There was nothing to do but take the
brush Tha topa of the tall trees
loomed up In menacing manner be-
neath us In about two minutes we
struck the top of the forest To ease
the fall I threw out a bag of ballast
and we Immediately began again As
we started up I used the ripping panel
as a last resort and all the gas es-
caped with a rush We were carried
at terrific apeed over the tree tops
for a hundred feet or so then the bal-
loon caught in the branches Wa were
dumbfounded as we looked over the
edge of tbe basket and taw the trees
were about 80 feet talL The basket
crashed down through the branches
but stuck about 20 feet above the
ground There wa were trapped In
mid-air We held fast to tha ropes
fearing that another gust of wind
would seize the bag and whirl up into
new danger"
The two men escaped by sliding
down a guy rope As the rubber bag
dropped lower in the branches the
men were able to pull down the
basket and make a bed In it where
they spent the night
