PRESERVATION OF GOOD SILAGE DEPENDS
LARGELY UPON PACKING TO EXCLUDE AIR
J iljl 'ft1
SAVING ALL OF CORN
(Prepared by the United States depart -ment
of Agriculture)
Cut corn for silage when the kernels
have passed the milk stage and are be-
ginning to dent At this period the
greatest amount of food material can
be obtained and the best quality of
silage made
The cutter should be adjusted to cut
the corn In short lengths with three-
fourths of an inch as the maximum
length In general the finer the fod-
der is cut the more easily and more
compactly It can be packed and in
consequence the better the quality of
the silage
Thorough Packing Necessary
- Too much stress cannot be laid upon
the necessity of thoroughly packing
the fodder in the silo so as to exclude
the air as much ns possible It ia
upon this one thing that the keeping
of silage largely depends A device
consisting of a jointed pipe or some
variation of It attached to the top
of the blower pipe Is at present In
use for distributing the cut corn fod-
der In the silo By the use of this
distributor it Is possible for one man
to scatter the cut corn evenly and at
the same time to tramp 1L Without
the use of this device It Is necessary
to have at least one extra man In the
silo to fork the material over so that
It is evenly packed Besides the sav-
ing of one man’s labor the distributor
SILAGE FOR DAIRY ANIMALS
Almost Ideal Substitute for Natural
8ummr 8toek Feed Especially
In Winter
(Prepared by the United States Depart-
ment of Agriculture)
The demands cf the live stock for
the coming winter need to be antici-
pated In many parts of the country
The silo provides safe storage for for-
age that cannot be as effectively stored
In any other way In addition the
material stored in the silo is a more
acceptable feed especially for dairy
animals than the same feed prepared
In any other way Silage Is an almost
ideal substitute for the natural sum-
mer stock feeds and is especially val-
uable In the fall and winter because of
its succulence and consequent health-
fulness Advantages of Chickens
' Chickens are grent destroyers of In-
sets Including many Injurious forms
In yard pasture and orchard They
utilize also many grasses and weeds
and seeds from the snme that would
otherwise be of no use
Important War Factors
Two very important factors In war-
time farming are live stock and le-
gumes SUPPLY OF SEED CORN 2
e
(Prepared by the United States De- e
partment of Agriculture)
When corn ripens drop all otb- Z
er business and select an abund-
ant supply of seed corn from 2
the standing stalks The proc-
ess Is too Important to be con- 2
ducted Incidentally while husk-
Ing When selecting seed corn 2
give the process your entire at- 2
tentlon Get the very best that 2
la to be had and preservo It 2
well and your Increased yields m
will return you more profit than 2
any other work you can do on -2
your farm
Block Floors for Bams
Creosoted wood block floorings are
among the effective modern Improve-
ments In snnltnry feed nud dulry
barns stables and hog houses
The need of this country Is not so
much more cows as It Is better cows
more properly fed and cared for
Agricultural
CROP BY SILO METHOD
does away with the nuisance of having
the loose material flying around thus
annoying the man in the silo and also
lessens the danger of being struck by
some foreign object that may have
passed through the blower
Add Water at Cutting Time
Oftentimes the corn fodder la so
dry when it Is cut that it Is necessary
to add water to make up for the de-
ficiency In moisture and provide for
the proper packing of the silo This
waYer Is most easily added to ' the
blower when the corn is being cut and
It Is also more thoroughly mixed with
the cut material In this way
For the top layer of the silo It Is
good prnctice to use heavy green stalks
from which the ears have been re-
moved This forms a heavy layer that
packs well and at the same time con-
tains a smaller amount of food mate-
rial so that the minimum loss Is sus-
tained If It spoils Various methods
and materials have been used for cov-
ering the top of the silage to prevent
Its spoiling None has given complete
satisfaction but the one mentioned
above has given as good results as
any especially when the top layer
was thoroughly wet down and packed
firmly by tramping The best prac-
tice Is - to commence feeding as soon
ns the silo Is filled In which case
there will be no loss of silage through
decay

Cows must have shade during the
heat of the day In summer
A good dairyman does not keep
cows he makes his cows keep him
Diarrhea Is the most common form
of calf troubles met with In hand-raised
calves ‘
All good dairy cows should be given
a name and every cow should know
her name
The pnlls used In feeding calves
must be kept strictly clean and used
for no other purpose
Milk and milk products should be
more widely used on all our farm
during this period of our nation’s food
shortage
Nearly all calf disorders are caused
either directly or Indirectly by lack ol
cleanliness and clean conditions con-
stitute the best preventive of disease
In the calf herd
Cream spoils when It gets warm
Market or ship cream three times a
week In hot weather and twice a week
In winter
Much skim milk which formerly
went to the feeding of calves pigs and
chickens must now be utilized for hu-
man food
Constant vigilance la the price of
healthy calves and the feeder must al-
ways be on the lookout for conditions
of aconrlng
' Where one has a number of cows
and considerable dairy products ta
market some kind of refrigeration will
he Indispensable'
It Is not reasonable to expect profit-
able returns from cows In warm weath-
er when they must stand In the hot sun
and fight files all day
The most critical periods In the life
of the young calf are at the uge of
four to six weeks when the feed Is
changed from whole to skim milk nnd
six to ten weeks when the calf la be-
ginning to eat grain and buy

MUST GIVE ROADS ATTENTION
Taxpayers Will Face Huge Road Bills
After War Is Over if This
la Not Done
Road maintenance must go on un-
interruptedly or the taxpayers of the
country will have to pay aa enormous
bill for the restoration of the high-
ways after the war says an editorial
in a recent Issne of Good Roads
Something like a quarter of a cen-
tury ago systematic' Intelligent road
improvement was commenced by a
few of the states In the northeastern
part of the country Today there Is a
highway department In practically ev-
ery state and in most of the states the
department is one of the' major divi-
sions of the government
During this era of road Improve-
ment the annual expenditure through- (
out the nation has grown from an In-
Road Sadly In Need of Repair
significant sum to a total well over a
quarter of a billion dollars
To date probably not more than
12 per cent of the country’s road
mileage has been surfaced Consider-
ed merely as a percentage this
showing Is not encouraging but when
It Is remembered that this one-eighth
means an actual mileage of something
over 800000 the magnitude of the
work accomplished Is better appre-
ciated Another fact that must be taken In-
to consideration Is that a large ma-
jority of the traffic of the country is
carried on a small proportion 'of the
total mileage nnd the greater part of
the work of Improvement has been
done on thesa more important high-
ways Some of the money spent for road
betterment has been wasted Some
of it has been used for permanent
work the amount involved represent-
ing an Investment that cannot be
lost A very large proportion of the
total expenditure has been used for
the construction of pavements and sur-
faces of varying durability and of dif-
ferent needs as to maintenance The
money they represent Is an Investment
also and one that can nnd will he lost
If the upkeep of the roads Is neglected
The country’s roads are worth bil-
lions of dollars even if nothing more
than their first cost Is taken Into ac-
count Their present value In terms
of service rendered Is literally Incal-
culable for without them every ac-
tivity would have to cease
The successful prosecution of the
war Is the chief business of the
American people today But that
doesn’t mean that every American
should be fighting or working In a
munition plant or on a farm There
are countless other activities that are
contributory to the three obvious es-
sentials and every one of them In
turn la absolutely dependent upon
transportation
The nation’s highway system Is the
foundation of Its whole vast and com-
plicated machinery of transportation
The public highways are Indispens-
able and they must be kept In con-
dition unless all the work we have
done Is to avail us nothing and the
work yet before us Is to be left un-
done Money must be spent and labor
and materials must be used — now
Properly Built Road Drag
With the drag properly built and Its
one well understood the maintenance
of earth and gravel roads becomes
simple and Inexpensive matter Care
should be taken to make the log
light that one man can lift It wttt
