trast is almost as startling aa black

them possible for winter wear
The dress coat and the coat dress
are still important and the resem-
blance between them Is so great that
it Is difficult to distinguish one from
the other There are models designed
for coat purposes which look like
dresses again there are models dis-
tinctly dresses that have a most
coat-1 Ike appearance Both types agree
on hlgh-neck finishes and large
sleeves Practically all have long
sleeve and low waistlines - If they
are of the chemise type they must
blouse over a low-placed girdle of
some sort The day of permitting
this type of garment to hang In a
perfectly unbroken line has passed

BEST WAY TO CLEANSE SILKS
Pabrie Should Be Scrubbed With
Brush Instead of Rubbing Be-
tween Hands or on Board
The best way to clean pongee tns-
sah and novelty silks Is to wash them
in lukewarm water with good soap
Instead of rubbing between the
hands or on a board material of this
' sort should be scrubbed with a brush
and It will need rinsing In ut least
three waters
The greatest danger in hnndllng ma-
terial of this kind Is In using water
which Is too hot for very liot water
causes heat wrinkles which will not
disappear even under the Iron
Oil Stains — Stains made by machine
HOW GIRLS WEAR THEIR HAIR
Head Dresses That Simulate Bobbed
Cut Are Mors in Favor at
Present
Some of the head dresses among
the younger girls have taken a very
prominent place The coiffures are
simple enough — more often than not
being those that have been bobbed
and made comfortable In the last de-
gree But there Is Usually some sort
of extra adornment somewhere about
the head If it Is only a slightly-
jeweled comb that Is pushed In care-
lessfy to keep the front locks of a
Dutch cut In position
The head dresses that simulate a
bobbed cut are even more In the pub-
lic eye than are those which ore ac-
tually cut short Many are the' young
ladies who prefer ’ to keep the full
length of their locks ' Intact and
then to make them look as though
they had been clipped off On these
hair arrangements there Is usually Im-
posed some sort of decoration If it
is only a band of Jewels ' across the
forehead - -
When the contour of the face can
stand the strum the hair Is pulled
straight back from the forehead and
then further augmented with little
puffs of hair over the ears for It Is
this covering of the ears that still
seems to be necessary as a matter of
strict fashion and good sense No one
leaves a tip of the ear showing unless
ll Is Just enough from which to dangle
a length of earring conspicuously nec-
essary to the finish of the costume
with which it Is worn
Wreaths of silver und golden leaves
oil or any of the ordinary oils can be
removed with carbon tetrachloride
Oil Paints— A mixture of carbon tet-
rachloride and chloroform In equal
parts will remove oil paint marks
Nickel — Stains and marks on nickel
can be removed by robbing them with
a paste made of whttlng and ammonia
GARMENTS FOR SPORTS WEAR
Knitted Capea Are Among the Most
- Favored Numbers Swtatara
in Tuxsdo Models
"Knitted garments apparently are
being more and more strongly featured
In the new sports wear showings Knit-
ted capes large affairs which drape
Igto shawls are among the most fa-
vored numbers Silk and wool mix-
tures are popular usually in two-tone
mixtures about 60 per cent silk Suits
of the darker mixtures are bound
about with bright colored bands An
attractive dress Is shown with fur col-
lared cape to match' The cape may
be tied at the waistline giving smart
overskirt effect to the garment
Knitted capes large affairs which
drape into shawls are band made
Sweats rs are shown In Tuxedo models
or slipon with V or straight neck Silk
nqfnbers use bright colored stripings
while hand-knit wool ones are shown
with attached scarfs of many colors -Knicker
costumes continue to fea-
ture but are being more In- demand for
sports than for street wear Western
houses form the bulk of the order f
business It Is Said many calls coming -for
fhe separate knickers - " — I
An effective original design golf cos-1
tume of soft material In tan with j
brown overplald Is featured by a proin-
Inent sports houge The suit consists t
of sleeveless Jumper skirt rape and
knickers the latter Included If desired
The Bklrt fastens at the side and may
be unsnapped for added width If the
wearer desires' It for tramping or golf
NOW USE DYED RABBIT SKIN
None would guess this coat to be of
rabbit yet it really Is dyed bunny fur
The comfy shawl collar belt and in-
visible pockets ar features
are favorite hair adornments for the
younger girls They are neither very
heavy nor large but they are Just ac-
centuated enough to add that extra
finish to a simple frock which can
be so much the making of Its Inst ef-
fect Bracelets with the short sleeves
and with the entire lack of sleeves
are favorite adornments and while
they are not over conspicuous' In their
designs they are still distinctly bril-
liant and a girl wears many of them
in different Jewels and colorings if
-the fancy strikes her
IRREGULAR HEM IS FEATURE
Distinctive Fashion Carried Out by
Use of Panels and Draperies—
Fur in Favor
' “
The Irregular hem such a distinctive
feature of many of the new fall frocks
and which Is carried out by the use of
panels and draperies Is also to be met
with In the long suit coats which as a
rule are Inclined to flare around the
bottom
The lavish use of fur is another char-
acteristic of suits and coats Often
an entire Jacket front will be fash-
ioned from some soft fur such as mole
or caracul while here and there a
winter wrap is seen which besides hav-
ing a l'tir collar will also have the
sleeves of this rich materf&l ' -File
fabrics which Imitate such flat
furs as broadtail and caracul are em-
ployed as trimmings on the new frocks

The bun
“I behave much better In the winter
than I do In the summer” laughed Mr
Sun
“Well” said Madame Snow ‘fyou are
very well liked In the summer time
Fve heard Of course 1 only go by
what I hear I don’t know anything
about yon In the summer time”
' Madame Snow laughed a cold cold
laugh i
“Yes” said Mr Snow “I am 'very
welcome In the summer time though
now ahd again I am complained of
because I am not hot Yes they do
complain of me now and again
“But when I disappear for a few
days there Is a fuss I Oh bow they
do complain then!
“They say that It doesn’t seem like
the summer time when the sun isn’t
out and they say other things like
that -
“They are glad I can tell yon when
I come out after I have been taking a
long rest
“When a week goes by In the sum-
mer as sometimes happens and I
have let the King of the Clouds and
the Army of Raindrops or old King
Thunder and old Queen Thunder have
their way abont things then when I
appear again the people are Just so
pleased to see me that they smile all
over their faces”
“How ran they do thfjt?” asked
Madame Snow “Don’t they smile the
same way at all times with their
mouths and perhaps with their eyes?”
“Yes” said Mr Snow “they smile
with their Ups or mouths and their
eyes twinkle but when I say that
they smile all over their faces — well
they do I
“They give such wonderful smiles
such happy happy smiles
“Then I feel rather sorry I’ve left
them for so long but still I fnust give
the others a cliance
“Then too there must be rain to
keep the country In good condition
“There must be pienty of rain and
sometimes I will admit I haven’t al-
ways gone away when I should have
done so - -
“There have been times when things
have become very very dry and yet I
have stayed about
“Sometimes you see I can’t always
arrange a time that would suit the
“Such a Good Old Sun"
King of the Clouds and he cun’t ar-
range a time with me
“But I am going to say that though
I do a great deal of work In the sum-
mer I also play some pranks
“I do make things grow and I make
people feel fine and well and I help j
the flower8"and all of those lovely
things In the summer but I have my
pranks which I play I have my
pranks”
"What are your pranks?” asked
Madame Snow
“Last summer” said Mr Sun “1
had such an amusing time Tliero
was a little boy who said the sun was
not shining brightly enough for him
He snld he could hardly feel any
warmth from me at ail
“He didn’t realize how hard 1 was
shining until late that evening and
and then he did
“His face was just as red as red
could be And the next day every-
one said:
“ ‘you were most certainly out in
the sun yesterday’
“ ‘Yes’ he said ‘It was hotter than I
thought and shone more brightly than
I realized’
f'There was a prank I played on him
“I play many pranks like that I
get the people all sunburnt and F
freckle some of them '
“That’s a Joke toot Oh yes I
make freckles and I'm not going to tell
anyone how I do It for they might
want to know how
“I’m not sure that they would but
I don’t know They might So I
won’t tell my little secret
“In the winter I never do ouch
things and so I say that In the winter
I behave better than in the aummer”
“Oh” said Madame Snow “you’re
such a good old Sun that it doesn’t
matter If you play a few pranks once
In a while I am quite sure about
that”
