A breakwater, approximately one-
half mile long, has been constructed
by the Samoset Oil company to protect
its Cimarron river bed oil properties
from tbe swift current of the stream
at bigb water periods. Tbis was an un-
usually expensive undertaking even in
tbe oil field but the company believe
they could not invest in any better in-
surance proposition.
Always have the floods in the Cim-
arron played havoc with the river bed
properties, tlhe annual loss amounting
well into the hundreds of thousands of
dollars Heretofore, as a rule, each
derrick has been protected separately
in attempts to turn the water from the
oil properties, and the Samoset is the
first to build a protection on anything
like a big scale. This breakwater is
wooden, built of heavy timber and
planks and should withstand the floods
for a long time. The posts and sup-
ports are placed below the quicksands
of the stream.
In building the protection for a river
bed rig on the Cimarron it is necessary
to drive twenty-four piling deep In the
sand, or a total of sixty for each rig.
By building the long, high breakwater,
however- the Samoset company elimi-
nates a great amount of this work.
The protection for a rig Is constructed
V-shape, splitting tbe current and
sending it away from the rig.
In order to do this pile driving, each
of the river bed operating companies
maintains a pile driver machine on a
barge which may be moved up and
