Another moment and he had
hurled down through the dense
mass of spectators clearing rank aft-

of madness leaped the balustrade Into
tbe orchestra below and rushed across
the space to the foot of the platform
“Pelagia 1 Sister I My sister I Have

“Brother!” '
And she sprang from the platform
Into his arms
A vision of a lofty window In Ath-
ens looking ont over fair olive yards
and gardens and the bright roofs and
basins of the Piraeus and the broad
blue sea with the purple peaks of
Aeglna beyond all — and a dark-eyed
boy with his arm around her neck
pointed laughing to the twinkling
masts In the far harbor and called her
sister— the dead soul woke within her
and with a wild cry she recoiled from
him In an agony of shame and cover-
ing ber face with both her hands sank
down among the blood-stained sands
A yell as all hell broke loose
rang along that vast circle
“Down with him! Away with him I
Crucify the slave 1 Give the barbarian
to the beasts 1 To the beasts with
him noble Prefect I”
The pleasure-loving people of Alex-
andria did not take kindly to the
youth 'Who ao rudely Interrupted the
delicious spectacle which their prefect
had staged for them “Aphrodite Ris-
ing From the Sea”
It was Alexandria In the fifth cen-
tury of our era The city founded by
king who dreamed not in empires
but In continents placed at tbe stra-
tegic point where It wbuld command
three of tbose great units bad
achieved a pre-eminence In beauty in
vice In learning In turbulence In the
cosmopolitan character of Its people
The three continents which Alexander
would unite Into one had poured Into
his city their best and their worst
end each strove desperately for su-
premacy Many a man In those days
must have thought that
East Is East and West Is West
And never the twain -shall wed
though meet they did in way as
tempestuous as the most violent Of
matrimony The empire nominally
Christian In the persons of the rulers
since the unsuccessful attempt of Ju-
lian to turn back the hands of time to
the faith of paganism found Itself In
constant clashes with the growing
power of the church Orestes the Im-
perial prefect and Cyril the militant
bishop vied with each other In dis-
patches to Constantinople each com-
plaining at the other’s usurpations
the army of legionaries and the vast
throngs of monks each entertained a
considerable respect for th® fighting
qualities of the other
The Jewl were 'In great numbers
and were not In the happiest position
between church and empire while the
descendants of Alexander’s Maceda
plans and Greeks from all quarters
of the eastern Mediterranean could
not forget that they bad once been tbe
masters of Egypt Constant conflict
la tbe streets between tbe partisans of
each aide laid a fitting scene for
Charles Kingsley’s religious philosoph-
ic historical melodrama
Cyril bishop and lateif saint la nom-
inally the leader of the battling
churchmen of tbe tale tbe great Aug-
ustine and the philosophic Syneslus
bishops both are minor personages of
tbe drama with many other passing
figures of the church but the leading
character from that side Is the humble
Philammon the young boy of the mon-
astery In the desert who makes his
way In the simplicity of his seal to
brave the world the flesh and the dev-
il where so many other monks of flfo
tlon have found that Interesting triad
keeping headquarters at Alexandria
The city was ruled by Orestes so far
aa any prefect could rule the unruly
cosmopolls a worldly and elusive per-
son who not satisfied with the trou-
bles already at hand would conspire
to erect hn empire of Africa out of
the difficulties of Borne and Constan-
tinople and to crown as hts empress
Hypatia Idealist mathematician neo-
Platonlst leader and teacher of what
remained of Greek philosophy as a liv-
ing force Under Hyprftla’s sway fell
the young Philammon by reason of
her beauty her power of speech' and
the Inherited appeal of philosophy to
one whose ancestry was Athenian An
appeal of another sort came to him
from Pelagia dancer and beauty dar-
ling of the city in general and of In-
dividuals In particular To the charm
of Hypatia yielded not only the world-
ly prefect and the simple monk but
the most Interesting figure of the
story Baphael-Aben-Esra descended
from the blood of Solomon rich lazy
and selfish to all appearance but the
personage In whose soul and mind
waa Barging most violently the strug-
gle and conflict which Is the keynote
of the book Should the traditions of
Jewry the lure of Greek philosophy
the charm of a pleasant If tumultuous
world or the power of Christianity
conquer In him! In hla apparently
easy going way through existence he
was measuring what every phase of
that seething cauldron had to offer aa
a solution for the problems which
human soul has to ponder for Its own
salvation It took him- long to decide
and it was only by the ministrations
of Augustine and Syneslus and the liv-
ing example of Victoria that he final-
ly found in Christianity the truly dem-
ocratic creed by which the world could
beet live
-Struggle and strife of soul or body
— Phllammon’s yearning to see more
of the world than the monastery in
the desert his enthrallment by the
charm of Hypatia’s beauty and her
learning Cyril’s struggles by militant
means toward a spiritual end Ores-
tes’ to win an empire Pelagia’s to
win love Raphael to find tbe truth
the conflict between old thought and
new and aa the climax the conflict
and the end In Hypatia’s case:
“Yes on Into the church Itself! Into
the cool dim shadow with Its fretted
pillars and towering domes and can-
dles and Incense and blazing altar
and great pictures looking from the
walls athwart the gorgeous gloom
And right in front above the altar
the colossal Christ watching unmoved
from off the wall bis right hand raised
to give a blessing— or a curse!
"On up the nave fresh shreds of
her dress strewing the holy pavement
up the Chancel steps themselves— up
to the altar — right underneath the
great still Christ and there even
those hell honnds paused
She shook herself free from her
tormentors and - springing back rose
for one moment to her full height
naked snow white against the dusky
mass around shame and Indignation
In those wide clear eyes but not a
stain of fear With one hand she
clasped her golden locks around her
tbe other long white am was
stretched upward toward the great
still Christ appealing — and who dare
aay In vain! — from man to God Her
lips were opened to speak but the
words that should have come from
them reached God’s ears alone - for In
an Instant they struck her down the
dark mass closed over her again — and
then wall on wall ear-plerdng rang
along the vaulted roofs and thrilled
like the trumpet of avenging angels
through Phllammon’s ears”
