By REV WILLIAM F SAUER
“IN MY FATHER’S' HOUSE
THERE ARE MANY MAN-
SIONS AND WE KNOW THAT
IF OUR EARTHLY HOUSE OF
THIS HABITATION BE DIS-
SOLVED WE HAVE A BUILD-
' ING OF GOD NOT MADE WITH
HANDS BUT ETERNAL IN
HEAVEN”
The Church of God is a geat fam-
ily It has a head and members God
is the Father of this great family and
the people of the human race consti-
tute its members In this large fam-
ily there are three distinct divisions
One group of this family is here upon
because it was
Father
But if our earthly home is so dear
to us if we love even to go back in
memory to the hofne of our childhood
if we strive to keep up our home
make sacrifices and go to extremes to
make our earthly home pleasant and
attractive how much more should we
be solicitous for our true Home a
house not made with hands but eter-
nal in Heaven No matter how good
it may be there is no earthly home
but that has its sufferings and its
sorrows But our true home in Hea-
ven shall never know of sickness and
of good things the note of sadness
shall never ring through its halls but
earth striving day by day to save instead there will be fullness of joy
their immortal souls by fighting the
good fight against the world the flesh
and the devil This is called the
Church Militant Other members of
this family have left this world but I
having offended God they are de-
tained in the Prison Hails of Pur-
gatory to atone for their faults and
offenses This is the Church Suffer-
ing The third group have reached
God to be with him for all eternity
They have reached their true home
They are the Church Triumphant
Every family has a home and
though children may be distant yet
they long for home And the real
home of the entire human race is
Heaven! Who is there who does not
know the joys of a good home? No
matter how humble it may be it is the
dearest spot on earth Who is there
who" does not find delight even in
thinking of home? We like to look
down the years into the home of oursisters’ Parents and the dear friends
childhood and though its rooms were I that we knew in life And as every
small and the walls were pluster-brok-1 family has a loving mother so the
en the furniture rough and creaking Spiritual Mother of the Church will
and though perhaps God gave us little be there close to our divine Lord the
of the world’s goods yet we love it ' Son of God Such is the home that
all the more We love to look back was created for us such is the home
and see the old familiar faces we for which we must strive “Strive to
love to recall the group around the j lay up treasures in heaven where the
family table and to think again of moth will not enter nor rust corrode
those things that marked our home nor theives break through and steal”
from the hundreds of others — the low j Lay up treasuures in heaven by your
stop the old-fashioned window shut- 1 prayers and good works lay up treas-
ters the tree that stood before the urea by your charity by your kind-
door From garret to cellar the place ness and consideration for your fel-
is full of memories We loved the low-man by your chaste language and
old place not because it was more guarded speech lay up treasures es-
beautiful than other dwellings not ' pecially by suffering the ills the dls-
because it differed from any other ' appointments and reverses in this
building in the block we have loved ' vale of tears “Rejoice and be glad
the spot because it was Home It for your reward is exceedingly great
was because Mother was there and I in the Kingdom of Heaven”
There we will realize the greatest
happiness our hearts ever desired
there we will experience joys that will
last forever and forever a joy that is
even beyond our present comprehen-
sion “The eye hath not seen nor
hath the ear heard nor hath it enter-
ed into the heart of man to conceive
what God has prepared for those that
love Him”
In every home the greatest joy
comes from the sacred ties of love and
friendship and so will it be in Hea-
ven There will we mingle with our
brethren in the faith the long line of
saints who lived their lives for Christ
the great number of martyrs who
poured out their blood for Christ the
host of holy virgins who preserved
their bodies for Christ the confessors
and doctors of the Church the Dis-
ciples and Apostles our own brothers

A Chicago Baptist church has ac-
cepted as its pastor a young cleric
who was refused ordination in the
East because he expressed open doubt
as to the Virgin Birth of Christ A
newspaper lauds the incident as be-
ing expressive of Chicago’s “reputa-
tion for religious freedom of
thought” Bit by’bit we are getting
to know what protestant ministers
do not believe The difficulty is to
find out just what they do believe
Most of the protestant ministers of
the younger generation who have
achieved a national reputation have
won their spurs by advertising their
doubts and denials It is a pity that
so many youthful clerics start their
career by-helping to pull down what
faith there is in the world before
they know whether or not they will
be able to rebuild more solidly that
which they are destroying

In Church Attack
Not every Presbyterian minister
wants to see boxing outlawed One
in Michigan City wants to know
“what is the matter with our teach-
ers of morals” and devotes a sermon
to the praising of the “honest clean
and brave use of the gun or the
mitts” In the course of it he re-
marked thut a man who could do
what Dempsey did to Firpo “gives
the world a healthy holy thrill” I
repeat the preacher’s opening ques-
tion: “What is the matter with our
teachers of morals?” Is that all they
have to talk about? Is the world so
gooil that the old moral exhortations
are superfluous ? Or is it that a
preacher has to steer a cautious the-
ological passage in order to avoid of-
fending the susceptibilities of people
who enjoy a glorious religious free-
dom of thought?
- It is strange to think that the

cation May wenot become rulers of
this incomparable instrument? Why
not? Why should not the State of
the Workmen be able to create a net
of motion pictures and introduce more
and more these methods of education
and diversion into the life of the peo-
ple The motion picture is also a
competitor of the Church and this
competition can be made disastrous
to the Church if we complete the sep-
aration of Church and State by unit-
ing the Socialist State with the mov-
ies To divert the multitude from ec-
clesiastical rites irreligious propa-
ganda alone is not sufficient It is
it seems very necessary but in its di-
rect practical influence it is limited

Supplant Church With Motion
Pictures
After this significant confession
concerning the results of Bolshevistic
agitation against Christianity up-to-date
Trotsky makes the following an-
nouncement of the Communist pro-
gram: “In order to aid in the struggle
against the Church we call upon the
most powerful theatrical instrument
the motion picture Without any hier-
archy the cinema produces on the
white screen pictures more fuscinut-
ing than any Church Mosque or Syn-
agogue more fascinating than the
richest of these Houses of God can
show after thousands of years of ex-
perience In the Church there is al-
ways represented only one act always
the same year after year The cine-
ma will show on the same day and
at the same hour Pagan Easter Jew-
ish Easter Christian Easter in their
historican scenes and ritual imita-
tions The cinema will amuse teach
surprise people stimulate the imag-
ination and liberate them from the
necessity of attending Chui-ch The
motion picture is the great competi-
tor of the ale-shops and the Church
We must seize this instrument at any
price ”
This document is instructive pre-
cisely because its cynicism is so re-
markably audacious The Bolshevist
leaders have recognized the educa-
tional importance of the motion pic-
ture They are trying now wherever
they have any influence to get con
trol of this instrument In order to be
able to mold the spirits of innumer-
able thousands in harmony with their
Communistic designs
Catholics Should be on Guard
In this program there is a new ad-
monition for Catholics to watch the
motion picture closely to scrutinize
its spiritual influence and where
practicable to direct that influence
along proper lines There is no mis-
take in assuming that the program
is designed for operation not only in
Russia but also abroad It will be
pushed with the backing of vast fi-
nancial resources Bolshevism has not
yet given up its plans for expansion
and it pursues Its aims with astonish-
ing tenacity It has sufficient adher-
ents in all countries to enlist support -for
its “underground” work which
may now be directed toward gaining
control of the motion picture Where
the brutal means employed against
Chmristianity so far break down the
Communists hope to gain succees by
the application of gentler and more
insidious methods
