Consistent Catholics
By REV WILLIAM F SAUER
If there were a society in our coun-
try or in any country with a mem-
bership of some twenty millions of
people and if all these members were
united in a strong bond of brother-
hood imagine for one moment what
their power could do If there were
an organization with a membership
Sup- 1 of three hundred millions whose pres-
Coast to the shores of the South Pole
It is the Catholic Church
And the question I would ask you
is: How do we use that power? Do
we make ourselves felt as we ought?
Where is our influence as a great
organization? I do not meun the re-
ligious influence of the Church that
is divine I do not speak of the spir-
itual force of the representative
of Christ upon earth I do not refer
to the many enterprises carried on by
the Church us such but what I do
mean is this: Where apart from our
religion do we show our influence as
a great society und organization ?
Look here in our own country where I
how few Cutholics there are In the of religious life Catholics do not stick j tion of the church of Notre Dame at
President’s Cabinet not one is ap- j together as they should They do not' Nieuport which has been entirely re-
pointed look into the halls of Con- help one another in business as they built
gress and the Senute Chamber at should they do not cast their votes
Washington where men are assent
bled from every State in the Union
to represent their people and see how
few of them are Catholics! Come
down the line and see the small list
of Catholics in any public office worth
mentioning It is a shame and we
should hung our heads because the
fault lies with ourselves We are to
blame!
In this country there is a well-
known secret society Its members
are found in every city They are
united and they pledge themselves
ever to give aid and assistance to a
fellow member They have not the
membership of the Catholic Church
They have not the bond of unity that
Catholics have and yet see how they
have succeeded in controlling the of-
fices and places of high stunding Say
what you will about this body of men
they give many a splendid example
of loyalty to their society und a com-
mendabl espirit of co-operation to all
their members They hold the high-
est positions in the country They
assist cne another in business and as
u result they are successful
Again we allow ourselves to be
taunted by another secret society

British Catholics
To Celebrate 100th
Year of Emancipation
(By NCWC News Service)
LONDON Sept 17— In 1929 the
Catholics of Great Britain will cele-
brate the 100th anniversary of the
passing of the Catholic Emancipation
Act an act of the British Parliament
which restored to the Catholics those
civil liberties of which they had been
deprived for more than three centur-
ies That year ought to mark an im-
portant epoch in the history of the
Catholic Church in the country for
if eveerything goes as at present and
the Catholics make their normal prog-
ress they will in all probability equal
the Anglicans in numbers if not act-
ually surpassing them in this respect
There are certain institutions in
England that came in with the Prot-
estant ruler William of Orange that
were designed to buttress up the dom-
inant Protestantism and to keep the
Catholics in the insigmficant minority I
hat they were The prospects are now
that while the Catholics cannot hopei

whose members go about in the dark-
ness of night under the protection of
hood and mask killing priests and J
setting fire to our churches and flog-
ging innocent citizens And there are
other bodies of men and women who
rise up against us in business and ini
politics and actually discriminate
against us because we are Catholics !
Why do we not declare ourselves?
Why are we outdone in politics and
why have we not placed our people in
public office?

to outnumber the united body of Pro-
testantism they will at least rival if
not actually outnumber the adherents
of the State Church
Among these Protestant institu-
tions is the obligation that the Sov-
ereign must profess the religion of
the State Church It is a curious po-
sition for while in England the ruler
must profess the religion of the
Church of England in Scotland of
which also he is Sovereign he must
profess the religion of the Establish-
ed Presbyterian Church
So that whether the Sovereign is
obliged to be an Anglican or merely a
member of any of the Protestant sects
the fact remains that neither the
Sovereign nor the Prince of Wales
nor the Lord Chancellor of England
can profess the Catholic religion
since to do so would render them in-
capable of holding office In addition
to this the Sovereign at the corona-
tion has to take an oath that is vir-
tually directed against the Catholic
Church Formerly this oath was the
most wanton offense against the con-
science of Catholics which it was in-
tended to be but it has been modified
an dthough George V took the oath
to maintain Protestantism Tie did so
in term8 considerably less offensive
t ohis Catholic subjects than the oath
taken by all his predecessors since
