Weak 8pot In His Defense
A religious worker was visiting a
southern penitentiary when one pris-
oner in some way took his fancy This
prisoner was a negro who evinced a
religious fervor as deep as it was
gratifying to the caller
“Of what were you accused?" the
prisoner was asked
“Dey says I took a watch" an-
swered the negro "1 made a good
fight I had a dandy lawyer and he
done prove an alibi wlf ten witnesses
Den my lawyer he shore made a
strong speech to de Jury But It wa’n’t
no use sah! I get ten years”
T don't see why you were not ac-
quitted” said the religious worker
“Well sah" explained the prisoner
“dere waB shore one weak spot ’bout

‘ 'A Pause In Devotion “ !’ ’
"Mabel” called her father outside
her bedroom door There was no an-
swer so he called again Still no re-
ply He pushed open the door which
was not completely shut and reach-
ing for the button turned on the lights
Then he saw Mabel She was kneel-
ing at the side of her bed tn her night-
gown In the attitude of prayer — the
attitude that Is as tq kneeling But
she had raised her head at the Inter-
ruption and paused in her devotions
to blaze at him with a face flushed
with impatience
“Gee whiz daddy! Can’t a woman
say her prayers?”
Then she bowed her head again
plouBly and daddy properly rebuked
slipped noiselessly away
Norman Okla— Eight automobiles
carrying 75 men said to be chauffeurs
and friends of the murdered driver
Artie Rose arrived at Norman at
3:45 Wednesday morning drove to
the county jail and demanded of the
Cleveland county sheriff Ike Sales
the body of the confessed murderer
of Rose eighteen-year old Leon Pries
The threatening attitude of the in-
vaders there with the manifest' inten-
tion of putting lynch law into effect to'
atone for the murder of their com-
rade was met with entire calmness
by the sheriff who was dressed and
awaiting the visitors
“You’re too late -boys a couple of
hours too late the man you want is
not here”
Prom the gang alighted from the
cars and gathered around the sheriff
tbere came a growl of mingled doubt
as to thq truth of the statement
The sheriff allowed a" thorough
search of all jail premises 'basement'1
solitary cells and through the corri-
dors but the prisoner was gone A
search of the court house followed
with the same results The prisoner
had been spirited away before the
mob arrived
