A HUMORIST
lo our information the Wagoner
Record is edited by a woman or. as
some would say it a lady. Said lady we are
pleased to observe is extraordinarily human for one
of her sex being gifted w ith a sense of humor. There
is a plentiful supply not to say a plethoral abundance
of male humorists abroad in the land; but the only
lady humorist of whom we have any accurate knowl-
edge is the one who used to be Miss Carolyn Wells
I hut became so serious a little while ago that she got
I married since which time we fear .she has quit writ-
I ing those delightful thi;is in verse and prose which
made her famous.
Hut we are consoled. This lady editor at Wagoner
not only is a humorist being able to make as well as
to see a joke but she has also the courage of her
convictions and upon occasion can and does express
them; and in sn doing she avoids calling a spade a
.shovel.
"We dashed off last week" writes the lady editor
in her newspaper "a ten-line editorial complimenting
a number of our brightest boys and extending to
them a warm welcome home from the wrecked and
shell-torn battlefields on the campus of our great
state A. X- M. College at Stillwater."
The boys and their parents saw the joke the lady
editor continues. It appears that "one Peter Reed"
tailed to see it hut could see in that little ten-Iitier
only a.wiltul reflection upon the young men home for
the school holidays and an underlying llunisni in ihe
editorial soul. In fact it seems that Mr. Reed re-
garded the unlabeled joke as an iilsiiit to the military
arm of our benevolent government.
"All of which" says the lady editor in her current 1
issue "furnishes us with abundant evidence of the
truth of a deep-seated .suspicion that has long found l
lodgment in our mind and that is that I'eter Reed
mayor of "Wagoner Wagoner county Oklahoma I' j
S. A is just a common ordinary damn fool."

campaign for equal suffrage in this state. A certain
male suffragette so to speak was lalking with a com-

topic was the anti-suffrage effort feebly put forth in
the campaign by a tall young woman from Washing-

Wilson Says There
Should be Science
Of Government
In accepting membership in the
Italian Academy of Science at
Rome last Saturday President Wil-
son spoke as follows and the brief
address is so illuminative of the pres-
ident's life ideals and .so different
front the ordinary addresses of a
chief executive that The Ardmoreitc
has reserved it for the editorial page:
Your majesty Mr. President
and Gentlemen of the Academy:
I have listened with the pro-
foundest appreciation to the
beautiful address which you
have been kind enough to deliv-
and 1 want to say how deep-
ly I appreciate the honor you
have conferred upon me in per-
mitting me to become a member
oi mis ureal academy because
there is a serenity in which the
continuity of human thought is
;n the care of bodies like this.
There is a serenity a long view
on the part of science which
seems to be of no age. but lo
carry human thought along
from generation to generation
treed from the elements of pas-
sion. Therefore it is. I dare say
with all men of science a matter
of profound regret an (Miainc
that science should in a nation
which has made science its
boast have been put to such
dishonorable uses in the recent
war. l-.vcry just mind must con-
demn those who so debased the
studies of men of science as to
use them against humanity and
therefore it is part of your task
and id' ours to reclaim science
from this disgrace to show that
she is devoted to the advance-
ment and interest of humanity
and not lo its embarrassments
and destruction.
1 w ish very much that I could
believe that I was in some sense
a worthy representative of the
men of science of the United
States. cannot claim to be in
any proper sense a man of
science. My studies have been
in the field of politics all my life
and while politics may by cour-
tesy be called a science it is a
science which is often practiced
without rule and is very hard to
set up .standards for so that one
can be sure that one is steering
tiie right course.
At the same time while per-
haps there is no science of gov-
ernment there ought to be. 1
dare say in government itself the
spirit of science that is to say
the spirit of disinterestedness
the spirit of seeking after the
truth so far as the truth is ready
to he applied lo human circum-
stances. Because after all the
problem of. politics is to satisfy
men in the arrangement of their
lives is to realize for them so
far as possible the objects which
they have entertained genera-
tion after generation and have
seen so often postponed.
Therefore 1 have often
thought that the universities
and academies of science have
their part in simplifying the
problems of political affairs ami
thus assisting t0 advance human
lile along the lines of political
structure and political action.
It is very delightful to draw
apart for a liltle while into this
quite place and feel .again that
familiar touch of thought and
knowledge which it has been my
privilege to know familiarly
through so great a parr id" my
lite. If I have coihe out on a
more adventurous and disorder-
ed stage I hope that I have not
lost the recollection and mav in
sonic sense he assisted bv coun-
cils such as sours.

ber enrolled the first quarter. This
is due to the fact that less than 40
