To stay happy a governor
must stay optimistic
I’m optimistic about the pre-
sent Oklahoma legislature setting
the best record in the state’s
history Jn my opinion its mem-

bers have so far conducted them-
selves in sjich a way as to deserve
the publics applause
We’ve had a minimum of the
bickering and sensational investi-
gation which marred many pre-
vious sessions Investigations by
the present legislature has been
conducted with dignity and full
regard for individual rights
- Members of this legislature
have worked steadily from the
day the session opened grinding
out essential legislation carefully
and methodically As a result
there will be no log-jam of ap-
propriation measures to block
adjournment
These money bills have been
coming to my desk regularly since
early in the session We there-
fore approach the closing days
with little danger of grave 'mis-
takes occurring in the final rush
to wind up proceedings
I take special pride in the fact
there has been such a close work
ing relationship between my of-
fice and the legislature Both in-
dividually and as a body its mem-
bership has been kind and con-
siderate of me
Some governors have boasted
of the great number of bills they
vetoed at the end of a legislative
session I have not yet decorated
a single bill with the red ink of
veto i
It’s much better to head off
bills which can’t be approved be-
fore they reach the governor’s
desk It saves hurt feelings and
embarrassment to legislators who
worked hard to get such mea-
sures approved
Leaders in the present legls-
lature recognize that fact They
have done an outstanding job
weeding out extraneous matters
and keeping essential legislation
flowing through to approval '
We are therefore dose to ad-
journment early in spite of tak-
ing a recess while the Better
Schools Amendment was sub-
mitted to a vote of the people
This is an outstanding record
It will be even better if we
can now complete' work on essen-
tial legislation strike the calen-
dar and adjourn without undue
delay In view of the many major
problems - which confronted this
legislature it will be some kind
of new record if that happens
Always before it' has been
customary for the legislature to
absorb severe criticism because
of too much bickering over min-
or matters and too little regard
for important measures pushed
through at the last minute This
time such criticism wont be
justified
The present Oklahoma legis-
lature deserves bouquetB not
brickbats '

Anglers Leave Home
Fishing: Season Here
High winds and dust have some-
what hampered Oklahoma fisher-
men this spring however March
April and May are still the best
months (other than September
and October) to catch fish Warm
balmy summer entices more fish-
ermen into the outdoors but the
cool spring and autumn months
produce more men with fish In
spring and autumn there is less
natural food in the water and fish
are active and hungry
With a $2 resident license a
few dimes' worth of hooks sink-
ers an “old cane pole” and some
bai anyone can get in on this
fishing game just follow the
crowd down to the old fishing
hole In 1954 ever 80 million
Americans bought hunting and
fishing licenses making this the
top recreational outlet in the na-
