Sheriff Rawlings Announ-
ces for Re-election
Sulphur Okla
March 1st 1916
To the Voters of Murray County:
‘ This is to announce to you that
I am a candidate for the demo-
cratic nomination for the office of
Sheriff of this county
I have hesitated for the past 60
days to make this announcement
and before I would consent to
make the race again I have con-
sulted with many people and es-
pecially those whom I thought
were my friends in regard to
this and I have found they were
much more numerous than they
have been heretofore and it is up-
on the advice of these friends
that I again seek the office - "
In consulting with those who
have heretofore supported and
elected me to the office of Sheriff
I have always made this state-
ment “that if there was another
who could better fill the Sheriff’s
office than I who would become a
candidate for the office that I
would not make the race” My
friends who are responsible for
my previous elections advise me
that they don’t think that person
has announced They say for
me I have made a good officer
that I have been true to my
friends and fair to my enemies
and that under the existing cir-
cumstances they insist that I en-
ter this race at once for re-election
and this is my reason for
entering the race
Most everyone who has lived
in this' county any length of time
knows me in person therefore I
do not make this statement for
our benefit for you no doubt
ave read it before
I was born and raised in the
good old State of Tennessee and
about 18 years ago came to what
is now Murray county in a cov-
ered wagon with my family I
have seen this county develop
and have done what I could in
my humble way to assist in de-
veloping it
Politically I have always been
a democrat and ever since I have
been old enough to vote I have
always been loyal to my party
heartily supporting its nominees
regardless of whether they were
my personal choice or not I do
not arrogate unto myself the
right to criticise any man for
aligning himself with another
political party for some of my
very best friends are republicans
and socialists And in this an-
nouncement I pledge you this: If
I am defeated I will not sulk in
my tent after the primary elec-
tion and refuse to assist in elect-
ing those that have beep nomi-
nated in the primary but on the
other hand 1 hereby agree to
3
stand by our party’s nominees
and to do all in my power to hon-
estly and fairly bring about their
election for I believe that those
who go in our primary are moral-
ly bound to stand by their party’s
selection
During my term as sheriff I
have tried to carry on the affairs
of that office in a courteous fair
and business-like manner I have
never mistreated any man wom-
an or child who has come under
my control and those who have
been so unfortunate as to get in-
to trouble and those who have
Berved jail sentences -1 have
treated as fair as I knew how and
I believe that all of these without
a single exception are my friends
As yet I have not used violence
on any person in arresting them
and if I continue as your Sheriff
the greatest desire of my life
shall be that the blood of no one
shall be thrust upon me And I
pledge you that I shall do my of-
ficial duty fairly and impartially
as I see it under our law
Now I want the voters to un-
derstand that I am making this
race on my past record as an of-
ficial of this county and I point
to that record with pride and
upon that record I earnestly Bo-
licit your vote
In conclusion I must say that
'you folks who have elected me
heretofore cannot know how
much I appreciate your actions
in so doing You have been kind
to me and mine and whether I
am elected again or go down in
defeat I want you to know I’ll
still be your friend If there ever
comes a time when I can serve
you call on me for the way will
not be too long nor the night too
dark for me to do what I can for
you :
Hoping to see each and every
voter in the county before the
primary I am
Yours respectfully
M S Rawlings
’ Sheriff Rawlings’ announce-
ment which appears above
needs no comment and he needs
nd introduction -to the voters as
every voter in the county is per-
sonally acquainted with him He
is now serving his third term as
sheriff which of itself is a trib-
ute to his efficiency and the con-
fidence the voters have in him
He says he is willing to continue
serving the people if they are
satisfied with his services and
still want him— otherwise he will
step down and out and have no
sore spots He is a natural peace
officer is skillful in catching
criminals and has done some ar-
tistic pieces of detectiye work
during his official career He has
been especially vigilant in catch-
ing horse and cattle thieves and
restoring stolen stock to owners
Mr Rawlings is a genial gen-
tleman impartial in the perform-
ance of his duties’ and has shown
himself to be a fearless officer
On his record as a peace officer
his humane treatment of prison-
ers his efficiency in catching
criminals and his impartial dis-
charge of his various duties he
seeks reflection and has a strong
following in all parts of the coun-
ty who are “Rawlings men” to
the core -
We bespeak for Sheriff Raw-
lings a calm consideration at the
hands of the voters He needs
no eulogy from us His record
speaks for him and he stands on
his record

History of Friendship Sun-
day School
Mr J A Lewis of Houston
Miss is the father of Attorney
W N Lewis of Davis He is 80
years of age and has been super-
intendent of Friendship Sunday
school located near there for
over 40 consecutive years He
recently wrote an article giving
a short history of the school and
it is interesting even to those
who are not familiar with that
community The article follows:
History op Friendship
Sunday School
‘ ‘Friendship Sunday school was
organized in 1865 in a log cabin
that had been used as a residence
Later we built a log meeting
house which was used for twelve
years later we built a neat frame
church house Be it remembered
that this Sunday school was over
30 miles from a railroad Our
community nearly all attended
Sunday school from the cradle
to the grave they came My
sainted -wife and other good
women often taught a class with
a baby on their laps We ob-
served the Methodist rule to kneel
for prayer We had a good lead-
er in singing our music was in-
spiring We' also taught our
members to pray in public At
one time we had 40 out of 100
members that would pray in pub-
lic We had several boys and
girls not over 15 years old that
would pray in public
“Let us stop and ask What is
the aim and purpose of the Sun-
day school? It takes time mom
ey labor and thought to maintain
a Sunday school and my idea is
we should aim at good results
A Sunday school is as correctly a'
manufacturing plant as a lumber
or cotton mill It has its raw
material its motor power and its
manufactured product Our boys
and girls are the raw material
its motor power is in the home
yes the home— the first and the
most important institution that
God established on the earth
We had good homes in Friendship
neighborhood father and boys
were breadwinners mother and
girls the homebuilders
“Results of over 40 years of
faithful work aided by a good
community we gave to the world
eight preachers two doctors two
lawyers over twenty teachers-
nearly all of them first class-
one of them taught in a church
From Sam P Hale and get a fit like
you have always wanted We have
the big samples and will put them in a
model to show you just how your suit
will look Our best advertisement is
that we sell more tailored clothes than
any one in town Step in today and

ers in high schools Former
members of Friendship Sunday
school are now living in eight dif-
ferent States Our preachers
sent out are preaching in four
States This writer visited Tex-
as some years ago and in a Sun-
day school there he found the
superintendent and all the teach-
ers but one had once been mem-
bers of Friendship Sunday school
So our work abides I have nev-
er heard of one that has fallen
by the wayside
“More results: No man or boy
member of Friendship Sunday
school was ever arrested for vio-
lating the laws of our country
nor was there ever a murder sui-
cide or divorce in that commun-
ity Our aim was to give the
world a class of men and women
