Year of Christ’ Birth
History tells us that for 500 years
the Christians had no calendar of their
own but reckoned the yeurs according
to the customs of the natious to which
they belonged The Ilomnn Christians
used the “Anna Urbls Condltlue” or
year of the founding of Rome to count
from others counted from the reign
of Diocletian calling it "the Era of the
Martyrs V and still others used the
calendar of the Copts of Egypt In the
sixth century Denis the Little a Greek
monk living in Rome made u calendar
counting from the Iucnrnntlon the
date of which he fixed at 753 A U C
So we commonly sny that Rome was
founded in 753 B C At the beginning
of the eighth century the venerable
Rede pointed out that tills was'an bis
torical blunder But no general no
tlce was taken of his criticism and the
error has continued to this day His-
toric facts have enabled modern schol-
ars to determine without much pos-
sibility of doubt the exnct year of the
birth of Jesus and to pluce it at what
we call 5 B C

COMBINATION GATE IS HANDY
Barrier of Original Design la Con-
venient and Tlm-8avlng-
Arranged for Hogs
The cut herewith shows a combina-
tion gate of my own design that I
think-is quite handy convenient and
time saving It is located between the
barnyard proper and the hog yards It
is necessary to have a large sliding
gate between the yards In order to
pass from one yard to the other with
team and wagon or manure spreader
writes J A Saul of Hancock county
Ohio In Ohio Farmer Also I wanted
a place for the hogs to pass through
which I could open or close at will
Since there was only room for the
Combination Gate
large gate and not wishing to weaken
It by cutting a hog door In it I devised
this plan
It is easily constructed Simply set
two posts three feet apart and bolt
two 2 by 6 Inch cross-pieces to them
one two feet or more if you
wish above the one on the ground
These roust be notched as shown to
hold the gate where wanted When
the gate is In the notch D the hog
door is open In notch E hog door Is
shut and when In notch F door Is
partly open to allow only smaller hogs
to pass through 0 I
To prevent “smart” old hogs from j
raising gate from one notch to an-j
other bolt strap iron H to top board an
inch or so in front of cross pieces on
which gate is hung This iron must be
bent In hook shape end -be Just long
enough so that the hook end will slip
In under the top cross-piece when gate
is dropped In any of the notches The
posts must be set at an angle to the
large gate so same can be opened wide
enough to be useful -
PRUNE TREES DURING WINTER
Any 8urplue Time May Be Profitably
Utilized in Orchard — Remove
All Dead Wood
’ Any surplus time at this season of
the year may be profitably utilized
In pruning the trees about the place
according to the horticultural depart-
ment of the college of agriculture
The dead wood and crowded branches
of course must be removed Smooth
clean wounds should be made and
then smeared over with lead paint
Spongy tissue from old cavities should
be cut away The cavities should then
be washed with creosote and filled with
cement This latter operation hnd best
be undertaken on one of the warm days
at this time of the year — Neb Col-
lege of Agriculture
REPAIR MACHINES IN WINTER
Farmers Should Give Careful Atten-
' tion to Toole and Implements
' for Next Season -
During the winter months fanners
should give careful attention to the
work of repairing all machines which
will be used next season Also orders
for repnlr parts and new tnnchlnes
should be placed as soon as possible
This will acquaint manufacturers nnd
their agents with the demand in differ-
ent sections and enable them to make
the beat DoaRible distribution At the
same time it will eliminate expensive
delays In transportation at the busy
season
WHEN SOIL IS UNHEALTHFUL

With Dropping That Hens Are
i Likely to Contract Disease
Gronnd may -get so saturated with
the droppings that it becomes un-
henlthful If food la thrown on the
ground the flock is likely to contract
diseases common to filth Where such
a condition exists It Is best to remove
a couple of Inches of soil and fill in
with clean sand or coarse gravel

protected from rabbits and aunscnld?

MAINTENANCE OF EARTH ROAD
8ame Principles of Drainage Apply te
Clay Road— Keep Pipe Line and
Ditches Open
The same principles of drainage as
apply to the earth roads should apply
to the sand-clay roads The sand-clay
roads are usually located by an engi-
neer before they are built and in this
event they are constructed on a grade
and with proper provisions for drain-
age it remains for the maintenance
force to aee that the pipe lines and
ditches are kept open The surface of
the snnd-clny road requires continual
attention and It should be dragged af-
ter every rain or wet spell it should
not be allowed to deteriorate and blow
away
As this class of roads is more expen-
sive than the earth roads are so Is
their maintenance more expensive but
on the otber hand the service tjint
they give Is much more satisfactory
thnn that of the earth roads The
communities through which they run
are usually more enlightened and pro-
gressive thnn those on the earth roads
and therefore are more ahle and will-
ing to bear the maintenance cost

Manure Adda Plant Food and Organic
- Matter - to Soil— Matter la of
Great Importance
Estimates of the returns of crops
fed on the farm by way of manure
are worked out on the basis of the
tonnage fed and they vary grentiy
due to the methods of handling 'and
preserving the manures - It has been
shown by careful preservation of the
manure that GO tons of ensilage fed
can return ns much as 50 pounds of
nitrogen 25 to 30 pounds of phosphor-'
Ic odd and 40 to 45 pounds of potash
Thta shows an Inducement to take
good care of manure
CLEANING GRAIN OF BENEFIT
Farmer Could Not Only Demand Top
Prices but Would Also Obtain
Screenings for Feed
Government Investigators declare
thnt the producer of high-quality grain
often receives less thnn it Is worth in
order thnt the buyer may pay an equnl
price to tiie grower of grain of inferior
quality If the fanner would clean his
grain he could not only demand top
prices but would thereby obtain
screenings worth $10 to $25 a ton for
feed The specialists believe that
fanners who deliver grain of Inferior
quality should not expect to' receive a
price equul to that pnltj for high-qnui-Ity
grain
RATION FOR EGG PRODUCTION
Hens in Full Laying Require Rations
Which Have Greater Relative -Content
of Protein
Poultry rations at once divide them-
selves -'into two different classes:
Those for the fowl and those for egg
production Too many farmers are
feeding for the hen’s upkeep forget-
ting thnt they must also-feed for eggs
Hens In full laying require rations
which have a greater relative content
of protein and ash as against those
fed merely for maintenance
