LOS ANGELES (AP) — After
eing chained to a Beirut wall for
..early five years, Church of England
i envoy Terry Waite was given a hero's
; welcome when finally freed last
week.
But according to a BBC documen-
tary airing tonight an PBS’ “Frcnt-
line" (check local listings), Waite
jpnay be a dubious hero. It portrays
♦Waite as a man of Cod duped by
I Oliver North and given, in the months
before his 1987 kidnapping, to delu-
sions of self-important grandeur.
In "The Secret Story of Terry
Waite,” Rand Corp. terrorism advi-
sor Brian Jenkins describes the Angli-
can emissary as a big man (at six feet,
seven inches) with a big ego who
once boasted "I am the archbishop of
Canterbury's Kissinger."
- The 60-minuic documentary sat
unaired for the last three years. The
1 BBC refused to broadcast it until
Waite was released, out of concern
for his safety.
