A Letter recently received from
Congressman W. M. Springer of
Illinois; "I am in hearty sympathy
ith every lawful movement having
for its object the opening of the
Cherokee Strip. It is a shame and
reproach to our government that so
many acres of rich and fertile land
should have been kept so long from
occupation by the homeseekers of
the country. It will be no fault of
mine if this condition continues.
Every consideration of the public
wellfare requires that these lands
should become at once the home of
our people.1'
There is a mound or tmtte in the
southern part of the Arapahoe reser-
vation, which the Indians believe to
be haunted. It covers an acre of
ground and rises abruptly to a height
of a hundred feet. Surmounting the
hill is a turret of stone, and rising on
the turret is a huge boulder which
from some points of view takes the
form of a robed man. It takes but
a slight stretch of the Indian's fancy

ROCK ISLAND'S FUTURE.
New York, Jan. 11.—A big deal
is pending. Few are in the secret.
The deal, however, is to put the vast
resources of the Flaglers and Rock-
fellers at the back of f resident Cable
of the Rock Island to lay out Jay
Gould. Boiled down into the brief-
est compass the situation is repre-
sented to be just this: The Hock
Island tracks are to be extended in-
Texas. They are to meet the
Missouri Kansas and Texas at or
near Ft. Worth, and thence over the
Missouri, Kansas and Texas R. 1?.
Hoi k Island trains are to go straight
to the Southern coast. The Missouri,
Kansas & Texas is owned by the
Standard Oil magnates. Thus comes
a natural combine. The affliction,
mutually beneficial, is likewise
mutually needed.
The Rock Island company suffered
two substantial loses last year. One
was in the death of David Dows,
whose name in the property's direc-

It is the general opinion, based on
movemencs by the department ai
Washington, that the Y\ ichita reser
vation will be thrown open W- the
same time with the Cheyenne and
Arapahoe lands. It should bo done
that way, anyhow, to avoid such a
tremendous rush.—Minstrel.
The Big mill at Oklahoma City is
running full blast now. Mr. Jones
is buying 1000 bushels of wheat a
day from the farmers and this does
not supply his demand. lie has
turned out as high as 30,000 pounds
of flour in one day. This is the
grandest enterprise in the territory.
Tiik people of Nebraska are re-
joicing in the knowledge that James
E. Boyd by the authority of the U.

all they could to thwart the will ot
the people of Nebraska, It is re-
freshing to know that the IT. S Su-

In the end the fact ma\ he
Gould encroachment. In the Rocke-
fellers, President Cable will have the
Wall street relationships, too, quite
equal to those that lapsed in David
Dow's death and R. P. Flower's pol-
itics. Great thing^are accomplished
for the Rockefellers; great things for
the Hock Island.
Only the vaguest hints have so far
been heard in wrtll street of this
pending deal.
wili be found out to be that the Rock
Island has quietly laid out its line
into Texas. The plan determined
upon is to resume work in the Indian
Territory-the Rock Island is about
half way across the territory-and
proceeds in almost an air line south
to Fort Worth. Ite importance is
not for the Rock Island and Missouri
Kansas & Texas roads alone, howev-
er-not by any means. It mean* much
to every system in the southwest.

But Chaddick ajntinued to smart
under the fancied affront and deter-

a comfortable fort ine himself, and
with a deal of hustling among Minn-

has finally succeeded in raising the
money to lift theildebtedness on the

Philadelphia crowd control. Now
however, Chaddic): has apparently
turned the tables on the men who
have been his enemies, and lie has
forced a meeting which is being held
in Philadelphia to day in which the
future of the Choctaw will be deci-

with no little interest among our
