The Progress says these other
towns were put iu our counly
oecause that is where they want
id to he placed. Isn't that nice?
No dissatisfaction in Indian Ter-
ritory over the counties in which
tbo towns are placed! Progress
says Talala would have been
placed in Nuwaia county if pol
tics played a part. Did it mean
to tell us that the work Talala
did to get iu Nowata couuty was
just a joke? Did M r. Rogers and
thq Nowata delegate have ade
uate on the floor in "You take
Talala, my dear Gaston" style?
Isn't it a fact Talala tried to go
north and wasn't allowed to?
In another column wo print
clippings from the Collinsville
Times and Skiatook Sentinel,
also other papers in t"his district,
showing how pleased these towns
were over the beautifully ar-
ranged map, which so much re
sembles a spider web
The Messenger does not want
to leave the impression that it is
kicking over the siz-j of our new
county. It suits us all right and
we would have no kick if a few
more democratic townships had
been taken in. The outlying
townships are settling up much
slower than the towns, and are
safely democratic for a time.
Claremore a few years ago con-
tained practically all democrats.
At the election this fall the re
publicans were as plentiful as
democrats The new people corn-
in",' to the town are about three
republicans to one democrat and
the only hope for that party to
hold control is 10 make the coun
try as strong a.s possible to offset
tbe^'uture town vote.
The Progress would haVe one
think that the poliiical strength
of the country rests on the past
election. That is over and the
change of condition's are to be
considered for future elections
The democrats'hope is to in some
way offset ihe large republican
vole which is coming in now and
in the next few years from the
north and east, There is but
little likeliho jd of a heavy immi-
gration from the southern slates
where land is cheap, but from
the nortierri slates where land
is high, and politics republican,
the homeseekers will come by
hundreds seeking the new coun
try.
The different lodges could do
a little more toward welcoming
strangers lo town.
It taken strangers in Clare
more to talk hard for Clare,
more. After a mm is here for
a day, he says as many good
things for the town us un old
citizen,
Claremore can't do too much
to hurry up express delivery,
and also an up-town olllce Ti o
express, freight and pu sentfer
business all In the same huildinu
Is very inconvenient,
We would like to speak a word
f >r Claremore along a new line.
A town like this should have and
support a company of national
iruard and see no reason why an
at tom pt should not be made for
one.

NOT MANY ENLISTING.
For nearly a year the govern
ment has maintained here an
enlisting office for recurits
for the army and navy. For
first few mouths there were
many applicants for enlistment
but this dwindled down, during
the past mouth there has been
just one man enlisted and he
wanted to get into the regular
army. It is understood that
the same thing has taken place
at the other recruiting offices
in the new slate, and whereas a
year ago Iudian Territory and
Oklahoma were leading the num
ber of men enlisted, the recruit
ing offices are doing nothing
now. A few days since a gener-
al order came from the recruit-
ing officer to use every means
iu his power to get more lo en-
list. It is understood that this
order went to other recruiting
offices iu the state also. In-
dian Territory and Oklohoma
furnished a large per cent of
the Rough Riders in the Span
ish American war and hundreds
of men for other regiments,
but. with the coming of state-
hood and era of unprecedented
prosperity the charm of the
army life s^ems to have been lost
in the multitude of oppnrtuni
ties to acquire wealth in the
new state.—New State Tribune.

A revival meeting will begin here
next Sunday at 11 o'clock. The meet-
ing will be conducted by Rev. A. M.
Miller and A. M. Drannon, of Clare-
more.
E W. Morris was in Topic olllce
the latter part of last week and re-
ported the amount of grain and corn
raised by him this year on the two
places farmed by him, to amount to
a fraction over 11,000 bushels. This
is a good showing for a comparative-
ly new farming country, but then
Mr. Morris farmed the land, not with
a lick and promise but in true farmer
like manner.
With this Issuo of the Topic theman-
agement will have Usui here four
years, and In that time have witness-
ed vast improvement in the way
of buildings, such as hand some dwell-
ings, a line two story brick school

of them occupied and the others soon
will be. siiuuld we continue to im-
prove in this line, and we see 110 reas-

made one of the best little cities 011

by the reception given "The Wizard

The following letter has been.receiv-
edfrom a man in Kansas, who is well
to do and contemplates locating in
Claremore in the spring for the pur-
pose of investing money. It is some-
what timely, and might interest some
of readers.
Caney, Kas., Dec. 30.
Dear Sir:—I notice 'by to-day's pip-
er that it is proposed to call the
county in which Claremore Is located
Coowerscoowee! I would like to
know why. Is it to embalm some
tradition or to perpetuate the name
of somo eminnt Indian chief or
medicine man?
But whatever the intention is and
with all due deference to the sacred
and hallowed memories that may
cling around that euphoneous but
lmghty pollysy liable and with due re-
gards to its etoinology and|nistory I
wish you people would ch iuge it to
some short significant name. We
•spect to go there to live in Uie
spring and would like to have the
county in which we live called by a
shorter name. Claremore is a nice
name and sounds well. Let us liave
a nice name for the county. That
name is as long as the names of some
of the Russian generals only it is mora
euphoneous. I hope the people there
will try and have that name changed.
Claremore Is too line a town to be
located in a county with such a name.
Very truly yours,
