Two CHRISTMAS DRIVES
Against Prussianism!
In 1776 seventy-seven American - patriots suffered the bitterness of
cold and hunger at Valley Forge— suffered willingly because it was for the
cause of Liberty The gloom of that dark winter was lighted by the brill-
iant genius of George Washington who crossed the ice-choked Delaware
and struck the Hessians in the midst of their Christmas feastings ‘
Again the Nation is at war for Liberty American soldiers are lying
at base hospitals suffering willingly for the cause You can strike anoth-
er Christmas blow at Prussian blood lust Your Christmas money can
help win the war
The Red Cross service flag should appear in every Grove window It
should appear in the window of every home in Delaware County The
Red Cross candle must burn behind every Red Cross service flag THESE
CANDLES SHALL LIGHT THE PATH OF VICTORY Shall our brave boys
in Khaki stumble to their death because YOUR window is DARK?
— The Red Cross -was first organised in '-Switzerland '1859 It -became -an
International organization in 1 886 when ' 39 Governments made a
treaty making neutral in time of war all hospitals their stores supplies
physicians and attendants In 1881 the United States joined ‘the Inter-
national Society under the leadership of Clara Barton In 1905 the pres-
ent American Red Cross was incorporated by Congress At the beginning
of the present war there was 200000 members and 200 Chapters One
month later there was 2500000 members and 1800 Chapters Nov 1
1917 there was 5000000 members and 3000 Chapters
Here is the plan which has been approved by the President of the Un-
ited States and the high officials of the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross is making a drive to make a Red Cross mem-
ber of every American citizen-between now and Christmas One 1 dollar '
gives you the privilege of membership in this noble work and with the
membership you are given a Red Cross service flag Put this flag in your
window because it is a BADGE OF HONOR It indicates that the red blood -of
American citizenship flows in your veins and that you would rather go
hungry than see one American fighter suffer for want of care
On Christmas Eve place a lighted candle behind your Red Cross ser
vice flag Groups of singers will go through the streets singing Red Cross
carols Be sure your candle is lighted because a note of sadness and dis-
appointment will come into the singers’ voices if they ' see ONE DARK
WINDOW
Belgium was unprepared and wears the shackles Serbia resisted and
died the death The foot of France is slipping on the ensanguined battle
soil The eyes of the world look to America and America MUST WIN
America will surely win no matter what befalls But it will win more
quickly if the American Red Cross is amply equipped to give needed as-
sistance The kaiser's hired snakes are watching and will report to him A dark-
ened window will give him greater pleasure than the sinking of ANOTHER
American destroyer because it will show him that America’s heart is not
in the war
America fought’ for the freedom of Americans in 1776 It fought for'
the freedom of American sailors in 1812 It fought for the freedom of the
black race in 1865 It fought' for the freedom of Cubans in 1898 Every
war America has ever waged has been for the holy cause of Freedom
-Today- it -fights- again-for freedom— for the freedom of ALL- races
ALL 'Nations ALL seas
Young men you know and love are fighting young men full of youth
and the love of life Family after family has given its bravest and best
Money is a paltry gift in comparison The least that any jof us can do is
give our sick and wounded heroes evgry comfort money can buy That’s
why Red Cross memberships are needed
Just before Lord Nelson met the enemy his signal flags whipped into
the breeze with the words “England expects every man to do his duty”
and the inspiration of that message won the battle of Trafalgar America
expects every Oklahoman to do his duty We do not doubt that you
will
You are not asked to give up your Christmas Merely set aside a -small
tithe of it Give this to the Red Cross so that your Christmas
dinner may be flavored with the knowledge that you are helping ease
the pain of some American mother’s son who freely feel that you and I
might never know the grip of Prussian shackles
One thing more you can do After you have taken your own membership
and secured your Red Cross service flag see that yourneighbor does not forget
Your neighbor might neglect it and would feel humiliated on Christmas Eve if
his was the ONLY DARK WINDOW ON THE STREET
