You will miss the chance of
( doing some close buying on your

the ads in the American this
: week They contain some very
attractive reading
Will we find lead and zinc
! around Afton? That question is
asked us a good mamy times in
a week and we can only answer
by saying that it is our firm be-
lief that we will It is only a
r question of hunting it out With

One of the most effective ways
’ for local merchants to oppose en-
croachment of mail order houses
is to advertise liberally in the
home papers Too many mer-
’ chants sleep on their oars while
the catalogue house comes in and
takes a large portion of their
trade They demur at anything
like a thorough system of adver-
tising contending that the drift
to the mail order houses is bound
to come and yet they make free
- complaint over the inroads of
mail order houses into their par-
1 ticular trade— American Lum-i-bermari

a real state of preparedness it
may be necessary to intern a few

Fighting the flies
Now is the time to begin an
efficent campaign against flies
They will be more in evidence
more of a rihisance in the hot
weather but by taking the proper
measures in the spring hot
weather precautions and efforts
Will not be so much needed The
fight against flies has two princi-
pal points of strategy the fight
conducted by individuals which
is largely in the homes and that
conducted by the health and
other authorities The first aims
at keeping out and killing the
adult flies the second at prevent-
ing their breeding -Of
course the roost important
and immediate measure to abate
the fly nuisance in the home is
that the house be properly screen-
ed If only a few flies get past
this first line of defense ' the
“swatter" is effective Poisoning
of flies has also met with marked
success For this purpose forma-
lin or formaldehyde has been
found practical and effective
Most of the cases of apparent
failure haye been due to incorrect
use of this agent The addition
of sweet milk to formaldehyde is
said to make an attractive and
atat bait for flies The solution
is made by adding one tablespoon-
ul (half an ounce) of 40 per
cent formalin to one-half pint
(eight ounces) of a mixture con-
sisting of equal parts of milk and
water’ 'The mixture Js poured
nto shallow plates and a piece of
bread placed in the middle of
each for the flies to alight upon
Other food should be removed
This method will kill flies in great
numbers Care should be exer-
cised in using it if therq are
children in the house

anyone has a collie that he has
found please take it to Elmer so
