DISTRICT COURT DOINGS
Some very important cases
have been tried in the District
Court since our last report
The case of the State agamsi
Waite Longshore for stealing
the Nightingale Ford car was
hard fought The jury -brought
in a verdict of guilty and he was
sentenced to five years in the
penitentiary at hard labor He
asked for a new trial which
was denied then he gave notice
of an appeal to the Criminal
Court of Appeals and gave
bond pending the hearing of his
appeal
The case of Mrs Minnie
Hagen who was suing the Or-
ient railroad for the death of
her husband in 1919 in which
she asked for $50000 damage
took considerable time of the
Court She had five children
at the time of the death of her
husband who was killed while
trying to make a coupling on
a freight train Since that
time one child died from diph-
theria and she was asking for
an amount to keep her and the
remaining children The jury
gave a verdict of $11000 in her
favor The railroad company
gave notice of appeal from the
verdict making a strong point
PROPER WAY TO
STOP NEWSPAPERS
As to stopping newspapers
The question is asked how to
do it The law is quite plain
The postal laws allow a pub-
lisher to extend a year’s credit
in case of a weekly newspaper
After that the publisher is re-
quired to affix a 1 cent stamp
to each copy If a publisher
sends his paper after or beyonc
the time for which it was paid
and the subscriber takes the
paper from the postoffice or the
residence or rural delivery box
the subscriber is held for the
payment of subscription the
courts entering decree of judg-
ment for the amount But if the
subscriber does not want to take
the- paper he should mark it
“Refused” and return it to the
post office or the box The
postmaster is required to make
record of this which is ample
evidence in court that the sub-
scriber refused it which re-
leases him from obligation to
pay for it if the paper is con-
tinued "to his address The law
and the courts do not consider
it germane to argue that the
paper should have been stop-
ped when the time for which it
was paid had expired The
fact that the subscriber took
the paper from the postoffice is
prima facie evidence that he
wanted it and therefore should
conference or in village affairs
are the ones that are never put
in type Many times however
since the conference began the
news that has been flashed by
telegraph and cable has caused
a reaction of sentiment that has
compelled changes of policy at
the conference table In a
sense there has been secret di-
plomacy in this Washington
meeting but it couldn’t do
much harm with 512 keen re
porters watching and interpret-
ing every move Whatever
good comes from this meeting
much of the credit will be due
to the press
The Newberry Case
The fight of 'over two years
over the question of whether
Truman H Newberry should
sit in the United States sen-
ate as a representative of the
state of Michigan came to an
end last week when the sen-
ate by a majority of five votes
refused to unseat him There
was no question but that he had
received a legal majority of
the votes in his state but the
opposition was based upon evi-
dence that a great deal of
money had been spent v in his
campaign It will be recalled
that his opponent was Henry
Ford the automobile million-
aire Ford had given the little
sum of $50000 to the Wilson
campaign fund in 1916 and so
had won the very high esteem
of the then president Wilson
induced Ford to become a can-
didate for the senate Ford is
a pretty good spender himself
and the Michigan campaign of
1918 seems to have been in a
class by itself Newberry won
in the election but was con-
tested by Ford The control
of the United States senate by
the Republicans hinged upon
the vote of Newberry and Pres
ident Wilson with his treaty
ratification at stake made un-
stinted use of the resources of
the federal government in the
prosecution of Newberry under
the corrupt practices act New-
berry was convicted but the
supreme court set him free As
every one knows now it would
not have saved the Wilson
treaty if he had succeeded in
ousting Newberry and seating
Ford but the fight on Newberry
was kept up It has been a
partisan fight It has not been
claimed that people were hired
publican chairman at its head
Some people think that' the motion-picture
people fear ''that
their “combination” may look
like a violation of the anti-trust
law and that the standing of I terdrafts secured and
Hays with the administration ge --red
may be a source of protection stocks Bonds Warrants
Others see init an attempt to 4o
add respectability to the busi-'oteReaist owned
