A Good Time To Oil
The Streets Is Now
If we want a dustless Main street
during the winter we should oil
the streets now The dust is be-
ginning to flyagain-and the dress-
ing of oil given early in the year
is getting thin By putting anoth-
er coat of oil on the streets now
we get the benefit of the first
coat and improve the streets that
much
It has been proven by exper-
ience that oiling the streets is bet-
ter and cheaper than sprinkling
and there would be no opposition
to oiling them at this time All it
takes is for some one to get out
and raise the money

Highway Get Busy
We don’t know whether the
ileople of Afton and Ottawa coun-
y generally realize the impor-
tance of this town and county get-
ting on the big Jefferson highway
or not but if they don’t it is time
they wake up The proposed high-
way will run from Winnepeg Can-
Ada to New Orleans and will be
one of the most important nation-
A1 highways in the country Thous-
ands of automobiles will travel it
every year and in the event of
Var it would become of the high-
est importance in the scheme of
National defense
Vinita Pryor Wagoner Musko-
gee Checotah Eufaula McAles-
ter Atoka and Durant are the
towns that the route would prob-
ably go through in this state and
they are all alive and pulling for
the road A big meeting will be
held in New Orleans the 16th of
this month and thousands of del-
egates will be present to boost
the road
Afton can get on the highway if
we come alive and get in line
It would be worth more to us than
two railroads and we should wake
up and get busy
A meeting will be held in the
city court room today at 3 p m
at which delegates from Grove
Bernice and Southwest City are
expected to be present and at
which plans will be formulated to
put those towns and Afton on the
proposed route All citizens should
be present as it is of vital interest
to every resident of Afton

Monthly State Pension $166
There are about 25 people two
of them women in this county
drawing state pensions but they
are not bragging about it
The intention of the state law
was to provide a pension of $10
per month for ex-Confederate
soldiers or their widows under
certain conditions but the num-
ber of succeeful applicants was so
great that it cut the monthly am-
ount for each person to $166—
