The hog and the knocker are as
a rule one and the same person
The greater part of Kansas suf-
fered a killing frost the first of the
week
Talk the new road law proposi
tion and the rural district consoli-
dation with your neighbor and
read all the literature on the sub-
ject that you cau get
Just a square deal for everybody
that’s what this paper stands for
and its got the backing of enough
of the peopleho!ding to a similar
view to carry its point

Tom Staley worked unceasingly

the citizens ticket making regu-
nlar trips in the anto taking vo-
ters to the polls Such energy is
poorly rewarded with the mere of-
fice of town clerk
— --
We want the help of every read-
er of this paper in behalf of this
town and country The better
ment (f cxhtiig (rdititi!
concerns you The paper
is here to assist in building up the
town and country and we consider
it just as much the duty of the cit-
izens to take up this majter as it
is of the paper A local paper has
a good chance to judge of condi-
tions in its own locality as com-
pared witbat of others and will
rarely if ever advocate a new idea
or a reform that is not perfectly
proper aad within the scope of its
patrons in fact it does not dare at
at the cost of losing its prestige
with its readers That' being the
case it should be liberally support-
ed as it stands for justice morality
sobriety and progress and fails of
its purpose when not properly sup-
ported A man having a family of
girls and boys and who takes two
or three cheap story papers all of
them together not costing over 25
cents a year and iu which stories
of love hate and revenge are mix-
ed is establishing in his family a
false set o! standards when he
should exercise the same carefnl
supervision in this matter that he
would in case of weeds in his corn
or other matters detrimental to bis
interests In soliciting subscribers
we are frequently met with the re-
mark that the party solicited is
already taking more papers than
lie has time to read and inquiry
usually reveals the fact that the
class of cheap literature above
ineetioned is responsible for the
stand taken This class of low
priced literature tends to beget a
craving for more of the same the
intent and purpose of the publish-
ers being to keep their readers in
ignorance of the true standard by
purporting to fill all tbe require-
ments of the home and farm by
ly tbeir publications In tbeir
1 olumnf they are constantly solic-
iting their readers to send money
for the cheap stuff advertised in
its columns Aad the worst of it
is they get it as these periodicals
are run purposely for- these fake
concerns tbeir principal revenne
being derived from the advertising
in tbeir columns Now if these
same subscribers would cut 11 the
shoddy stuff take one or two peri-
odicals of kuown quality together
with their home paper they would
haAe more time to improve their
minds along the right lines be
stdeskeeping in touch with the live
topics of the day The high class
magazine of today is a revelation
of the printers art aad tbe range of
subjects covered in a year is truly
astounding and serves admirably
as an educator for tbe untraveled
as nothing short of travel cau do
t A Xsil Order Baby -
It is said that the little children
of a farmer near Newkirk who
patronized the catalogue houses
were playing with tbe catalogues
when the nurse announced to
them that a new baby had just
arrived whereupon one of the
knowing ones ventured the asser-
tion: “Yes I know where it came
from It is a Sears & Roebuck
baby and I bet its adultrated like
some of the other stuff and papa
will have to keep it because he
sent the money in advance’ —

Outbreaks la Oklahoma School Lands
Trouble Are Imminent
Ben F Berkey chief inspector of
the school land department who has
been op guard over the school lands
in the Cleveland oil field for several
weeks returned to Guthrie yesterday
but will probably go back to Cleve-
land in a few daye ' He oayo that
everything is quiet now but that
uew complications are liable to arise
at any time especially If aoy action
Bhoold be taken ’ by congress wbicb
might be construed as in any way
favorable to the Warren amendment
“It Is like Vesuvius” he said “still
rumbling and likely to break out a-
gain at any time Every occurrence
In Washington no mattter bow small
that seems favorable in any manner
to tlie trespassers on scbooMands is
taken by them as a signal to get busy
again aod conditions there need
watching all tbe time”
It is Berkey’s opinion that If the
board bud nut taken prompt action
in tearing down the first oil derricks
erected there woold now be forty such
derricks in operation on school laods
there ne further says that the oil
operator generally outside of tbe al-
leged tn-spassers are in sympathy

the millionare Pennsylvania oil
operator back of tlie erection of the
first derrick who Is charged with
cutting timber on school land will
come up for trial in the federal court
at Pawnee during the term just com-
menced and the board considers that
it has a very strong case against him
E M Clark of Pawnee Congress-
man McGuire’s law partner is Mil-
liken’s attorney While no definate
evidence to that effect has been
obtained employes of the school land
department believe that arrange-
ments have been made by which in
ease the mineral filings on school
lands are legalized by congress all
the filings io tlie Cleveland field or
