( Summary of Events)
The Germans have taken the
city of Lodz in Russian Poland
This town of nearly half a million
people is an important railroad
center on a direct line from War-
saw to the German eastern fron-
tier The German staff announces
that Lodz will be made the Ger-
man base of operations against
the Russians this winter and as-
serts that the capture of this
point will prevent an invasion of
East Prussia by the Russians
Importance of Capture
For weeks military critics bave
called Lodz "the vital point ot the
Polish campaign" To the Germans
it meant everything according to
Major Moraht a German war expert
To prevent an invasion by the Rus-
sians the kaiser's troops had to check
their enemy at the city and their cam-
paign in doing so undoubtedly brought
out the greatest generalship the war
has seen
Lodz long has been an objective
point of the German army It has
grown in recent years from an insig-
nificant place to be one of the most
populous cities in the Russian Empire
In 1910 Its population numbered 415-
604 and with this Important place as
a base it is expected that the Germans
will make a strong effort to reach the
Polish capital of Warsaw
The campaign began several weeks
ago when the Russian advance began
to threaten The Germans had re-
treated from before Warsaw and the
Russian offensive was a towering
threat The czar’s line extended from
Soldau where the Russian troops had
invaded Eeast Prussia to Cracow
where they were trying to capture the
strong Austrian fortress
Hit Russian Center
The Germans brought troops from
their western front to stop the ene-
my’s advance A battle line from
Thorn to Cracow was formed but the
Germans struck at the Russian cen-
ter which began to tall back
Then came a master stroke of gen-
eralship The Teutons were almost
surrounded by an "Iron ring"- near
Lodz The annihilation of at least
three army corps seemed inevitable
But by a marvelous feat accomplished
by General Mackenzen the ring was
broken before Russian reinforcements
arrived and the Germans although
suffering heavy losses saved them-
selves For his failure to complete the "Iron
ring” 'plans General Rennenkampf a
famous Russian leader was supersed-
ed according to an unconfirmed re-
port Italy Near Wart
Since the extraordinary meeting of
the Italian parliament late last week
followed by a special conference of
the ministry in which Italy was shown
to be overwhelmingly favorable to the
Allies it is announced that the South-
ern European kingdom may go to war
within two weeks
"Italy’s sympathies and her sense
of obligation draw her to the side of
the members of the Triple Entente”
says a semi-official dispatch from
Rome "The nation haa been nnable
to enter the war heretofore because
of lack of military equipment and
naval readlnees During the last four
months these difficulties bave been
remedied however and the country
will be well able to look after her
beet interests from this time forward"
In a notable speech to the Italian j
parliament Prime Minister Saiandra I
declared there is no clause in the
treaty with Germany and Austria
which In any way hinds Italy to aid
those nations “If these countries
which have failed in their coercive
measures to draw Italy into the con-
flict persist In accusing Italy of dis-
loyalty" Salsndra said "Italy will
publish the full text of this confiden-
tial treaty and show the world that
her present position is well justified"
Rumania Mav Enter
A dispatch from Bucharest seys Ru-
mania has definitely decided to enter

The question of when Rumania will
make its entry Into the conflict is still
being discussed however one side de-
siring to avoid a winter campaign but
the military authorities express the
fear that Servia may he defeated soon
if Rumania does lot help at once

end is in sight
Despatches from London Petrograd

beginning of the war the city where
the first heavy fighting of the war
occurred has been occupied by the
Austrians The Serbs held out four
months then evacuated the place
Russian Capture Passes
The Russian troops after a light
lasting ten days captured November
28 the Austrian positions which pro-
tected the passes in the Carpathians
extending fifty versts (about thirty-
three miles) from Koneczna which is
situated north of Bartfeld as far as

More Activity in West
While there 1s every Indication that
another big battle is Imminent in the
West there is no evidence that it ac-
tually has begun There has been
fighting in Flanders but this doubtless
Is the result of an attempt by the Al-
lies to take some advanced positions
There also are reporta that the Ger-
mans have evacuated several villages
on the Tser canal and are concentrat-
ing on new position

Youthful Son’s Gratitude
The Martins were on a trip covering
a period of three or four weeks They
left at home Master Edward Martin
aged eight years to whom his father
wrote nearly every day In each let-
ter was enclosed a shining silver dime
Five or six of these dimes had been
sent to Master Edward without any ac-
knowledgment of the generosity Then
came this brief and to-the-potnt mis-
sive: ‘Dear Father: Every time you have
wrote to me since you went sway you
put a 'dime in your letter Please
write oftener to Your loving son

Who can tell the working of chll

we may make ourselves appear un-

This was brought home to Mr llee-

the youngster was evidently thinking
hard for he was Bilent — which was
unusual
"Daddy " he said looking up sudden-
ly "I think I want to get married!”
"Do you my son?" And who to

"A Good Swell Name”
During an engagement played by
William Collier in Atlanta the player
one day was shaved by a loquacious
darky who tBked the comedian to sug-
gest a “good swell name” for his
shop At that very moment the razor
slipped and the suds were succeeded
by alum
Mr Collier made no complaint but
when he escaped from the chair he
wrote in compliance with the barber's
request a couple ot words on a piece
ot paper The barber was delighted
by the suggestion which he declared
he would forthwith adopt
The words were “Tousorial Abat-

HONESTY HAD ITS LIMITS
Woman Resisted Temptation for a
Time but Finally Proved Her-

Somebody on the back platform
dropped a bundle A woman saw It
and picked It up She was an honest
woman nevertheless she opened the
package It contained a waist pattern
of very pretty silk When she saw
that she thanked her guardian angel
she had been created honest
“If I had been an ordinary dishon-
est thing” she told her husband- “I
should keep this silk as sure as any-
thing and make tt up for myself”
“But since you aren’t” said the
man “what are you going to do with
it?
"Ob take' it back to the lost and
found department of the store where
it was bought The purchaser will
probably Inquire about it there”
One evening about two weeks later
the woman appeared at dinner in a
new waist
“Hello" said the man admiringly
"seems to me I have seen that before
isn’t It something like the piece of silk
you found?”
"It is Just like it” sighed the worn
an "It Is the same piece I took It
to the lost and 'ound department hut
I— I couldn't stand it I went around
the next day and asked for it myself"
Long Journey
A railroad from Nome to Cape Horn
is being considered and sometime
we may be able to take a through
sleeper from one end ot the American
continent to the other In that case
we would sample all kinds of climates
from arctic to tropical and we would
encounter endless variety ot surface
and scenery Popular Mechanics says
that several routes for such a rail-
road are being considered but which
ever one may be chosen the lines al-
ready built and covering over half the
distance would be utilized The f act
that these exist makes the project
seem less like a dream but it we
smile over it we might remember that
men of affairs laughed at Cecil Rhodes
when he suggested a railroad from the
Cape of Good Hope to Cairo — the en-
tire length of Africa— but that road
Is now being built— Is more than half
done indeed
