Elmer Sprout Well-known Over
This Part Of State Takes
His Own Life Act
' A Mystery
&shock that can only be imagined
was experienced by the citizens of our
town and also the large number of vis-
itors this evening at 5:35 when the in-
telligence was conveyed to them that
E E Sprout had shot and killed him-
self at his home on Smith Kansas Av-
enue Mr Sprout has fort the past five
years lived in Cherokee engaged in the
livery business and was one of our
most prominent citizens having at all
times been connected with the enter-
prise and prosperity which has charac-
terized the city and had during the
current week been more active than
ever in assisting in making the Fair
entertainment a success No effort on
his part had been spared to make vis-
itors welcome and comfortable He
had just returned from the fair grounds
with his wife and daughter in an auto-
mobile entered the house washed the
dust from hi S face and hands and tak-
ing a revolver in his band placed the
muzzle to his temple and sent a bullet
througn his head causing instant
death leaving as a mystery the motive
for such a rash act His wife at once
gave the alarm and friends immediate-
ly went to the scene but they could
render no assistance that would recov-
er the body the shot having perform-
ed its evident intent to destroy life
No solution has been made of the
cause and only the fact that Mr
Sprout has suffered much physically
for several years and had so weighed
upon him in addition to the severe
hot weather and strain of mind by
participation in the current fair fee
tivities had caused a condition of tem
porary dementia
That a respected citizen a husband
and father and a person whose coun-
tenance always was cheerful and
never failed to salute his fellowman
with a disposition of jovial character
should so suddenly be taken from our
midst and in such a manner is an un-
solved mystery and casts a gloom that
will take time to eradicate

At The Races
The race program this afternoon
was not as long as some of the former
days still everyone present was well
satisfied with the results and plenty
of excitement occasioned by the en
trys caused it to seem longer than it
really was
In the 2:21 pace Silver Heel Elec-
tion Seal Lou Christy Flower Girl
and Harry B finished in the order
named Time 2:22 1-4 It took four
heats to decide this race the animals
were all in good shape and well driven
The 2:20 trot the next race called
was a splendid exhibition of speed
The entrys finished--Lula B first
Paderewsky second Judge Hooker
third and Albert Parker fourth
During an intermission in the heats
of these races the splendid trotter
Billy Buck the greatest money win-
ner in one year on the big circuits in
the world was driven an exhibition
half-mile- with a pace 'maker and al-
though the time was on the last quar-
ter showed a mark of 2:12 This
horse is 15 years old and at one time
had a mark of 2:06 It is claimed that
he won $34000 in one year on the east-
ern tracks
The 'slow mule race the most excit-
ing event of the day was next pulled
'off and all the more excitement was
occasioned by the fact that the affair
was finally called a tic the two bur-
rows coming out so near together that
it was impossible- for the judges to
see a difference in their finish
The mile run the one big race the
sports have been watching for all
through the fair was next pulled off
and the money went:—Fred Funston
first Wild Rose second Harry K
third and P J Powell fourth Belva
way also ran P J Powell was set
back in the money for interfering
with Harry K at the three quarter
pole

Boy Hurt
While watching the balloon ascenaion
at the Fair grounds yesterday after-
noon Elmer Dugan 12 pear old son of
Jim Dugan living near Dacoma 'was
struck on the head by a falling pore
and a big gash cut in his head The
pole struck him glancing otherwiso he
would be killed outright As it was
he bled profusely for some time but it
was thought he would be alright by
morning Of course this is very inter-
esting to the little fellows but they
should be closely 1 watched at a time
like this else we might have a repeti-
