A Mechanic’s Views
Dear Mr Editor:—
In ex-Gov Haskell’s speech a
few weeks since at the Court
House he made the statement
that a working man now had to
pay $280 for an ordinary blanket
to keep him comfortable during
the cold weather He said $180
of this was the tariff on the
blanket and $100 was the worth
of it He said if the democrats
were in power this blanket would
cost only $100 Let us figure a
little The writer has lived un-
der democratic government and
the average wages for a working
man was 50 cents per day 12
hours it would take 24 hours to
make the dollar and he did not
get the necessary rest between
working hours Under the pres-
ent government the average
wages for the working man is
$250 for 8 hours which would
mean $750 for 24 hours Now
he could pay $280 for his blank-
t $150 for a sack of flour 25
cents for coffee 25 cents for
sugar $100 for meat 40 cents
for a peck of potatoes 20 cents
for fruit and have several days
rations ahead and $100 in cash
left Under republican govern-
ment he would not have to lie
down the first night after he
bought the blanket with an emp-
ty stomach but would have sev-
eral days rations ahead and still
have the price of a democratic
blanket in his pocket This free
trade business don’t look good to
me boys I have had a little taste
of it I remain for tariff
