TAX FERRETS ARE ENJOINED
A case of more than local in-
terest was filed Saturday in Dis-
trict Court of this County The
First National Bank and the
Merchants & Planters National
Bank of Davis Okla through
their attorneys Fagan & Ken-
drick filed suit and prayed for
injunction restraining the County
Treasurer and Tax Ferret from
further proceeding in the levy or
assessment or collecting of taxes
against them The application
was prayed for on the grounds
that the matter at issue had been
passed upon by the Board of
Equalization and its finding was
final that all property subject
to taxation had beeu rendered
that this law under which the
officials were proceeding was un-
constitutional and void for the
reason that the power attempted
to be vested in the County
Treasurer was too uncertain and
indefinite in its terms and that
said officer was not a Court or
tribunal within the meaning of
the Constitution so that he could
pass upon property rights and
for the further reason that the
appellate power granted to the
County Judge was beyond the
jurisdiction of the County Court
as prescribed in the Constitution
Judge McMillan granted the tem-
porary order The hearing on
making the same perpetual will
be watched with nolittle interest
owing to the widespread discus-
8iou the Ferret law has already
received through the newspapers

Treasurer J C Lindsay began
issuing attachments ou delin-

he gets through they’ll wish they
had paid Mr Lindsay says the
law makes it his duty to collect
these taxes and he is going to
collect them Those who know
him do not doubt it
The last legislature changed
the time for payiug taxes in fu-

OAK RIDGE
Effilor Davis Notts:
I write yu it few lines to let
you know 'that tte have had a
fine rain consequently the
farmers are wearing smiles so
pleasant that it reminds one of
a big slice of watermelon
A word now about our Chil-
dren’s Day on the 16th The
day was fine for the occasion
The program was all that couhl
be expected aind 1 must say that
the childreu executed their parts
to their credit Miss Ka hrine
Williams deserves credit for the
excellent training of the children
After the rendering of the pro-
gram the time came for dinner
Our Superiiteudeul gathered all
the children that were on the
ground and formed a line uud
marched them to the table whicli
as well supplied with good
thincs to eat Bro Freeman in-
voked God’s blessing Then the
feast which lasted until every-
body hollered McDuff or enough
Being a little deaf 1 could not
tell which word was the finish
We had quite a ' mwd of friends
from your city aud elsewhere
Come again friends and next
I ime don’t leave the Editor be-
hind After dinner Bro Free
m in pleached an excellent ser-
mon to parents aud children
Bro Cage also made n splendid
tak All passed off quietly Save
one inatanen Now as 1 said
our table was loaded with good
things to eat but there was a
juvenile Goliath hailing from
Davis that could not satisfy his
appetite without a fight — came
out for that purpose We
searched our lunch baskets but
could not find a fight ifl any But
the Goliath after looking around
soon found what he came after
He ran upon a little stripling
barefooted David The would-be
Goliath uftcr much tantalizing
induced David to the shady
nooksnftlie valley David did
his work well putting a carmen
color to the eyes a hue of blue
black mingled with carmen
over liia face
For fear of length 1 will close
asking you to correct the geo-

Musi Have Flags in Schools
Guthrie Okla May 12 — The
following circular letter has
been issued by State Superin-
tendent of Instruction E D
Cameron :
“To County Superintendents snd
Teachers :
“The Session of Laws of 1905
make it obligatory upon every
board of education to every
school district within Oklahoma
to own and display within the
school house a United States flag
and imposes a penalty of not less
than $10 nor more than $100
upon each member of said board
for non-compliance with the pro-
visions of this law I sincerely
believe that this law ought to be
euforced but something more
than this is necessary If our
children do not know the history
of the flag aud do not know what
this emblem means to our peo-
ple there would be no particu-
lar advantage in having the flag
in each school house as provided
by the law mentioned
“1 think that every child in
the State should be told some-
thing concerning the historic
building situated at No' 289
Arch street Piladelphia in
which the first flag of the Uuired'
States of America was made by
Betsy Ross and subsequently
adopted bv Congress June 14
1777
“In harmony therefore with
a worthy custom which is gener-
ally prevalent amoug all of the
states of the Union I hereby
recommend that Monday June
14th 1909 the 182nd anniversary
of the bictii of the flag be set
apart and observed as flag day
by all the schools of the State
that happen to be in session at
that time 1 think it would alsoi
be well for ull of the county I
superintendents to take up this
work and arrange for special
programs wherever possible A
little later we hope to be able to
send out special literature on
this subject which will 'be sent
free to all teachers who may wish
suggestions on this subject”
