Jed Johnson Home
Our own Jed J Johnson is
home from Frarce looking radi
ant and happy as a 16 year-
old school girl fresh from board
ing school He has a right to
feel firoud and happy - He saw
real' serves-' at thafrort -tothe
trenches and had to undergo
many hardships aod privations
besides the great dangers and
much work of combating a foe
of educated savages Besides
all his dangers and hardship
Jed bad some very pleasant and
commendable experiences-that
is most pleasing to his
many old friends here The fol-
lowing clipping gives the facts
about Jed’s intellectual triumphs
while in France:
“The champion orator of the
American Expeditionory Force
was Jd Johnson of Walters
graduate pf the University of
Oklahoma and a member of the
Thirty sixth Division overseas
To Johbson was awarded the
decision in an oratorical contest
held at Royat Frence June 25
and participated in bv men rep
resenting five leading American
schools of oratory
State Banlt
OKLAHOMA
The fact that this Oklahoma
soldier who went across to
fight and not to orate won a
medal is more pronounced be-
cause of bia defeating an Iowa '
orator who once -came near be
ing elected to Congress because
of bis ability on the stump over
-anthuoK fraternity man-pf the
Chicago University and over
lecturer in tbe service of the-
Redpath' Horner Lyceum Bu-
reau There were live judges
and tbe decision was nnonimous
for Johnson I
Johnson will be remembered ’
by many former students of the
University and by many other
Oklahomans because of his hav-
ing won two orical contests at
tbe university and State honors
in the 8tate prohibition contest
shortly before he became a sol-
dier in the Spring of 1918 Over-
seas he was transferred to the -law
department of the school
detachment at Clearmont Uni-
versity and it was Captain La-
guida of that university that or-
ganized the contest and offered
tbe medal :
More than 2000 tickets at $1
were sold for tbe contest and
the money was turned to a fund
for rehabitatiug villages in
Northern France”
