American Sea Poet
Now that John Masefield has come
to be the poetic Interpreter of life at
e to his generation of Britons It Is
Interesting to see an American poet
Lincoln Colcord rising to he the same
for his countrjmen Beginning his
career on a vessel navigating Cape
Horn he comes of five generations of
seagoing Maine folk His bohood
was spent on a ship sailing the seven
eas so that now when he comes to
write a poem on “The Vision of War
or when he discusses before clubs of
literary and civic spirited men “Some
of the Fallacies of American Democ-
racy" it is not a product of the ur
ban -graded school which never has

SIMPLE RULES FOR FIGURES
Remembering These One May Always
Be Sure as to the Divisi-
bility of Numbers
It Is often convenient to know
whether a given number Is divlsiblo
by another without going through the
usual process of division Almost ev-
eryone knows that however large a
number may be it Is divisible by 6
If the last digit Is 6 or 0 The follow-
ing gives the rule for some other num
bers :
A number Is divisible by 2 when the
last digit is divisible by 2 by three
when the sum of the digits Is divisible
by 3 by 4 when the number repre-
sented by the last two digits is divis-
ible by 4 by 5 when the number ends
In 5 or 0 by 6 when it Is divisible by
2 and also by 3 by 8 when the num-
ber represented by the last three dig-
its is divisible by 8 by 9 when the
sum of the digits Is divisible by 9
For example: The number 1728 Is
divisible by 2 because Its last digit 8
Is divisible by 2 by 4 because2S is
divisible by 4 and by 8 because 728
is divisible by E It Is also divisible
by 3 and by 9 for the sum of Its digits
totals 18 a number divisible by 3 and
by 9 Since It Is divisible by 2 and
by 3 it Is also divisible by 6 -
To find whether a number Is divis-
ible by 7 you must go through the
usual process of division Youths

TURNS TALENT TO ACCOUNT
Counterfeiter Confined In Federal Pen-
itentiary Haa Done Some Excel-
lent Decorative Work
Albert Leon who has been an In-
mate of the federal penitentiary al
Leavenworth Kan for the last three
years has turned to good account the
talent which enabled him to establish
a reputation as one of the cleverest
counterfeiters the authorities ever dis-
covered He has decorated with
mural paintings and frescoes the Inte-
rior of a chapel and several other apart-
ments connected with the prison and
gays he Is enjoying the work
Leon's career of crime and the cir-
cumstances of his arrest constitute e
chapter In secret service annals which
surpasses In thrilling interest the
most absorbing of dime novels He es-
tablished himself on the small Island
of Nootka In British Columbia and
there set up complete counterfeiting
paraphernalia Leon not only was ex-
ceptionally expert In turning out ex-
cellent plates and prints but was In-
genious In passing counterfeits lie
turned loose a different class of coun-
terfeits In practically every Pacifla
coast city and town and was extreme-
ly successful In “getting away with
his spurious note Finally the secret
service men raided the island and
took Leon Even this exploit was
eventful The secret service party was
wrecked and had to be rescued by a
revenue cutter

BANDIT CHIEFTAIN HEMMED IN
BY MEXICAN AND AMERICAN
TROOPS
DEPENDS ON CARRANZISTAS
If Troop Remain Loyal To the First
Chief Villa Will Be Compelled
To Fight Or Surrender
Soon
El Paso— Francisco Villa has bees
driven Into a trap by the rapid advance
of the American troops according to
the Information received by wireless
dispatches from the front and In tele-
graphic dispatches to General Gabriel
Cavlra the Carranza commander at
Juares
Everything seems now to depend on
the ability of the Carranza garrisons
to hold their end of the net On
three sides the bandit chief Is hemmed
in by strong Carranza columns while
on the fourth the Americana are driv-
ing forward with amazing speed
Villa was reported in the Bablcora
Lake region on the ranch of Mrs
Phoebe llearst which he has ravaged
several times In the past Bablcora la
about fifty five miles south of Galeana
where one section of the American ex
pedltionary force has arrived and Is
pushing forward at the rate of thirty
three miles a day A few miles to the
west of the bandits position is Nam
iqulpa which Is held by a powerful
Carranza garrison On the east are
the frowning barriers of the Sierras
Maderas mountains barring the way
to Sonora General Gutierrez Car
ranza’a first chief declares that he
holds all the passes to Sonora
To the south Villa’s way Is blocked
by the Carranza garrison at Madera
a town of considerable Importance as
the headquarters of tne Madera Com-
pany limited an American concern
which haa vast lumber mining and
railroad interests On account of the
Importance of this town an exception-
ally heavy Carranza sorce Is said to
bold it
Situation Hinges On Carranlestas
The whole situation seems to hlnee
on the Carranzlstas Tf they remain
loyal to the first chief which up to
the present they have shown every
Indication of doing Villa appears
trapped It Is of course realized that
he Is on ground of hts own choosing
and a country admirably suited for
guerrilla warfare and surprise attacks
A telegram received by General
Gavila at Juarez from Col Nieto
Malras Carranza eommander at Pear-
son stated that Villa fled from El
Valle to Averda abandoning thirty of
his wounded men Among the wound-
ed who had been shot In the Columbus
raid and carried along In wagons only
to be abandoned at El Valle was said
to be the Vlllista leader Pablo Lope
Lopez Is the leader whose death was
reported as a positive fact at the Co-
lumbus raid Later reports cast some
doubts on his deatn and Indicated
that another chief carrying his papers
might have been the real victim Lo-
pez In these later reports was said
to be badly wounded

Activity at Verdun Is Lessened — Sev
eral Vessels Sunk
London — The Dutch government haa
sent a very strong note to the German
government regarding the sinking of
the steamer Tubantla according to the
Niouws Vanden Dag of Amsterdam
With the slackening of the fighting
around Verdun the Russians have
started a big offensive movement
against the Germans on the eastern
front
A raid by German seaplanes on the
east coast of England and by French
airmen on Met and other German
towns the sinking of a French tor
pedo boat destroyer by a submarine in
the Adriatic and the reported sinking
of an Austrian hospital ship by an en-
tente underwater boat are reported
In official and unofficial communica
tlons
Berlin chronicles an attack of great
violence by the Russians around Drls-
wlaty lake and Lake Narocz but says
the Russians were repulsed with gTeat
losses 9270 Russian dead having been
counted In the Lake Narocz region
War on the Innocents
London — Nino persons were killed
and thirty-one injured In a raid of font
German seaplanes over the east coast
of Kent A British airman brought
down one raider over the sea the Gen
man observer being killed According
to a dispatch from Ramsgate the two
German seaplanes which carried out a
raid on that place were attacked at
sea by a French machine before reach-
ing the coast The seaplanes however
arrived over the town and dropped a
number of bombs one of which killed
s man and four children
