A Local Newspaper Unfettered and Unchained
Unity at Washington
An Associated Press dispatch
from St Augustine informs' us
that Mr "Harding’s inaugural ad-
dress will be in part “a plea that
the Ration forget the animosities
and partisanship of the after-war
period and put its shoulder to
the -wheel of reconstruction”
This we are told will be the
krynote of his address and what-
ever the politicians may think
about it we know of nothing that
would make a pleasanter sound
to the people of this country
We wish it were possible to cal-
culate how many hundreds of
millions party animosities had
cost the people of the United
States since that memorable 11th
day of November 1918 Up to
that time throughout the war or
at least up to the publication of
President Wilson’s appea!fora
Democratic Congress' a few
weeks before that date we were
a people united as never before
But that fatal letter had broken
the harmony and when the mili-
tary war ended immediately tff-
ter the election it opened a po-
litical war that- prevented any ef-
fective co-operation in the gov-
ernment towards the essential
labor of Reconstruction which
should have been under consid-
eration long before Two years
have passed since then years in
which we should have been ear-
nestly at the task of restoration
oLour own resources and activi-
ties andf greater ultimate im-
portance the firm establishment
of the place we bad attained in
the friendship of the world but
what has been accomplished?
Toward our domestic rehabilita
tion andadvancement the trans-
portation and tne merchant ma-
rine acts toward the promotion
of international friendship and
respect nothing On the con-
trary our standing in the the
'world today is not even what it
was in 1914 And we think it
not an exaggeration to say that
this ft largely due to party an-
tagonisms We do not cast blame upon
one party more than upon anoth-
er The Republicans have re-
fused to support Democratic ef-
forts and have bitterly opposed

Our showing this season is
by far the largest and prettiest
selections we have ever shown
The styles this seasoh are the
smartest ever shown and the
prices are very much lower than
some things The Democrats
took the same position refusing
to make compromises in order to
secure Republican aid - With a
divided government a house div-
ided against itself we have for
two years done no better than to
mark time while the months
which should have been filled
with progress have passed emp-
tily by After the 4th of larch
the'goVernment will - be in the
full control of a single party
The Capitol will be no longer
politically arrayed against the
White House and the White
House against the Capitol But
will that mean a restoration of
harmony and unity? Not neces-
sarily There is one man in the
White House there are over 500
in the Congress and there are
some among that 500 some in
particular in the Senate who
seem not yet disposed to - wipe
the froth from their mouths anc
lay aside their weapons There
are Democrats there who are
likely to oppose anything how-
ever good that is proposed by
the Republicans This however
is always the case whichever
party is in control It is not in
these the danger lies but in the
Republicans who are more con-
cerned in-serving individual am
bitions or spites than the welfare
of the country or even of the
Republican party These men
and we do 'not need to name
them are the menaces to that
unity and accord which Mr
Harding recognizes as set essen-
tial to our progress and for
which he proposes to appeal iji
his inaugural address
'The people we can say with-
out hesitation desire just such a
getting together of the " recon-
structing elements o f govern
ment They want to see some-
thing done something with the
linear masure of a forward move
ment toward the wise solution
of our domestic difficulties and
of the problem of our foreign re-
lations and they are ready to
stand by and support such a
movement if there is that accord
at the head of the column that

will make them sure it is advanc-
ing and knows where it is going
There will be no' trouble about
unity among -the people if there
is unity with progress in Wash-
ington We suspect that Mr
Harding’s Words on this line will
be directed not so much to the
people of the United States as to
the inhabitants of that splendid
edifice form whose classic front
h e will deliver h i s address
There is where the animosities
and partisanship do most prevail
and where there is must need of
accordant service for the public
good if we are to stop going
round in a circle while the wind
blows and the house rocks and
start upon a forward course of
reconstruction We have no
fears as to Mr Harding’s intents
and desires Assuredly he means
well The quality of his judg-
ment is yet to be proven in the
actual operation Of that great
office which he will soon hold
but he has already shown that
he will seek counsel on great
questions and endeavor lo make
his decisions accord with wisdom
What we do fear is the group of
rreconcilable and as yet irre-
pressible Republican Senators
who blow their trumpets perpet-
ually about the walls of our Jer-
icho caring little about falling
walls but eager for auditors and
applause— St LouisGlobe-Demo-crat
