Mother Battles to Win Child She
Gave to Another When an Infant
A dramatic scene was enacted Sat-
urday morning in tho Ottawa county
court when Mrs Iva Williams
charged that George McXarma who
took her infant child to raise five
years ago was a former convict and
that he was no fit person to rear her
Child
The hearing before Judge C R
Wortman was on a writ ot habeas
corpus instituted by Mrs Williams to
gain possession of her child The
testimony much of which was given
last Saturday brought out that live
years ago at Springfield Mo Mr
Williams appeared at the McXarma
home ami left her child then five
fweeks old She said she was a wid-
ow and could not rear tho child
Mr and Mrs McXarma took the
child and a few years later they
learned that the child was an ille-
gitimate one They had had custo-
dy of the child for five years and
Iliad learned to love it as their own
they testified
After Mrs Williams had charged
that McXarma was an ex-convict he
took the witness stand ami informed

JAMES S DAVENPORT
Judge Wortmun that the charge whs
true that many years ago he had
shot a man lie did not go into de-
tails about the case
Mrs Williams further charged
that Mrs McXarma had struck her
child and that she was cruel to the
child This was denied by the couple
who now have the custody of the
child
Mr and Mrs McXarma sprung a
little surprise on Mrs Williams when
they produced a worn piece of paper
which contained the following in ink
writing: “1 give away forever my
child to Mr and Mrs McXarnm” It
was signed by the mother
Mrs Williams declared that site
did not write the words and Judge
Wormian handed her a piece of pa-
per a pen and dictated just what was
on the paper The woman wrote the
words down and it is believed that
this little piece of worn paper will
have considerable bearing on who
will gain possession of the child
The case was continued until next
