Tho roar of natural gae, most
pleasing music in the ears of all Ok-
lahomans, was heard last night for
tho first time within the limits of
tho city of Shawnee. The gas did
roar and the people did shout, loud
and long. It was a wonderful dem-
onstration of enthusiasm, no less
than a wonderful demonstration of
the wonderful natural fuel.
There was a slight hitch in the
lighting of the gas that was deliv-
ered into Che high standplpe in
Woodland park, on account of the
wire to which the torch was attached
being pulled from the pulley wheel.
Thousands of people gathered in the
immediate vicinity 'and up and down
on both sides of Broadway, Bell and
adjacent streets for many blocks.
At 7:30 two big siren whistles at
the electric light plant sounded,
which was a signal that the show
was about to come off. Hundreds of
people began to appear at this sound,
and they continued coming until
after 8 o'clock. Two other signals
were shrieked by the whtatle before
8 o'clock, and shortly after that hour
Mayor Stearns shot a Roman candle
into the gas that was then pouring
from the pipe, and it leaped Into
flame. A very low pressure was on
at first, but It was steadily Increased
until the roar could be heard all
over the city. Perhaps forty or fifty
pounds pressuro were on when at its
highest.
The gas flame was wonderful to be-
hold. * A pillar of Incandescence,
spreading out foather-llke at tho top,
throwing off an immense heat that
could be felt a block away. The
light was so Intense that it mad*? a
great section of the city as bright
as day.
About 9 o'clock the gas was cut
down to low pressure, and burned
slowly all night. This morning work-
men removed the temporary pipe
and placed the scene of the exhibi-
tion in tho same condition as before.
Natural gas is now a living reality
in Shawnee. In a few days hundreds
of Shawnee homes will be lighted
and heated by this fuel that nature
supplies so bountifully to Oklahoma.
All consumers will be attended to as
soon as they can be reached, the alrn
of the company being to treat all
alike.
