To The Democratic
Voters of Oklahoma
At this time the whole ener-
gies of our people are devoted
to the problem of winning the
war Realizing this I have
not made a state wide cam-
paign I have confined my
campaign to the writing of let-
ters and to the personal work
of my friends
When 1 announced-as a can-
didate for renominaton to the
office of State Superintendent
of Public Instruction I stated
that I was running on my rec-
ord as a public official I now
repeat that statement I have
not uttered a word of criticism
against either of my opponents preferring to to run on my
own record rather than on the short comings of others On
the contrary the whole energies of my opponents have been
devoted to political mud slinging All their charges being so
basely false have fallen by their own weight Now in the-
closing days of the campaign they have combined Mr
'Hrilcs has withdrawn fronr the race and is attempting to de-
liver his suuport to George Wilson Their otident hope is
to deceive the people by the similiarity of names What re-
gard Mr liriles is to get as a result of this combination has
not been publically announced
Kvcry one is familiar with the progress made by the
schools of Oklahoma during my administration The school
system as it exists today speaks for itself The spirit of co-
operation and general satisfaction is attested by the fact that
ninety-five per cent tof the teachers arc openly supporting me
in this campaign If yon approve of my work as State Su-
perintendent I shall be very grateful for your support on
August 6th
Sincerely
R H WILSON

ART L WALKER
(Always a Democrat)
Candidate to succeed Himself
as
Corporation Commissioner
Mr Walker’s competency
and efficiency bear the attest
of three years service in the
office of the" State Corporation
Commission 'Of unquestion-
ed integrity and high purpose
in the prime of manhood Mr
Walker has won the admira-
tion and confidence of all men
who have transacted business
with him and hv official acts
have merited approval
No candidate'for public of-
fice has more extensive acqua-
intance among Oklahoma’s
public men than Mr Walker
and all of them gladly bear
witness to his qualifications
Among those who express
their unstinted faith in Mr
Walker’s ability and capacity
to continue as Corporation
Commissioner is Congressman

trict who has known Mr Wal-
ker intimately for many years

Mr Z L Boles
Ringling Oklahoma
My Dear Mr Boles: —
I aril in receipt-of your val-
ued favor of July 16th making
inquiry as to the qualifications
of Hon Art L Walker to
serve as Corporation Commis-
sioner and note carefully
what you say
While of course you realize
it would scarcely be proper
for me to take' sides in a con-
test of this kind yet your let-
ter makes frank inquiry and is
entitled to a candid reply as
to my opinion in the matter
- I have known Art Walker
for many years He is honest
and upright free and above
board and in all his dealings
With his knowledge of state
affairs and conditions in the
state coupled with the public
experience he has had I
should say that he is excep-
tionally well qualified to hold
a place as Corporation Com-
missioner This is as you are
aware a most important of-J
fice and for the welfare of the
state and our people it is es-
sential that a man "be selected
whose record is clean whose
character is unblemished and
who has had the experience
and possesses the knowledge
which eminently fits him to
serve I believe Art Walker
to be such a man As State
Oil & Gas Conservation officer
and in other public capaciti-
es in which he has served Art
Walker has been fair and
square with everyone and
should this high honor co(me to
him there is no question in my
mind but that he will make
good from A to Z and render
the state distinguished sendee
I appreciate your confiden-
ce in asking my opinion as to
Art -Walker’s -qualifications
and I have tried to answer you
as frankly and as candidly as
I know how
With great respect and
friendship I am
Very sincerely yours

POLITICS AND PETROLEUM
HAS COSDEN BOUGHT
THE STATE?
One piece of information comes
out of Oklahoma City somewhat
belated it is true but of very great
mportance to the newspapers and
their readers in the state of Ok-
’ahoma That is why Colonel Roy
Stafford for many years editor of
the Daily Oklahoman ceased to be
connected with that paper The
heat of this political campaign has
brought forth the reasons why the
veteran democratic editor could no
longer be affiliated with the news-
paper which haa passed into the
republican ownership It seems
Colonel Stafford who was a life-
long friend of W L Alexander had
refused to be a party to the con-
spiracy to the sale of the Democrat-
ic party of this state
It is an undisputed fact that the
Cosdcn-Marland oil interests have
long been seeking control of the po-
litical affairs of this state There is
nothing wrong with this ambition so
long as the men seeking such con-
trol desire to conduct state affairs
as they should be conducted It
seems that Colonel Stafford was not
disposed to view the situation from
the same angle of the majority of
the stockholders of that newspaper
and according to the Tuba Demo-
crat the Cosden-Marjand interests
purchased Mr Stafford’s stock It
is a well known fact that the Oklaho-
man at a late date expects with all
its force and power to support the
candidacy of J B A Robertson for
governor Thera Is nothing wrong
in the Daily Oklahoman giving this
support to Judge Robertson Some
’hoi's who live in the country how-
ever are disposed to question the
soundness of this action It seems
remarkable that a newspaper whclly
owned by republicans edited by a
republican and having republican
views on all questions should he-

OF LOVE COUNTY
W L ALEXANDER
become so much interested in the
candidacy of Judge Robertson It is
all the more remarkable when we
come to consider the fact that Judge
Robertson is an attorney of reconi
for the Standard Oil 'Company of
Indiana The fact that the Cj
den-Marland interests are financing
Judge Robertson’s campaign vid
their employees wrote the plank in
his platform calling for a read-
justment of the 3 per cent oil griss
production tax makes the matter of
thte Oklahoman’s support some v hat
remarkable
There may be nothing in the fa t
tthat the Cosden-Marlund interests
which are also charged with being
interested in the Oklahoman an fi-
nancing the Judge in his gubern i-
torial candidacy But the fact that
the Oklahoman is becoming so warm
in its support of the Judge leads
the countrymen to view as the old-i
fashioned politician would say with!
alarm the present interesting situa-1
tion
Democrats of this state regard ’
the present gubernatorial campaign 1
as the most important in our history
The isue is plainly that of whether
oil gross production tax shall be re-
duced or repealed Mr Alexander
in opposing a re-opening of the ques-1
tion or reduction of the tax has
brought forth opposition of the com-
bined interests of Standard Oil and
the Cosden-Marland people It is
only natural that the Daily Oklaho- j
man linked as it is with the oil in-1
terests shold take the side of the
Judge It should be likewise natur-
al for the average citizen of this state
to take the opposite side
The fact that William II Murray
also a candidate for governor on
July 20th 1918 issued a statement
declaring that the Alexander po-
sition is right is significant and
shows plainly that the efforts of the
oil people to secure a reduction or
repeal of the tax is wrong unjust
and should be defeated It is like-
wise true that if the people in op-
position to this attempt to evade tax-
ation scatter their voting strength
that the Robertson campaign may
be successful Alexander has forced
this issue He has made it plain to
the people He has conducted his
campaign in every county in this
state He has won the approval of
all fair-minded people He is today
