The European war is the first
in which there has been fighting
on land and sea in the air and
beneath the water Now that
the nations have reached the
acme of ability to slay their ene-
mies it might be wise and pru-
dent for them to use their talents
in the cultivation of peace and
goodwill at home and abroad-
When a diplomatic note begins
with honeyed phrases you may
depend upon’t ’tis only the sugar-
coating of a do?e of unpalatable
fact to be administered to the re-
cipient at the end of the chapter
The other day a wealthy Kan-
sas City (Mo ) man to avoid
running over a woman on a coun-
try road swerved hi3 car and
ran down a 13 foot embankment
losing his own life Chivalry
has not altogether vanished from
the earth Let the occasion arise

Some days ago in New York a
man laughed so heartily at a joke
that he dislocated his jaw An
ambulance wa3 called which in
hurrying to the hospital bounced
over a rut giving the man such
a hard jolt that it reset his jaw
Moral:’ It is better to be jolted
on a rough road than to dislocate
your jaw by laughing at a joke

The Kickapoo Indians of Kan
sas have no cus3 words in their
language It is said that even
the sign language of the Indians
which is the universal means of
communication among all the
tribes has no profanity How-
ever this does not tignify that
they- never swear for most cl
the Indians have’ acquired the
English language and therefore
havi a convenient outlet for their
perturbed feelings by using cuss
words if so inclined
In Kansas a couple of farmers
have attached a light road drag
to the rear axle of their farm
wagons and as they drite over
the roads to and from work they
also drag the roads They have I
male a marked improvement of i
their road3 over those of adjoin
ing sections that do not receive !
the same treatment Oklahoma
farmers might profit by adopting
tae same method of road improvement

Why man is it fame veu'ie
seeking? Have you ro desire to
bent fit your neighbor? If you
succeed in pleasing the people ir-
your own community don’t wor-
ry but be satisfied There are
few original ideas: it is the lan-
guage in which a thought is con
veyed that attracts attention or
edifies And from our unbiased
viewpoint it ought to be credit
enough when another adopts
your mode of expression as his
own for thereby he confesses
that it is just as good if not a
little better than he could do
himself Let a compliment suf-
fice Another point: He that
uses the scissors instead of the
pen has more time to smoke and
read and meditate
The strike of the Chicago car-
penters lias ended by a compro-
mise and they have returned to
work -like wise S' me 200000 other
workers who lost their jobs tem-
porarily by reason of the strike
The strikers gained an increase
of cents per hour but had ti
yield on seme points It will
take them a long time to make
up at hJ cents a day (8 hour
work) what they lost in wago
($3£) per uay) during noar'y
j three months of idleness St: i k c t

Strikes except perhaps in rare

It is claimed that $60000 in
coin was buried near Bedford
Iowa in 1868 And now some
people are looking the matter
up This thing of searching for
hid treasure is a slow and uncer-
tain way of acquiring wealth
The hiding place of Captain
Kidd's strong box has never yet
lieen discovered though in other
days it was thought vast wealth
was hidden by that jolly rover of
the seas somewhere and search
was made but nothing developed
The Burestwayof getting wealth
out of the ground is by cultivat-
ing corn and cotton wheat and
oats etc Also here in Oklaho-
ma many have done well by pros-
pecting for oil here and there

fiction
