No "Overconfidence."
In his address t i the O no re
publican committee on July 27,
Mr. Talt said:
"We must know, those . f us
who face the facts, that ve are
meeting a large, strone P'rtj,
headed bj an able, forcef-il and
experienced candidate, and w<
should be exceedmglr imprudent
tf we belittle the forces be'iim'
fcim and the resources of «n able
leader."
It is not likely that the repub-
lican politicians will lose th.
battle by "i verconfidence." Al
though they are making proud
claims in every section of the
cmntry, it is known that they
have never been in such a staU
of panic as they are now.
pinn \ 'ii campaign purposes;
th^re otr, \ iore would be nothing
to publish id that line.
We also c ill his attention to
the fai t tn.it Mr. Bryan and the
d-movra'ic national platform
pledged tli.it at least two weeks
before the election there will be
published a statement of all con-
tributtous made of one hundred
dollars or m ire, so that the peo-
ple iH*y set *-ho is paying the
elic ion excuses before they ^o
to llie polls to vote.
An effort has been made to se-
cure legislation requiring pub-
licity as to campaign contribu
tions and expenditures; but the
republican leaders, i rn in the
face of an indignant public, re-
fused to consent to a law which
would compel honesty in elec
tions. When the matter was
brought up iu tlu> r.cetit republi
can national convention, thr
plank was repudiated by a vote
of 880 to 94. Here, too, Mr.
1 aft has bee u driven to a polo.; ze
for his convention and tj diclare
himself iu favor of a pub'icitv
law; and yet, if you will read
what he says upon this subject,
yon will find that his promise
falls far >rt ot the riquirements
of the sitUiiioii. He says:
"If I am elected president, I
shall urge upon congress, with
every hope of Miccess. that a law
be passed requiring the filing, in
u federal office, of n statement of
the contributions received by
committees aud candidates in
elections for members of congress
and in such other elections as
are constitutionally within the
control ol congress "
I shall not embarrass him by
asking him upon what he bases
his hope of success; it is certainly
not on any encouragement tie li is
received from republican leaders.
It is sufficient to sa that if bis
hopes were realized—if, in spite
of the adverse action ol his cod-
vention, he should succeed in
securing- the enactmeut of the
very law which he lavors, it
would tfive but partial relief. Me
has read the democratic platform;
not only his language, but his
evident alarm, indicates that be
has read it carefully. He even
had before him the action of the
democratic national committee in
interpreting and applying that
platform; and yet, he fails to say
that he favors the publication of
the contributions before the elec

well represented by "The Woman in . "" ^
From Oklahoma, where Goyer-
nor 11 isKell presides over the ex-
chequer of t.ie Bryan campaign
funds, comes the first intelligence
as to v*bai the Democratic cam-
paign ni.m,igersexpect to do with
the campaign fund. The Guth-
rie Letiuer, the organ of the Ok-
lahoma Democracy, makes it just
as clear as big-, black letters can
nake it, that the treasurer of
the committee is prepared to
furnish a written guarantee with
evci j u-ceipt for contiibutions
that the funds will not be wasted
in a lost cause.
"Twenty states," declare this
si mi-official forecast, "will go to
Bryan without a contest." Among
these tweuiy states already sur-
lendeieil to the Nebraska candi-
date are Colorado, Delaware,
Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri,
Nebraska and Oklahoma. But
even at tlur, the count is tilty-six
electoral votes short, and the
Democrats must put up something
of a light lor that number. So
here is w here they expect to make |
a killing with the campaign fundi
with "but little opposition."]
Kansas, California, Indiana,!
Wyoming, Connecticut. South I
Dakota aud West Virginia, and)
with all these states safely gam- j
ered into tlie Democratic store-!
house, Mr. Bryan has two more j
votes than he actually needs.
Therefore, why coatinue tbej
unequal conflict? Let's put out
the lights and go home. It is all
over but tlic shouting and Okla-
