DID OKLAHOMA HELP?
The Oklahoma Legislature has !
driven right ahead on their good road
hill It seems as though the opposi-
tion of the Oklahoman helped instead
of hindered Some people seem to
fLtir that in the expenditure of Fifty
millions of dollars there is apt to he
some graft YYhile we are aware that
all of the grafters are not dead and
that there arc those who would like
to get their hands on a part of this
fund common souse and reason
teaches (hat Covernor Robertson and
the Senate arc not going to put men
in charge of the road project who
have not a reputation for honesty and
ability The success of this road
scheme would make Governor Boh-
ertson the most popular citizen in
the state while its failure and the
evidence of graft ami mismanagement
would have the opposite effect— he
would he the most unpopular man in
the state and would forever amt
eternally lie ruined politically The
'Governor has gumption enough to
:see this He is going to put men in
charge of this money who will deal
on the square with t lie administra-
tion and the people The Senate
which body must approve the ap-
pointment of the road commission
will also sec to it that these men aic
on the square and have plenty of
ability
1 We have not yet lost confidence in-
our fcllbw-man There are oodles of
honest tnen In Oklahoma Such mci
we believe will be designated to spend
(lie fifty- million Some times the fel-
low who is always expecting graft
is himself a grafter
FROM THE CAPITOL
Up to hjs time the house has pass-
ed approximately 150 bills the senate
100 And they are all good sensible
enactments There has been less
radical legislation and more needful
laws enacted by this legislature than
hy any other legislature in the his-
tory of this state or in any other
state is the opinion of Robertson ad
ministration
There was a time during the short
period of Governor Robertson's ‘oc-
cupancy of the chair that his asso-
ciates and close friends worried about
Jim’s smile That was when the gov-
ernor's gnti-room was mobbed with
job-seckers well-wishers and hobby
riders any! the governor had to re-
ceive each one The Robertson smile
nearly took the count then according
to his office force But the smile has
come back The characteristic cher-
ry "hcllq there’’ is heard even thru
closed floors The governor who
calls plainly shows his pleasure The
whole atmosphere of the statehouse
has taken its cue from the governors
affability
fense were t sraraed that the case
would be called and were not pre-
pared to defenjl In 'fact it was
thought by the friends of the good
road proposition that the css 'had
not Jret taken form s the bill pro-
viding for ' the submission of
question had not yet been agreed up-
bn fn the house and senate and at the
time Judge Crump rpoke against it

JUDGE CRUMP AND GOOD ROADS

the campaign in Ltimcr County

t Whilfit is trpe that the Holdfiiville

District Court ' the feature of the
opening day was a broadside landed
Itr the solar plexus of the Administra-
tion good road scheme
In fact thefirSt case tried Monday
in the Latimer County Court room'
was Judge Crump vs Oktahoma Good
Road Bond Issue The Court prosc-
cated and was the judge The verdict
- was that it shoptd be -defeated and

det
that the Holdenville Jurist had made
up his mind that nothing yood can
come out of this administration cs
pccially projects which provide large
expenditures of money and he was
not timid in attempting to land
knock-out blows
It appears from his remarks that
Judge Crump went to Oklahoma City
recently to suggest reforms in matter
of fixing a minimum penalty for the
crime of murder The Judge says hr
advised a law that would provide
(hal if a man took another's life he
should serve a term of at least ten
years in the penitentiary regardless
of the circumstances in the case He
thinks such a law woutd pretty near
pul a stop to murdeY Judge Crump
say when he tried to talk to the com-
mittee about this matter they would
look out of the window and think of
nothing but voting a fifty million dol
lai bond issue on the state
The writer lacks a great deal of
being as well verspd in law as the
visiting Judge YVe would ordinari’
feci backward in taking issue with
him on matters that have to do with
criminal jurisprudence but it appears
to this very humble country editor
that (he suggested new law is even
more unreasonable than a sane man's
opposition to a good road project
YY'c do not wonder that a legislative
committee would look out of the win-
dow when a law like this is advocated
If we understood the Judge's propo-
sition a man would not be justified
in killing a horse thief as he saw him
jcadhis favorite horse out of the
Stable at midnight or pop-off a hold-
up mail before he got the drop or
killing a brute who insulted Ids wife
or daughter YVe would rather favor
a minimum ten year sentence for a
lawmaker who would vote for such
a bill
But back to the good road 'Subject
If the hill is submitted and it is as
good as we learn it is going to be
we arc 'going to support it Since
statehood there have been fifty mil-
lion dollars wasted on dirt roads in'
Oklahoma Thousands of dollars
have been spent in mpd holes or
wooden brndges and in draging Un-
til tlicie is sonic sort of intelligent
effort made to build a statewide sys-
tem of hard surface roads the old
wasteful system will continue and
more millions of dollars will go for
naught Under the pl-u proposed
these miaiiy miles of hard surluse
roads which 'will connect every coun-
ty scat will not cost the taxpayers
one penny except that said taxpay-
ers owns an automobile oif prop-
erties or pays ait income tax and he
would have to pay this tax regardless
of a bond issue Every penny of the
intcresl and principal will he liqui-
dated from these sources of revenue
—only the upkeep will he taxed
against the abbttting property The
project will give employment to
thousands of laborers and farmers
dining the next five to eight years
and Oklahoma will have the greatest
system of good roads in the United
States and it will not have cost a
single additional mill of taxes ex-
cept as above related
Latimer County is especially in-
terested in this good road project
Under the plan outlined in the House
Bill we will get about thirty miles
of hard surface road YVcre we to re
ceive our proportionate share of this
fund according to taxable values we
would get only about sixteen miles
This plan therefore provides that the
cities and wealthy oil counties in the
state will help Latimer County build
her hard surface roads i
YVe are tired of bum roads The
roads as we have had them in this
part of the state are nightmares We
want roads that will not break peo-
ple up paying a mud tax
Oklahoma has not- yet taken a
backward step To defeat a hard sur-
face road project would certainly be
taking such and we do not believe
the people will defeat It
YVe regret that it became necessary
to take issue with our friend Judge
Crump YVe have known him long
time and we like him but we do not
propose to'see 'him come down here
in the mountains close up to Arkan-
sas and advise our people to go
wrong We will stand for his' Court
decisions but not for his good road
advice

work and it won’t do itself" As you
the county were closed last fall on
account of the influenza Some few
were opened up but many are still
closed Spring is here the time when
we expect to get our best results
from schools in the rural districts So
let us make a united effort to aee that
the schools that were closed ars re-
opened and new ones established
where they are needed John Wesley
the great Apostle of Methodism said
to his men "when you can find ten
children organize a Sunday school
So We understand that ten children
not In Sunday school creates a de-
mand for a school In that community I
Robert Rakes said "crime can be
prevented how? train up a child in
the way he should go" The Sunday
school stands next to the home in
the work of training' the children

May I make a special appeal to the

Sunday schools workers of tbit coun-
ty to see 'that a Bible' school it'cs-
tabliihed' in every community and
thereby place h Bible education with
in reach of every child I feel sure
that the ministers of the gospel will
be glad to cooperate with you In
every way possible So let - us get
busy as April begins a new quarter
After we have organised schools in
every district then have a township
rally catling all of the schools to-
gether for an all-day service where
the different phases of the Sunday
school work can be discussed by-
ministers and experienceed Sunday
As a missionary of the American
