LOCKING THE ItAKN DOOK
It is possible perhaps it is even
probable that many of the office-
seeking democrats of Carter county
have read the story printed in the
old blue-back speller about the farm-
er who locked his barn door after
his horse had been stolen.
i To such It might be well advised
to study the moral contained in the
story and then ponder a bit upon
the meeting which the republicans
htld at the county courthouse in
Ardmore. Saturday of last week.
The chairman of the republican
county central committee says that
the republicans have more than a
fighting chance of changing the com-
plexion of the administration in this
county at the November election.
Without making this assertion a
mooted question' it might be well for
the ones who really care to keep
Carter county in the democrat col-
umn to awaken to a realization of tho
fact that the "enemy" has put a full
ticket in the field for the first time
since statehood.
And it might be well for the local
democracy to also take note of the
fact that the republican ticket is so
arranged that It will appeal strongly
to the women voters of the county
and also to the Independent voters
among the male element.
That the republican organization
means business was evidenced strong-
ly by the words of a republican law-
yer of Ardmore who In addressing
the meeting Saturuay advised all re-
publicans to keep their hands off the
democratic primaries to stay away
from the democratic scraps on pri-
mary day so that they would not
lake any chances of nullifying or
jeopardizing their voles as republi-
cans of true and fast color on the
day of ths general election.
Another speaker before the conven-
tion asserted that there were fully
500 republican voters In Ardmore
alone who had heretofore beeu clas-
sified and recognized as democrats.
That means 500 votes taken from
the democrat ticket and it means
500 votes gone over to the republican
ticket which totals 1000 votes taken
from the standard democratic major-
ity which Carter county has rolled
up in the past.
The republican ticket in Carter
county h no longer problematical.
It is now a problem.' It is a problem
which can be solved but it will not
solve itself.

Hence the Lever act became nec-
essary because the big business in-
terests unsatisfied with the honest
tolls which co-operation was bring-
ing them began to Use ue leverage
of the art of co-working to boost
prices of commodities to the danger
line. Co-operation the good spirit
has been pampered and petted anj
spoiled until he has developed into
an evil genii which the poor fisher-
man may find himself compelled to
again bottle up and cast Into the
sea.
If this is to become necessary is a
matter which IS entirely in the hands
of the business men of the United
States.
The business world must regulate
its own future success realizing that
a satisfied a contented and pleased
consumer is the greatest asset. The
business world must get away from
the co-operatlon-of-th-few-tothe-detrl-ment-of-the-many
idea and return to
the old line of honest competition
without trade restriction if it would
remain a part of the common world
In which live the common people.
UECxmvnoN day
Yesterday was Decoration day. It
was the day upon which all should
have given at least a few moments
tender thought in memory of the
boys who laid down their lives that
the people of this country should
continue to live a free and indepen-
dent people untrammeled by the iron
cross of kings unhampered by the
steel shack lea of despotism.
It was the day upon which the
older ones should have strewn em-
blems of loving remembrance upon
the lowly graves In which repose
the mouldering clay of the brave who
fought in the war between the states
for that which they deemed right
and honorable and Just. It was a day
upon which factional bitterness of
memory should be forgotten with
"love and tears' for the blue tears
and love for the gray." It was a day
upon which the people of the north
forgot there ever was a north and
the people of the south forgot there
ever was a south while the great
American people bowed their heads
and prayed for the eternal peace and
happiness of the brave American hoys
whose blood helped to wash away
the sins of a despot-ridden world.

Better not laugh at Ihe republican
organization In this county boys. The
republicans at Little Rock Ark. or:

democrats over there have not yet
regained the firm seat in the saddle
which they had held for years prior
to the "organization."
Now that women have a vote we

noticed that while women may herald
their meetings with a whole lot of
fuss: and feathers when they once

keep on stirring until the pot boils

to Hoover and of the fixing of the
the price of wheat. He prays for-
giveness if ho did make a mistake
in introducing Into the senate the
duplicate of the McLemore resolu-
tion to keep American ships off the
seas.
Senator Gore introduced the Mc-
Lemore resolution February 25 1916.
The Congressional Record page 3120
64th congress first session will re-
fresh your memory on war history
that should be remembered.
The McLemore resolution was kill-
ed In house and senate by the pa-
triotic majority. The McLemore res-
olution would have closed " the mar-
kets of Europe against American
wheat American cotton American
meat. American everything. The
McLemore resolution would have been
a white flag of cowardice had It
passed.
If the McLemore resolution had
passed the farmer could not have
gotten fifty cents a bushel for his
wheat nor six cents a pound tor his
cotton. America is the granary for
Europe. America Is a world market-
place. To stop -the commerce of
America is to wreck the farms
wreck the mines and wreck the in-
dustries of America.
The war is over. It Is not neces-
sary to remind Americans that the
McLemore resolution cringingly sub-
mitting to tho demands of Germany
and its rampant submarines would
have degraded American patriotism.
The commercial aspect of the Mc-
Lemore resolution and the effect on
the pocketbooks and the lives of
Oklahoma farmers had It passed is
the thing to be considered here.
It is reasonable to assume that a
man who boasts of unflagging in
terest In the welfare of the farmer
would be eager always for top mar
ket prices. The McLemore resolu
tion came at a time whe ncotton wa
selling at six cents a pound with
no buyers because the country was
afraid of the U-boats. If the Mc
Lemore resolution had paaeed the
house and the senate there would
have been no world market. "With
out a world market the crops would
have rotted In storage waiting for a
price with a cent of profit In It.
