THERE IS NO PUNISHMENT
TO FIT THIS CRIME
A female “thing" and her son — a
seducer — and a courtesan were sen-
tenced to the penitentiary Saturday
at Waurika for terms of seven five
and two years respectively Ilaug-
ing would have been a light form of
punishment for the trio of miserable
heartless fiends and that would not
have paid the jienalty in full
The particular crime for which the
defendants were sent to the peniten-
tiary was abandoning a babe just a
few days old on the doorstep of a
vacant farm house where the decom-
posed body of the little angel was
found a couple of weeks later

FARMERS MUST BE AS BUSY
AS THE WEVIL EXPERTS SAY I
If you expect to whip the weevil in
a fair fight you have got to show as
much energy as he does — which
means that though the operation may
be both difficult and unpleasant
poisoning must be done even when
the plants are wet and the ground
muddy so says the United States
Department of Agriculture with re-
gard to poisoning the weevil with
calcium arsenate The department
has found that during the critical

DEFEAT OF BONUS BILL
MAKES JOHNSON STOCK GO UP
Announcement in Washington Sat-
urday that all hope of the passage
of the bonus bill had been abandoned
has without doubt had the effect of
boosting Jed Johnson’s eandidacy for
congress For months administra-
tion leaders have been promising to-
pass the adjusted compensation bill
“next week" The audden announce-
ment that the bill has been aban-
doned is a slap in the face to the ex-
service men and women of the United
States Mrs Blanche Freeman de-
partment commander of the Legion
Auxiliary of the state said Mon-
day morning: “We need more exser-
viee men in congress The trouble
with congress is that it is largely
dominated by professional politici-
ans and millionaires The same
ly the time when the weevil is busiest
The numbers are likely to increase
so rapidly that the control already
gained is lost In that event the
weevil inflicts about as much damage
as if no poisoning had been done und
the farmer loses in addition what
he has spent in poisoning operations
The only way to prevent that sort
of result is to let wet weather inter-
fere as little as possible with poison
ing operations Stick to the sche
dule the department says regardless
of weather condition
The department realizes of course
thajt poisoning cannot be done in
pouring rain bnt the fanner the
spiftialists urge should take advan
tage of the earliest opportunity to
get back into the field after the rain
that he should make every effort to
get the cotton again dusted regular-
ly even though fair weather does
not seem certain He can afford
they say to put on poison even in un-
settled weather It may be washed
off again shortly bnt on the other
hand the weather even when it looks
most threatening may stay fair long
enough to allow weevil control to
operate Every fanner is sufficient-
ly profitable to justify it

TRUCK THIEVES FAIL
TO MAKE THEIR ESCAPE
J P Morrison living seven miles
south of the city wus awakened about
1 :00 o’clock Monday morning by the
sound of a truck that was just start-
ing to leave his pasture He arose
and walked outside the honse when
he could see headlights of the car ns
it was being driven across the pas-

the outbiuldings very plainly and

the boys started in pursuit in his car
Running without lights they eaine

would turn off in another direction
Mr Morrison got out of the ear anl
ordered them to halt which they re-
fused to do but instead put on all
the power at their command where-
upon Mr Morrison fired a-few shots
in an effort to halt them They re-
turned the fire and at this juncture
Morrison pulled a little finer bead
in an effort to stop them They con-
tinued at top speed when some dis-
tance down the section line one of
the men jumped out and started
across the country in the weeds
The truck continued down the road
a distance of about 300 yards when
a big ditch was encountered into
which it plunged The party in pur-
suit arrived on the Beene soon after

Farming like every other business must cut
down the overhead
It is not a question of being able to afford a
Fordson it is a question of being able to con-
tinue farming on the old too-costly basis
The farmer’s problem is not all a sales problem
it is also a production problem He must cut
down the cost of production
The Fordson does more work at a lower cost
