GREAT WORK OF BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS
The rapid growth of boys ami girls clubs of the couu-
try and the interest shown in these organizations by the
members is one of the pleasing surprises of modem agri-
cultural life In Ottawa county these juvenile organiza-
tions have contributed greatly 1o the success of such enter-
prises as the county fair poultry shows etc The purpose
of these clubs is to promote enthusiasm among the youth of
farming communities and in the production of live stock
improving agriculture making better farmers and bright-
ening and softening life on tin farms
At the recent International Livestock Exposition in
Chicago more than 700 members of the boys and girls clubs
were guests of Thomas E Wilson & Company puckers i Mr
Wilson made the principal address to the young people' and
encouraged them to greater efforts lie stated that four
years ago there were but sixteen boys and girls at his din-
ner and that he then expressed the wish that the attend-
ance might eventually be increasetT fir fill the capacity of
the room which it had already done!'1 ITe Stressed the great
work that had been accomplished ami urged his guests to
redouble their efforts in making farm life not only profit-
able but so attractive as to keep the ranks of agriculturists
always filled
' " It is of recort that in many livestock expositions aud
county fairs it has been members of boys and girls dubs
who have ’successfully competed with their elders for
prizes and premiums A boy of fourteen from Indiana won
first prize recently in a national competition for the ten
best care of corn Many of his competitor: were veterans
and former prize w inners - The boys and girhp"rtnbs are
furnishing an incentive to tvke up farming as an occupa-
tion TKe members are given nil tlu make from’ their ef-
forts as producers They learn the fundamentals of agii-
culture early and are kept on their toes by reason of tl(e
keen competition to raise the fatest pig the largest pump-'
kin and the best seed corn and wheat The old question of
why hoys leave the farm may shortly be replaced bv stale-
incuts' of why boys don’t leave the farm
A LEGION CODE OF ETHICS
i The American Legion pot-t at Aftou has adopted a sct:)
of conduct rules for its club room The contents of 111080"
regulations shows that the ex-service men of that communi-
ty have a laudable attitude toward standards their organi-
zation should establish and an earnest desire to make it a
factor for good in their town Among these rules are the
following:
1 — There shall be no gambling in any form
2—— Profanity rough boistrous conduct or uny actions
unbecoming a gentleman shall uot b tolerated ‘
3 — Drunkenness or the possession of intoxicants will
uot be permitted in the club room
4— The club room shall be open all clay Sunday but all
athletics and music be prohibited during religious services
5 — The post commander shall 'appoint "a' committee of
three to act as club room committee
C — ItVshall be the duties of this committee to enforce
the club room rules
7 — Fines and penalties shall be imposed oil offenders
‘The nation is watching the former service pien both
for what they have done for their comilry and for wluit it
expects them to do in the future The posts in Miami
Afton and other towns of Ottawa county have adopted a
program for civic and moral betterment which makes the
organization a power in their respective communities
Other posts throughout the nation might do well to follow
their course and expend some of their bouiDlless energy on
local problems as well as national movements
WHAT IS IT?

This is not a line of type pied by the printer nor is it a
piece of poetry written in Hindostatiee If isn’t a prescrip-
tion either for home brew According to the Nation’s Bus-
iness it is merely the symbol you are to carry ground In
your head by way of knowing with whom you are dealing at
'Washington in regard to a small item in your income tax
return — say for 1916?
Unless something is done pretty soon to decentralize
administration of the income tax and bring it nearer home
to each taxpayer it will soon require a whole paragraph
of abbreviations to keep each of us straight in our fiscal re-
latioDs with oun government
