your mistake over there at Omar but
I think soma of the things pt luted are
positively criminal I knew you’d
want the truth”—
"The truth yes But this can’t be
true” stammered Gordon
"It is Mr O’Neil did try to Interest
the Heidlemanns bnt they wouldn't
have anything to do with him and the
8 R and N was going to smash when
Mr nils came along barely In time
It was too exciting and dramatic for
aaythlng the way Mr O’Neil found
him when he was In hiding"—
"Hiding?"
"Yee Them was something shorn
blackmail or to secret arrangement be-
tween Mr HRs and th Yukon river

It was but dhyhow Murray took ad-
vantage of & and saved the North
Pass and ttdtli R and N at the same

her husband upon whose ear the word
had made a welcome Impression “I
don’t understand what you mean by
O’Neil’s ‘saving the North Pass and
his own t road at the same time— nor
Illls’ being in hiding" -"Neither
do I" Natalie confessed
"but I know yon have made a mistake
that ought to be set right” ? - ’
"Why doesn’t he cams out with the
truth?” (
"The whole thing to secret"
"Why?" " ’
Natalie ’ shrugged hopelessly and
Gordon lost himself In ' frowning
thought )
"This to amusing" he said brusquely
after a moment “It’s vital It affects
all my plans I must know everything
at once" i
Tm sorry I paid so little attention"
"Never mind Try it again and be
diplomatic If O’Neil won’t teU you
question Appleton Yon can wind him
around your Angara easily enough 1 1

The girl eyed him with a quick
change of expression ?
"Isn’t It enough to know that the
trupt has nothing to do with the 8 R

"Nor he declared Impatiently - "I
must know the whole Inside of this
secret understanding— this blackmail or

The matter 1s confidential I know
that”
"Will you do as I askr ha de-
Natalie answered him firmly :"NoI I
told yon what I did tell only so that
yen might correct”—
1 "Yon rebel eh?" 1 Gordon spoke oat
furiously :
He strode angrily from the - room
leaving Natalie a taring out upon the
bleak fall scene her shoulder very
straight her breast heaving: Gloria
did not venture to address her
' ' Fortunately for the peace of all con-
cerned Gordon left for Seattle on the
next steamer Neither of the women
believed that - Natalie’s : fragmentary
revelation was the cause of hla depart-
ure but once In touch with outside
affairs be lost no time In running
down the clews be had gathered and
it was not long before he had learned
enough to piece ' the ' truth- together
Then be once more brought his mimeo-
graph into use
The first winter snows found O’Neil’s
track laid to the bridge site and the
structure Itself well begun He had
moved hla office out to the front and
now saw little of Elisa who was
busied In writing her book She had
finished her magazine articles and they
had been accepted bnt abe bad given
him no hint as to their character
One afternoon Happy Tom burst lu
upon hla chief having hastened out
from Omar on a construction train
Drawing a Seattle paper from his
pocket he began excitedly
"Well the fat’s in the fire Murray!
Somebody has belched up the whole
North Pass story"
O'Neil seized the newspaper and
scanned It hurriedly He looked up
cowling
"Who gave this eat?" 'be inquired In
a harsh voice
Sinter shrugged “Itf In tlm Cortes
Courier too so I ’pose it came from
Gordon Blessings coins from i one
source and Gordon’s the fountain of
all evil I’m getting soi I blame him
for everything unpleasant"
"Where did be learn the Inside of
inis’ deal? By heaven there’s a leak
somewhere I” v
'"Maybe he uncovered it heck there
la the States”
Murray shook hla heed "Nobody
knows anything abent it except you
boys”
- Then he - seised the telephone at
fate elbow and called Dr Oray while
Tots listened with his shining forehead
puckered anxiously O’Neil hung up
with a black face i-
“Appleton I” he satd i "
Tom looked if possible a shade
gloomier thaa usufcfl "I wouldn’t he
too sure it was Dan if I was you” he
ventured doubtfuhy
"Where to he?" O’Neil ground out
the words betweeU’fato teeth
- "Surveying the "town site addition

CHAPTER XVII
O’Neil Verifies 8uepielone-
THE locomotive had been switch-
ed out by this time and O’Neil -hurried
to board lb On his way
to Omar be bad time thorough-
ly to weigh the results of this unex-
pected complication ‘ His present de-
sire was merely to verify hla suspicion
that Appleton had told hla secret to
Natalie Beyond that he did not care
to think for there was but one course
epen
- Hto anger reached the biasing point
after hto arrival - AS be stepped down
from the' engine cab Gray silently
handed him a code message from Lon
don which had arrived a few moments
before - When its contents had been
deciphered O’Neil cursed and be was
furious as he stumbled through the
dark toward the green bungalow on
the hUL
Swinging around the corner of the
bonse be came into a bright radiance
which streamed forth from Eliza’s
window and he could not help seeing
the Interior of the room She was
there writing busl and he saw that
ahe was clad In the elaborate kimono
which be had given her Yet It wan
jnot her personal appearance which ar-
rested his angry eyes and caused bin
atop to halt it was Instead her sup
roundings - j
He had grown to accept her prim
simplicity as ’ matter of course and
never associated her In his thoughts
with anything feminine but the room
as it lay before him now was a revela
tlon of daintiness and artful decora '
don ' Tasteful water colors bung on
the walls a warm rug was on the floor
and everywhere were rosy touches of
color The plain white bed had been
transformed Into a conch of orients'
luxury - A lace : spread - of weblike
texture covered It then pillows were
hidden beneath billowing masses of
ruffles and ribbons He saw a typical
woman’s crazy corner piled high with
cushions There was a jar of burning
Incense sticks near It— everything In
fact was utterly st variance with his
notions ef the owner Even the glri
herself seemed transfigured for her
hair was brought forward around her
face In some loose mysterious fashion
which gave her a bewllderingly girlish
appearance
"ffNeU's eyes photographed all this In
a single surprised glance aa be passed
The next moment he waa mounting
tbs steps to the porch
Dan flung open the door but his
words of greettofc froze Hto smile of
welcome vanished at ' sight of his
chief's forbidding visage
Murray - was in no mood to waste
words He began roughly: '
"Did you ten Miss Gerard that Poult-
a ay IUte is backing me?"
Dan stammered "1— perhaps— I —
What has gone wrong chief V
"Did you teU her the Inside— the sto-
ry of his agreement with the steam
host people?"
Dan paled beneath hto ten bat hto
aysa met Mpyny’s without flinching
"I think I dnl-teU her something 1
don’t qalte remember But anything
t may have said waa In confl”—
"I thought ba I merely wished to
make certain v Well the whole thing
to la the papers”
Appleton laid hto hand upon the ta-
ble to steady himself
"Then It didn’t come from her She
wouldn’t"—
"Gordon baa spread the story broad-
cast It couldn’t have come from any
other source it couldn't have reached
him in any other way for none of my
bey has breathed a word" Hto voice
rose despite his effort at self control
"Illls' agreement was Illegal" he said
savagely - Tt will probably forfeit the
charter of the North Pass or land him
in court ' I suppose you realise that! I
discovered hla secret And assured him
it was safe with me Now you peddle
It to Gordon and the whole thing is
public Here’s the first result" He
hook the London cablegram in Dan's
face and hla own was distorted with
rage There was a stir in Elisa's room
which neither noticed -Appleton wiped
hto face with uncertain hand He
moistened his Ups to say:
“I— I’m terribly sorry Bnt I'm sure
Natalie wouldn’t spy I don’t remem-
ber what I told her or how 1 came to
know about the affair- Doc Gray told
me I think in the first excitement
bnt— she— wouldn’t knowingly”—
- “Gordon fired you for talking too
much 1 thought yoo had learned your
lesson but it seems you hadn't Don't
blame Miss Gerard for pumping you—
her loyalty belongs to Gordon now
Bnt 1 require loyalty too Since you
lack It you can go
- O’Neil turned a a Elisa's door open-
ed She stood before him pale fright-
trembling "I couldn’t help hearing" sha said
"You discharge us?”
He nodded "I’m sorry 1 I’ve trusted
my ‘boyr so implicitly that the thought
of betrayal by them never occurred to
ma i I can’t have men- close to me
who make anch mistakes aa this”
’ "Perhaps there was an excuse or the
shadow of one at least When a man
to in love you know" —
Murray wheeled upon Dan and do
mended sharply:
"What's this?” Then in a noticea-
bly altered tone he asked "Do yea love
—Natalie?"
"Yea"
"Does she love youl”
“No air’’ ' -
O’Neil turned back to the girl say-
ing: “I told Dan when I hired him
that he would be called upon to dare
much to suffer much and that my In-
terests must be his He has disregard
— 1 fham and hg mint gr That'S all
There's little difference between treach-
ery and carelessness”
He left them standing there unhap-
pily dumb and still with shame Once
outside the house he plunged down the
bill as if fleeing from the scene of some
crime ' Be rushed through thb night
blindly for be had loved bis assistant
engineer and the memory of that
chalk faced startled girl hurt him
abominably
"To think that I spent the best part
of two years studying this spot!” be
told Gray as they started for the office
"1 fired Appleton” he broke out at
laat Gray looked up quickly ' "lie
acknowledged that he— did It I had
no choice - It came bard though’’
"He did some great work chief!”
"I know- That affair at the Cross-
ing— I Intend to pay him well If he’ll
accept It’s not that I like those
kids Stanley Eliza took It harder
than he It wasn't easy for me ei-
ther” be sighed wearily "I’d give'
(10000 If It hadn’t happened She
looked as If Pd struck her”
“What did they say?” - -
“Nothing He has been careless dts
loyal”—
"You told them so?”
O'Neil nodded
"And they said nothing?”
"Nothing What could they say?”'-’
Gray answered gruffly: "They mlgfit
have said a good deal They might
have told you bow they paid off your
men and saved a walkout when I had
no money-” i- ’ -
OMll stared incredulously “What
are you talking about?” he demanded
When be had the facto be rose with
an exclamation of dismay
“Heavens Why didn’t you tell me?
Why didn’t they speak out? I— I-41
- 1
I
I
why that’s loyalty of the finest kind
All the money they bad saved too
when they thought I had failed! Jove
that was fine! Oh I’m sorry! I won-
der what they think of me? I can’t let
Dan go after that I”— He seized hto
cap and hurried out of the building
a 1 a 4 IS - J -
i "It’s hardly right— when things were
going so well toot” said Dan He was
sitting crumpled up In a chair Eliza’s
arm encircling hto shoulders "I didn’t
mean to give up any secrets but— I’m
not myself when I’m with Natalie”
Tie must take our medicine” hto
later told nlm gravely - “We deserve
It for this story may spoil all he’s
done I jlldn’t think It of her though”
Dan groaned and bowed bis bead In
hto bands "I don’t know which hurts
worse” be said "bis anger or her ac-
tion She— couldn't do such a thing
sis she Just couldn’t!”
“She probably didn’t realize She
hasn't much sense' you know - Rut”
after all he’s suffered to think that we
should injure him! I could cry"
The door opened before a - rough
hand and O’Neil strode Into the room
huge shaggy In bis coonskin coat
They rose startled but he came to
them swiftly a look of mingled shame
and gladness in bis face
"I've come back to' apologize!" he
cried "I couldn't waif Jive learned
what you Children did while I was
gone and I’ve come to beg forgive-
ness - It's all right— It’s all right” -
“I don’t know what you meant” Dan
gasped' i
"Doc told me bow you paid those
mem That was real friendship It was
splendid It touched me and I— I
want to apologize You see' I hurried
right back”
' They saw that bis eyes were moist
and at the sight Eliza gave a quiver-
ing cry then turned swiftly to hide
her face She felt O’Neil’s fur clad
arm about ber shoulder ' Hto hand
was patting her' and he was saying
gently: "You are a dear child It was
tremendously good of you both and I
ought to be shot for acting as I did I
wonder If you can accept a wretched
apology as bravely aa you accepted a
wrong accusation” i
"It wasn't wrong It waa right” she
sobbed "Dsn told her sad she told
Gordon”
There there! -1 was to blame after
til for letting any one know and If
Dan made a mistake be has more than
offset it by hto unselfishness— his sac-
I forgot bow much 1
really dwe him"''
‘That affair with tho shift bosses
wasn't anything” sahl Dan hastily-
“and It was Ellza'a Idea I refused at
first hut when she started to pay them
herself T 'weakened"' He stuttered
awkwardly for bis sister was motion-
ing him desperately to be silent But
he ran on: "Oh ho ought to know the
whole truth and how miserably I acted'
sis! I deserve to be discharged”
' "Please don’t make this any harder
for me than it to” Murray smiled
"I’m terribly embarrassed for I'm not
used to apologies I can't afford to be
unjust - 1 have so few friends that 1
want to cherish them I’m sorry you
paw me In such a temper Anger to a
treacherous thing and It nlways be-
trays me' Let's forget that I was
here before and pretend tbat I Just
came to thank you for what you did”
He drew Dan into the shelter of bis
other arm and pressed the two young
people to him "I didn’t realize how
deeply you kids care for each other
and for me” -'
The same ship which had brought
the ominous news to O’Neil also
brought Curtto Gordou north He had
remained lu Seattle only long enough
to see the Illls story In print and then
bad hastened back to the front But
his satisfaction over the mischief be
had done received a rude Jolt when at
bla first moment of leisure be looked
over the late magazines which be hnd
bought Before taking leave In one
which had appeared on the newsstands
that very day he found to hla amaze-
ment an article by Miss Eliza Apple-
ton In which hto own picture appeared
He pounced upon it eagerly and then
as be read hto eyes narrowed and hto
Jaw stiffened There spread ont to
the public gaze was hto own record in
full including lris Initial venture into
the Kyak coal fields his abandonment
of that project In favor of Hope Con-
solidated and an account: of hto con-
nection ' with the latter enterprise
Eliza had not hesitated to call the mine
worthless and she showed how he
knowing its worthlessness from the
first bad used it as a lure to Investors
Then followed the story of his efforts
to gain a foothold In the rallroad'strug-
gle bis defeat at tbe'Salmon liver can-
yon hto rout at the delta crossing and
hto final deathblow at Kyak Hto ca-
reer stood out boldly lu all Its fraudu-
lent colors failure was written across
every ’one of hto undertakings The
naked facts showed him visionary In-
competent unscrupulous
- Thus far he had succeeded In keeping
a large part of hto stockholders In ig-
norance of the true condition of Hope
Consolidated but htfvqualled at the In-
evitable result of this article which
had been flung far and wide Into every
city and village In the land He dared
not think of its effect upon hto present
enterprise now ao auspiciously launch-
ed He had made a ringing appeal to
the public and lto support would hinge
upon ls confidence in him as a man of
affairs Once that trust waa destroyed
the Cortez Home railway would crum-
ble aa swiftly aa had all hla other
schemes
The worst of It was that he knew
himself shut off from the world for five
days as effectually as if he were locked
In a dungeon There was no wireless
equipment on the ship he could not
start the machinery of hto press bu-
reau and with every hour this damna-
ble story was bound to gain momen-
tum He cursed the luck which had
set him on this quest for vengeance
andbound hto bands
Meanwhile Dan was struggling with
hto problem In bis own way The pos-
sibility that Natalie had voluntarily
betrayed him was a racking torture
and the remembrance of Eliza’s words
added to hto suffering ' He tried to
gain some hint of hto chiefs feeling
but Murray’s Jrpnk and friendly atti-
tude baffled him
When at last be received a brief
note from Natalie asking him to call
be raced to Hope afraid yet eager to
bear what she might say She met
him on the dock -as he left the S R
and N motorboat and led him directly
to the house
Natalie went straight to the point
Tm In dreadful trouble” she said
"and I sent for you to tell you that I
1 had no Idea of betraying confidences”
Dan uttered some Inane platitude
but bis eyes lighted with relief
“When I saw in the papers what a
stir that North Pass and Yukon story
had made I was afraid I had done
something dreadful TeU me to it so?
Did I make trouble?" '
“You certainly did O’Nell was furi-
ous and nobody knows yet what the
result will be It— It nearly cost me
my head”
( “Does be blame me?”
“N-noI He says you’re on1 Gordon’s
aide now He blames me or did until
he generously took it on himself” -'
iWhat does It all mean? I’m near-
ly distracted” Natalie’s eyes were
pleading “Did you think I spied on
you?”
Dan glowed with embarrassment and
something more “I didn’t know what
to think” be said “1 was wretchedly
miserable for I was afraid And yet
I knew you couidn't do such a thing
I told O’Neil I wasn’t responsible for
what I did or said when with you”
“Mr Gordon sent me to Omar pur-
posely He sent me twice It was I
who brought him word tbat the road
was saved I told all I'd learned be-
cause I believed he no' longer hated
Mr O’Neil I was happy to tell all 1
knew for he deceived me as be de-
ceives every one I learned the truth
too late"
“Why do you stay here?" Dan de-
manded hotly
“Why? I— don’t know Perhaps be-
cause I'm afraid to leave - I’m alone
You see mother believes In him She's
completely under hto sway and I can't
tell her thq sort of man he Is She's
happy and ber happiness is' worth
more to me than my own- But— I
sliall go away I can’t stand It here
much longer"
“Where will you go?”
"Back to my old home perhaps
Somewhere — anywhere sway from
Alaska”
CHAPTER XVIII
Appleton Confronts Gordon
SUPPOSE you know I can’t got
I along without you" said Das
"Please don’t! You haTe been
very good and sweet to ms
but” — She shook her - dark heail
“You couldn't marry me— even If I
eared for you In that way” '
“Why? I Intend to anarry you
whether you want to or not”
“Oh Dan It wouldn't do! You know
—about mother I've nearly died of
hame and It would be sure to come '
up Somebody would speak of It some
time” s
Dan’s blue eyes went cold and
smoky aa he said
“It would take a pretty brave person
lu mention the subject lu my presence
I don’t care a whoop for anything Gor-
don or your family may say or do”
There was a stir lu the ball outside
aud the speaker turned to behold Cur-
tis Gordon hitnself In the doorway
The latter In passing hnd been drawn
by the sound of voices and had lookod
Into the library Recognizing Nntnlle’s
caller lie frowned
"What Is this?" lie Inquired coldly
“A proposal? Do I Interrupt?"
“You do” snid Dan then nfter a
pause "I’ll finish It when you leave”
i Gordon entered und spoke to his
stepdaughter!
"What to this man doing In mv
house?”
"He Is here at my Invitation” she
replied '
“Tell him to'vteave ' 1 won't have
him here”
“Why don't you tell me?” cried Dan
“I don't need an interpreter”
“Young man don’t be rash There Is
a limit to iny patience If you have
the indecency to come here after what
you have done and after wlint your
sister has said nbaut me I shall cer-
tnluly”— - v '
Dan broke in roughly: “I didn't come'
to see you Gordou You may be an
agreeable sight to some people hut
you’re no golden sunset In my eyes
Eliza flattered you”
" Natalie gave a little terrified cry for
the men were glaring at each other
savagely Neither seemed to bear ber
"Did youfead that article?”
"Read It? I' wrote It!”
Gordon’s face flamed suddenly with
rage He pointed to the door with
trembling fingers and shouted:
“Get out! I'll not have you here 1
discharged you once Get out!” His
utterance was rapid and thick
Dan smiled mirthlessly dangerously
In a soft voice be said:
“I haven’t finished proposing I ex-
pect to be accepted Yon'U pardon
me I know" :
“Will yoa go you” — '
Dan turned to the girl who after
tbat first outcry bad stood as If spell-
bound her face pale ber eyes shining
“Natalie dear” he said earnestly
"you can't live in the same house with
this beast He’s a cheat and a scoun-
drel He's done his best to spoil your
life and heil succeed if you stay so
come with 'me' now Eliza loves you
and wants you and I’ll never cease
loving you with all my heart Marry
me and we’ll go”—
Gordon uttered an Inarticulate sound
and came forward with hto hands
working hungrily
“Don’t interrupt!” warned Dan over
bis shoulder and hto white teeth
gleamed In audden contrast with his
tan “No man could love you as I do
dear” — Gordon’s clutch fell upon him
and tightened Dan stiffened and hla
words ceased Then the touch upon
his flesh became unbearable Whirl-
ing be wrenched himself free He
was like a wild animal now Body
aqd spirit had leaped Into rebellion at
contact' with Gordon Hto long re-
sentment burst Its bounds Hto lean
muscles quivered Hto frame trembled
as If It restrained some tremendous
pressure from within
