of li-c prosperity shown by the recent
report cf the postoffice department In
that country is that the postmaster gen-

rate to any point in the I'nited King,

The Doomed Republics.
There is a cold blooded honesty and
sincerity in Great Britain's robber
scheme which is commendable as cim
pared with the hyprocriial excuses
President M .Kinley is giving for the
conquest of the Philippines. The Lon-
don government does uot pretend to say
thst the people of the Dutch republic
and Orange Free State are uot capable
of self-government. The charge is not
mtde that "the flag has been insulted."
but in plain Knglish and in plain Dutch
the people of the two republics are told
that their territory is wanted by Great
Britain and that Great Britain proposes
to take it. There is a quality of manli-
ness, though a brutal manliness, In the
way England is going about the business
that is found wanting in our invasion of
the Philippines. We are there under
false pretense- We say we are going
to give the people home rule, but we re-
fuse to promise anything definitely. But
the specucle of the two "foremost of
the civilized and christanized nations"
woiking in harmony, if not in concert,
to make subjects of millions of human
beings in whose hearts the Almighty has
planted and watered the seeds of person-
al freedom and national independence
. suggests the kind of civilization and
Christianity thst the world needs very
little of. Say as we will. "Anglo-Aineri-
can" means the destruction of personal
liberty and the rule of militarism over
all and the degrading of labor down to
the Hawaiian contract system. It
means the classes are still more highly
favored, and that the masses and the
children and children's children are to be
the hewers of wood and drawers of wat-
er. But the dastardly scheme has not
been consummated yet, nor will it ever
be, if the people of the United States
are true to themselves.—kansas City
