now kept on the seventh of
October and solemnized on the first Sunday
of October Europe was saved from a Moslem
invasion when the licet of Don John of Aus-
tria overcame the Turks in 1571 at a time
when processions were being made at Home
by members of the Rosary Confraternity and
prayers were being offered for a Christian
victory At an earlier date t lie Albigcnsian
heretics were defeated at the l'attle of Murct
in 1213 and legend lias attributed the victory
to the recitation of the heads by St Dominie
On many occasions Heaven lias signally re-
warded the faith of those who luui recourse
to this form of devotion in time of special
danger
It is evident then that there is no form
of prayer for the laity which the Church has
encouraged more than the telling of their
brails It lias not only the sanction of au-
thority to recommend it but in itself is com-
posed of (lie prayers than which none could
have a more sublime origin or better express
man’s aspirations for Heaven in t lit form of
pet it ion
The mysteries recall the great events in the
life of our Savior and the Hlessed Virgin and
in the words of Leo XIII ‘‘they lead erring
man to find and to follow the way consecrated
by the Man God and moistened by the tears
of Ilis Hlessed Mother”
o-
Today the Church celebrates the feast of
the dedication of Saint Michael This festi
val brings to our attention the glorious Arch
angel at the head of the heavenly army It
calls to mind that day when there was a
great battle in heaven when Michael and his
angels fought with the dragon and the drag
on fought and his angels Our interest on
this feast day centers about those heavenly
powers whose mysterious combat! fills the first
page of recorded history
'flie existence of angels ns we call these
heavenly spirits is attested by the traditions
of all nations and by 1 lie lautliority of the holy
Scripture The Church teaches as defined
by the Lateral! Council that in the beginning
God created simultaneously two natures the
spiritual and the corporal and afterwards
lie created man who is composed of both
There is a graduation in tiie scale of nature
Creation begins with those Who aro made to
tint likeness of God and ends nt the outer
circle of nothingness While God is an in-
finite being Ilis creatures are forever finite
At present wo are particularly interested in
the angelic creation The angel though en-
tirely independent of matter is not! abso-
lutely simple for in’ him action is distrinet
from power and power is dist inlet from) es-
sence He is superior to man whoso intellect
cannot operate without the aid of t lie senses
The angelic doctor makes this distinction :
‘‘Compared with ours how enlni and how
luminous is tho knowledge of pure spirit!
Tliey are not doomed to tho intricate dis-
coursings of our reason' which mins 'nftei the
truth composes ami analyzes and laboriously
draws conclusions from1 premises They in-
stantaneously apprehend the whole compass
of primary truths Their intuition is so
prompt so lively so penetrating that it is
impossible for tlient to be surprised ns we
are into error If they deceive themselves
it must be’ of their own will The perfection
of their will is equal to the perfection of their
intellect They know not what it is to lie
disturbed by tho violence of appetite Their
love is without emotion and their hatred of
evil is as calm and as wisely tempered as theii
love A will so free can know no perplexity
as to its1 aims net inconstancy in its resolu-
tions Whereas with us long and anxious
meditation is necessary before wo make a
decision It is the property of the angels to
A REAL HONEST-TO-GOD
RED-BLOODED AMERI-
CAN GOVERNOR
(The Western Catholic)
Oklahoma may he somewhat backward
along certain lines of culture and so-called
advanced ideals of civilization as compared
to other States!
Oklahoma’s fair name may have been
blotched and disgraced by the doings of an
un-American hunch of hooded gangsters
Hut Oklahoma can well afford to stand
erect step with the grace and the pride of
a queen and point her finger with pride to
(iovernor Walton her Governor and say —
‘‘There’s a man! There’s an American 1
There’s lav Goternor — a real honcst-to-(lod
red-blooded American !”
When elected 1m pledged his word to the
people of Oklahoma not to let the masked K
K K run Oklahoma!
(iovernor Walton has kept his word! lie
has redeemed his pledge!
True there was no law on the book of Okla-
homa against any particular masked organi-
zation! That alone would have satisfied u
politician — but not Governor Walton!
lie saw that under the old common law
dating hack to tiie ancient Homans any man
appearing on the higlnvny disguised was and
should lie regarded as a man of evil intent
and a criminal bent on disturbing tho pence!
This satisfied (iovernor Walton’s mind
hence ho compelled the Kluxers to unmask 1
Of course the cowardly Kluxers call the
Governor’s aet the net of a politician!
Of course sneaking editors in sympathy
with tho creeping Kluxers insinuate unworthy
motives on tho part of Governor Walton—
but every red-blooded Amcrieun must and will
join Oklahoma in proclaiming Governor Wal-
ton ns a red-blooded American whose name
will ring adow n future ages to t ho pride of
all truo Americans
There is not a Governor in America — not a
mayor of any city in America who could not
do with justice what the bravo Governor Wal-
ton lias done
All talk about an executive having ‘‘no
luw” back of him is childish twaddle served
up to fools and peddled around by political
tricksters I
Walton of Oklahoma we aro proud of you I
You have done well I
or despotism” a jgroup of Oklahoma dailj
newspaper publishers have brought a heavj
indictment against Gov J O Walton Thej
accuse Governor Walton of attempting “t
nullify rights guaranteed under our Const!
tution and to halt the lawful process of gov-
ernment” These publishers charging that Gove
Walton lias violated the Constitution sup-
pressed free speech overthrown the civil pro
cess and assumed despotic powers declare
that ‘‘the newspapers of the State uphold
rigid adherence to all the laws and they are
united in demanding that the constitutional
rights of assembly free press civil courts
grand juries and jury trial by law be pre-
served inviolate”
' No American can gainsay the rightness of
this declaration for tiie maintenance of con-
stitutional government Assuming that the
substance of the charges against Governor
Walton are tme and that he has gone bcyonll
his executive powers and that ’there is not
sufficient reason in the conditions existing
in Oklahoma for putting the whole State
under martial law are the newspapers doing
their whole duty jn fighting the alleged of-
ficial lawlessness of (iovernor Walton? Have
they done their duty in exposing and fighting
the conditions that June induced Governor
Walton to go to extremes?
The publishers assert that there has been
no riot insurrection nor rebellion in any part
of the State nor have the civil authorities
been defied or overthrown and that “the
criminal records of counties and cities in
Oklahoma show that there has been less crime
during the past year than any year sincei the
war ’ ’
Are not the publishers evading tiie point
in these statements? (iovernor Walton does
not charge that the civil authorities have been
overthrown hut that the civil authorities in
narts of the State at least have been controlled
by the Ku Klux Klan and have protected
lynchers who have Hogged and committed
outrages upon citizens There have been no
criminal records of these outrages because
the Governor charges there have been no
proseeiit ions of the perpetrators In other
words that the civil government of the State
has been superseded by tbe invisible govern-
ment of the Klan who have worked their will
unoii those whose conduct they condemned
with immunity from criminal proseeiit ion
We ask the Oklahoma publishers is it not
true that floggings ami other outrages have
been perpetrated in Tulsa and other parts of
Oklahoma? Is it not true that in a number
of eases of this kind there have been no pros-
ecutions and no attempt to bring the perpo-
t rators to just iee ?
We ask the Oklahoma publishers whether
or not there is truth in the charge that mem-
bers of the Ku Klux Klan are in office charged
with the enforcement of law? Whether or
not there are communities in Oklahoma in
which the civil government is in control of
members of the Ku Klux Klan? The pub-
lishers state that “the newspapers of tho
State uphold rigid adherence to all Hie laws”
They are upholding it now when Governor
Walton goes to extremes to eliminate condi
tions which lie declares make for lawlessness
and (lie breaking down of civil government
but did they uphold it when these conditions
were being created?
Have the newspapers of Oklahoma done
their full duty in exposing lawless methods
aims and purposes of the Ku Klux Klan?
Have they denounced the un-American nil
) constitutional and menacing purposes and
methods of this masked organization which
lias been formed to foment religious and racial
prejudices and hatreds and to work its will
upon those whom it opposes in utter violation
of the principles of justice and liberty and
regardless of the Foust it ut ion and the laws
and of the authority of tiie civil government?
Have they exposed and denounced the grow-
ing (tower of this masked organization nml its
effort to control the civil government so that
its members may he protected in their law
less nets?
Have the publishers from the beginning
fougld the insidious propaganda of the Ku
Klux Klan the success of whose objects won
be far more destructive to constitutional free
government and to law and order than any-
tiling that might be attempted by a public of-
ficial who in the effort to break its power
exceeds the limit of his authority?
Are t hey now lighting the Ku Klux Klan
as vigorously as they are fighting Governor
Walton’s efforts to break its power? Are
they standing firmly by Governor Walton in
all his legitimate efforts to put down klan
lawlessness and to prevent klan control of
the vivil government? Are they not rather
by their extreme attitude nml persistent op-
position to (iovernor Walton making his task
the more difficult helping to drive him to
greater txtrenics and encouraging tho klan
leaders? in short in concentrating on the
issue of “constitutional government or des-
potism” nro tliey not wJiolly overlooking the
oilier issue of constitutional visible state gov-
ernment against invisible government?
The Oklahoma newspapers must come be-
fore the liar of public opinion with clean
hands They must prove their unalterable
opposition to all lawlessness whether com-
mitted by the Governor who is trying to put
down klan lawlessness and to punish those
guilty of it or committed by a masked or-
ganization seeking power otid immunity to
achieve objects and accomplish lawless pur-
poses which will subvert nil justice liberty
and constitutional government
Would It not bo better for tho Okluhoma
newspapers to indorso tho good purposes of
tho Governor and all tho lawful moans that
he has undertaken to accomplish them and to
advise and co-opcrato with him In achieving
his ends by logit imato means?
