THE GRAPE JUICE STATESMAN '
I' The resignation of William Jennings Bryan from the Secretary of State
portfolio looks like a good riddance It ought to be a great relief to the
people of the United States and to President Wilson It puts Bryan just
where he belongs In the face of another power which may be at any day
an empty nation be quits like a spoiled child and is off to hia bowl of milk
hit grape Juice and his “dove of poace" He has displayed the real “yellow"
that is in him He quit his best friend when if he had the ability and was
capable of giving any advice at the time when it was most needed If his
services as a diplomat were of consequence he could certainly have rendered
more effectual service to the “dear people” in office than he could on the
outside as a private citizen
No this is not what he wanted History tells us that it is he who has
heretofore issued the ultimatums to his party and to his enemies He has a
mania for either ruling or putting his friends to route He can be nothing
but boss
When he went against President Wilson he found a man of brains and
of opinions of his own this never has suited Bryan and ever since the
Cabinet was organized there have been rumors of him resigning Spoiled
child that he is he has been Anally forced to show his hand and at a most
inopportune moment he “blew up”
The revolution of Mexico will be tame to the amount of stink and
stir that he will try to create with his wails and bellows to the public
The two once apparently great statesmen Roosevelt and Bryan are
proving to be ancient demagogues of modern times
A WORD TO THE MERCHANT
There is not a merchant in Nowata but what would like to secure a
large share of the business from the people who live in the country and
in the smaller surrounding towns
At every meeting of the Merchants' Association many ideas are ad-
vanced as to the best method to pursue to get this business
Very few if any of these ideas have ever been put into effect The
real work so far has never advanced any further than the talking point
It is a well satisAed fact a town the size of Nowata will never survive
and be prosperous under present conditions and the merchant who dispates
this has but to look at his bank book for the convincing argument You
have got to do something more than to just talk it over
There has been a time when the oil business was in full bloom that
this was not necessary but it will require no argument to convince you tin
these days are over
Any merchant can survive and make money when he haw all the
business that he ran attend to when the trade merely comes in asks to- sue
u certain article makes the purchase and pays you the cash and walks out
It did not require any salesmanship to sell the goods and' no previous
publicity was necessary to get him into your store Under conditions such
as these there was no excuse for any merchant not making a good showing
There was a time when conditions as above stuted existed in Nowata
It did not require modern merchandising methods to secure a sufficient
volume of business You done business simply for the reason that there wav
plenty of business to do
The time has arrived when the test hus got to be applied There can
be no more just merely “sitting around” The simple fact that you haw
been in Nowata for a long time will not relieve the situation There w
no longer use of trying to fool yourself You are facing a situation that
has reached past the jollying point
In every town there are always a few live business men who are al-
ways using every effort to get more business They are ready to- help in
any manner or form thut will be to the best interest of the community
You always know that when you carry a petition to them asking for a gift
of money that you will get it There are others who just merely sweat
the game a dollar in their hands means a dollar out of circulation
Whatever is done to relieve the situation will have to be done by tin-
live ones It's up to us to solve the problem and the Nowata Stas- is reuV
to do its part
SUNDAY CLOTHES
Thirty big strong husky men stood on the banks of a pond mair
Dothan Ala and watched a boy drown Not a “man” made a move to
help save that boy from a watery grove
The thirty “men” on shore explained that they had on their SUndby
clothes and did not wish to get them soiled that there wasn’t time to slip
their Sunday clothes off before plunging ire
A wave of indignation has since swept over the little village of Dochan
threatening to drive these Sunday clothes fellows out of town
BRYAN TELLS
OF WAR EVILS
By United Press
Washington June 18 — In a state-
ment made public today William Jen-
nings Bryan who recently resigned
I Secretary of State called attention
to the evils of the- present world war
as affecting neutrals and non-cembut-ants
The former cabinet officer called at-
tention to the terrible Sufferings of
the women and children in the' coun-
tries at war and dwelt a£ length on
that phase of the conflict - He also
called attention to the fact that the
present war bore most heavily on
those who had absolutely nothing to
do with the starting of hostilities
The nations at war must just so
far as possible bear its burdens and
not shift them to the neutrals Is his
contention In closing Mr Bryan said
that President Wilson had a magni-
ficent opportunity a held as mediator
in the great struggle in Europe

" Henry Ford announces hat he will have sold his 300009 machines by
July 1st instead of August 1st and so purchasers are beund to get the
promised rebate If most any other fellow than Henry Ford handed os
such an announcement we'd hand him our advertising rate card? but we

Nobody's sweetheart is ugly Wives should always be sweethearts
We have oftened wondered if there really wasn’t some tightwads whose
conscience really hurt when they walked out in the front yard and picked
up a “free daily” that they never contributed one cent to help maintain
Let’s sand a message in to the homes of every resident of Nowata
County Offer them the same inducements that other towns are offering
Fix up the roads so that it wilt be a pleasure for him to come here to trade
— o —
Why is it that every town in the world has a few men who are engaged
in offering goods for sale that never spend a dime for newspaper advertis-
ing while there is not a successful merchant in the world but what owes
his success to the advertising end of his business?
— o
Suppose you lived in the country and received every week papers from
the three largest surrounding towns Say that it was about equal dis-
tance from where you lived to these towns and as you had the cash to
pay for your purchases it would make no material difference which one
you made your regular weekly visit to Wouldn't you naturally look the
papers over to see what was on special at these various towns Suppose
one of these papers was filled with good live crisp ads of its merchants
giving a well descriptive write-up of the merchandise offered and quoting
you the price The others carried only a few ads and they were of the
mere invitation character Which town would likely get your business?
w O'"
If you have a message to send the farmer the Nowata Weekly Star
will carry it The Star is read by more people in Nowata County than
all the other papers combined There is just as much difference between
the Star and some of the others as there would be In placing the window
