A stale board of education is created
consisting of the slate superintendent
'if public Instruction, state auditor and
attorney general; and the state super-
intendent la designated as the presi-
dent of the board with authority to
appoint a secretary and stenographer,
the former at t2,000 and the latter at
$1,200 per annum.
With the excitement and Interest
Incident to the organization work of
both branches of the legislature a
thing of the past and many of the
numerous applicants for positions gone |
home, and the new employes busy
trying to acquaint themselves with
the duties of their official career dur-
ing the suasion, the two chambers
present a decidedly changed appear-
ance as the member* gather for the
opening of their real work.
Thn first bill to be Introduced In tho
senate was by Franklin and Rdwarda
of the senate and Miller of the house.
It provides for the appropriation of
$<1115,800 for the support and mainte-
nance of the state university and for
the erection and repair of buildings.

only, while the other exempts cotton,

Repeal of the so-called mortgage tax
law i# proposed in a bill by Cordell of
the senate and McCoIlister of the
bouse.
One of the first measure* Introduced
in the house wa# a concurrent reso-
lution by Representative Luther Har-
rison of Seminole, calling for an offi-
cial investigation of the state school
land department. The resolution pro-
vide# for the appointment of a com-
mittee of five, three from the house
and two from the senate. The com-
mittee so appointed is empowered to
employ an expert accountant to assist
In the Jartstlzation. His salary is
not to exceed $8 00 per day.

Lemon, prohibiting the use of nar-
row tired vehicles on the public roads.
Miller, extending the time of pay-
ment of all taxes, which become due
on December 15, to April 1, 1915.

agricultural extension work between
the agricultural colleges of the various
states, which receive federal aid.
McMecban of the senate and Peebly,
Wright and Young of the house,
amending the consolidation act of 1913
so aa to make it apply to county
offices In Oklahoma.
Dunn, defining usury, regulating In-
terest and the filing of chattel mort-
gages.
Maxey, Increasing the number of su-
preme court Justices from five to nine.
Brown, exempting cotton, wheat,
corn and other farm products from
taxation.
Dunn, exempting cotton from taxa-
tion so long aa held by the grower.

tee on employes selected the seven
provided for by the senate instruc-
tions. The successful applicants are
Carl F. Creninger, Misses Erma Ire
ton, Pearl McConnell, Erma Krauss,
Susan Sturgeon, Mollle Powers and
Mrs. Nellie Pool.
Bills proposing stringent legislation
designed to suppress the illegal traffic
In liquor In Oklahoma, and to correct
certain phases of the divorce evil are
included In a list of twenty-seven new
measures Introduced in the house.
A Joint resolution by Peery of Lat-
imer, authorizes the submission of n
constitutional amendment, which
would give the legislature the author-
ity of paaning a law, establishing a
state insurance fund for workmen.
The fund would be made up by com-
pulsory contribution from employers
and employes. It Is another measure
dealing with the subject of a work-
men's compensation law. The reso-
lution asks that the amendment be
submitted at a special election to be
called for August 5, 1915.
Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
The members of both houses, and
all state officials were guests at the
annual banquet of the Chamber of
Commerce, attended by nearly one
thousasd. The banquet was followed
by a program on the 'gridiron" order.

Cotton shipments out of Ardmore
*re heavier now than they have been
at any time this season. It seems that
those who expected cotton to go to 8
cent# have become discouraged and
are selling at the price offered.
Whisky flowed in the gutter of a
"hickasha street when six barrels of
whisky were spilled by Oscar Simpson,
the county attorney of Grady county.

on and team ten miles west of this
i city.
A Grady county farmer Saturday
and the sheriff of Grady county on
Monday was the chance that Hodge
Bailey, the new sherifT of Grady coun-
ty, has Just gone through. Bailey Is
the first farmer sheriff of Grady
i county.
Because he could not sell his cot-
ton crop, Adolph Janda, 35 years of
age, a Bohemian farmer who had been
living on his farm three miles south
of Anadarko, swallowed over fifty tab-
lets of chloride of mercury and lived
ten days.
A solid train of thirty-eight cars
loaded with three thousand bales of
cotton left Ada last week over the
M., K. & T. railroad for Galveston,
consigned to Liverpool, England. The
cotton was shipped by W. K. Chaney
to Bushby Brothers, Liverpool.
Reports received by W. D. Bentley,
director of extension of A. and M. col-
lege and state agent in charge of ag-
ricultural demonstration work in Ok-
lahoma, indicate that hog cholera is
unusually prevalent throughout Okla-
homa. In nearly every oie of the
forty-five counties organized for the
demonstration work, weekly reports
indicate that cholera is doing great
damage.
Last week elevator men at Black-
well offered $1.21 for wheat of num-
ber two grade. This breaks all rec-
ords for the wheat market in that city
during the twenty-one years it has
been in existence. Very little was
marketed at that price, for the farm-
ers continue to believe there Is a
higher price coming. Between 30 and
40 per cent of the 1914 crop still re-
mains in the farmers' hands.
Changes in the present law con-
cerning the assessing of property for
taxation were considered at a meet-
ing of the state association of county
asesssors held In the Lee-Huck-
ins hotel January 9. Assessors and
ex-assessors of every county the
state form the membership of L^e or-
ganization and will attempt to have
changes made in the law creating
