A good rain fell here Sunday
Lee McEuen is in Bennington
this week
B R Peden came down from
Konowa Sunday and remained
until Tudsday
Cotton is being damaged by
the heavy rains we have been
having the past few days
J H Brown who has been
in Colorado the past year or
more has returned to Lehigh
A very wet damp rain fell here
Tuesday It came in car load
lots and once again the ground
is soaked thoroughly
B J Swaffar will at once be-
gin the erection of a residence in
the northwest part of town It
will be 28x28 two stories high
It is comforting to see our tax-
payers out building cross-walks
across almost impassable places
This is what Boone Williams is
doing to-day
The lawn social given by the
Alter Society at the home of
Mrs Joseph Grilley Monday
night was well attended and
pronounced a great success
Leander McAlister and Will
Menton returned to Tecumseh
Monday after a three weeks
visit at home They are attend-
ing a business college at
Tecumseh
Could the Indians be allowed
to dispose of their surplus land
at this time thousands of good
farmers from adjoining states
would flock in here and purchase
farms and improve the country
It is to be hoped that congress
will pass a bill removing these
restrictions
Tuesday when lightning was
booming about town one bolt
struck a house in the north part
of town occupied by a colored
family A colored woman was
knocked senseless and the house
caught fire Neighbors extin-
guished the Are and the woman
revived but she died the follow-
ing morning from her injuries
At the meeting of James Hol-
land Lodge No 34 K of P
Tuesday night the following
officers were elected: ' Boone

There should be a better turn-
out to the Commercial Club
meetings1 The Club can be
made of great-value to the town
of Lehigh and every person in
the town should join the Club
and assist in making Lehigh a
bigger and better town These
meetings are held every Friday
night over the Lehigh National
Bank
While the people in the North
and East are being prostrated
dnd many dying from the ex-
cessive heat here in the Indian
Territory we are having delight-
ful weather regular summer
resort weather One can imag-
ine himself up in the high
mountains where the cool
breezes would fan you to sleep
The Indian Territory can beat
the world for fine climate
We admire the good people of
-Atoka It has more hustlers to
f the square foot than any town in
the Indian Territory Two years
ago we would not have coughed
up a dollar for an acre of ground
in that measley old town The
old moss backs there (and they
are some of God’s noblemen)
woke up from a long sleep and
began to hustle Today Atoka
is growing and is fast becom-
ing one of the best little towns
in the Territory It was all
brought ' about by its people
1 ' orgonizing themselves into alive
commercial club The club put
dp money and spent it freely
advertising the town They are
getting there with both feet
We say three cheers for Atoka
and its band of hustlers
Will Begin Grading
A representative of thfe Ex-
press had an interview in Okla-
homa City yesterday with Dorset
Carter preident of the Canadian
Valley & Western Railway Co
in which Mr Carter said: “You
may say to the people of Chick-
asea that we shall begin work on
i our road in thirty days Our
plans are progressing nicely and
we are now in a position to say
positively that work will begin
within this time”
Grading is to begin on the east
end of the line Lehigh has al-
ready raised the entire amouut
of her bonus The express
learned from a citizen of Ada
that that city had already sub-
scribed $17000 of the $25000 re-
quired by her Other towns
along the line are also coming
up with their subscriptions
It is reported that an effort is
being made by Lawton to divert
the road to that city bringing it
through Ninnekah
There still remains about
$9000 to be raised in Chickasha
before we are assured of this
road It must be raised at once
—Chickasha Express

A special to the Dallas News

If there is any chance to boom
business boom it
Don’t pull a long face down
and look as tho you had a sour
stomach Hold up your head
smile and look for better things
Hide your little hammer and
try to speak well of others no
matter how small' you know
yourself to be When a stranger
drops in jolly him tell him this
is the greatest town on earth
and it is Don’t discourage him
by speaking ill of your neigh-
bors Lead him to believe die has at
last struck a place where white
people live Don’t knock
Help yourself along by becominjg
popular and push your" friends
with you It’s dead easy
Be a good fellow and soon you
will have a profession of follow-
ers No man ever helped him-
self by knocking other people
down in character or business
No man ever got rich by try-

Inalienable for 21 Years -
Last Saturday at South Mc-
Alester Judge Clayton held that
Choctaw freedmen’s holdings
were inalienable for twenty-one
years ' '
Three-fourths of the freed-
men’s lands have already been
sold The loss is heavy to
speculators '
The court holds that the last
treaty did not take precedence
over the Atoka agreement in
reference to freedmen The
point has long worried land buy-
